Every year arrive in this institute

several highly skilled researchers,

either Portuguese or of different

other nationalities. They come to

work with teams of researchers

at the various Research Units of

ISCTE-IUL.

these research units are, along

with the departments and Schools,

the main organizational structures

of the institute. they are centres of

high quality research, mostly with

top FCt ratings.

at this meeting, we intend to welco-

me the newly arrived researchers.

We wish them all a very productive

and pleasant living in iSCte-iuL.

We count on them to strengthen

our research teams and to develop

scientific research with internatio-

nal quality.

We hope they will establish coope-

rative ties with their colleagues at

the research units in which they

are integrated and expect them to

participate in innovative interdisci-

plinary initiatives with colleagues

from these research units.

We also hope that they can enrich

the advanced training of iSCte-

iuL, at the master’s and doctorate

levels, and that they supervise

masters and doctoral theses.

We count on them to carry out

research projects, attract research

funds and produce relevant scienti-

fic publications.

We intend that iSCte-iuL becomes

a university institute with an incre-

asingly higher and internationalized

scientific level, having at its core the

advancement of knowledge and its

application to education, economy

and society.

We are very happy that you join us

in exploring the future.

i was always very interested for psychological issues. that´s the reason why i started my graduation in Psychology. after that, i enrolled in a Masters´s degree on organizational and Social Psychology. i took my internship on a human re-sources department of a consulting organization. it was the time when i became concerned about what happened in our daily life that affected our happiness and performance. this issue is the main problem of my current research. i am rese-arching what daily events mostly happen in our daily life, and what are the main effects of each one in our sense of well being, and in an individual´s engagement and performance at work.

as an organizational psychologist (and a curious for biology and CaS theory), i have always been motivated to understand the self-regulatory dynamics that cause some teams to be more adaptive than others when dealing with change. Most particularly, i have tried to understand how work group coordination pro-cesses and cognitive structures (transactive memory) influence the collective ability to adapt in nonlinear work environments such as it is the case of Police Special Forces, hospital teams and top management teams.

dear researchers,

as director of the Centre for Modern and Contemporary Studies i want to

welcome the new researchers. Foreigners always praised the kindness

of the “lisboetas” and we want to maintain the tradition. our centre was

created in 1975 and had an important role in the methodological renewal

of Portuguese modern and contemporary history. the Center for Modern

and Contemporary history supports research, organizes seminars, sympo-

sia and conferences that promote the historical debate, the update of the

methodological and conceptual research and the progress of comparative

studies. CehC also supports publication of research results and other for-

ms of science diffusion. it contributes to the publication of two Scientific

revues.

among them we must emphasize “Ler história” as a reference in Portu-

guese historical revues panorama. our lines of research include themes of

Social and economic history, urban history, Cultural and Politics history,

history of technology and international relations.

When i started studying history in 2004, i was wondering why it was so difficult and complicated learning more about the evolution of the world from a mili-tary point of view. this question lead me to deepen my interest in the field of history and historiography dedicated to the military aspect. after having had the possibility of staying in Lisbon for one year thanks to the erasmus Program in 2008/2009 and after having finished my Master degree in 2011, i decided to ap-ply for a Phd program in iSCte-iuL, for several, different reasons, firstly because i saw how military history is an important subject in the portuguese academic community and because i knew that the Phd program offered by iSCte-iuL was a good program. thanks to the advices and the collaboration of the Professors of the iSCte-iuL, i planned the work for the thesis, an interesting, innovative plan about the general-Staffs of differents, important european Countries, as germany, united Kingdom, France and Portugal, in order to investigate from a comparative point-of-view the evolution of this capital military institution.

disciplinary basis, we study processes of social and institutional change at

the national and international levels, from a comparative, quantitative and

qualitative perspective. at the same time, we pay special attention to the

ways in which these changes are associated, as causes and effects, with

emanuela is my name and i was born 34 years ago in italy. i started the journey which took me to my current obsession, authoritarianism, by writing my ba dissertation on the codification of the Family Code in algeria. Soon after that, i further deepened my knowledge of gender issues in authoritarian contexts during a two year european union-financed Master programme, during which i lived in tunisia, Morocco and egypt, by writing a Ma dissertation focusing on the codification of the Family Code in Morocco. i continued to build on my experti-se during my Phd at the university of turin, when i examined this same topic enriching my work by making use of the tools of political science and focusing on the concept of civil society. as soon as i could, i moved to Lisbon where i’m a Post-doctoral Fellow at CieS-iuL working on two main areas: political islam and on how the civil society is more and more the sum of narrow interests. Mouraria is the place where i love to live because most of us are immigrants and the light is as rare as beautiful. three times a week i force myself to yoga classes.

My objective now is to make a comparative analysis between the cases of Seville and Lisbon. i try to analyze the role of associations attending to two topics: both the Political oppor-tunity Structure of the host society and the political culture of each immigrant group. Currently, i am trying to master the Portuguese language and to enjoy the beautiful city of Lisbon.

the attention to environmental and sustainability issues was given by my degree in environmental engineering at FCt-unL and my interest in public policies came from the past period as governmental advisor. in between, i tried the consultancy sector, participating in several environmental impact studies like a lot of my colleagues. but was the experience in the public sector, supporting the decision-making process related to public goods, that made me feel real alive and being able of giving a little contribution for the transition process of the current society to a global sustainability. this experience took me to the Phd in Public Policies at iSCte-iuL in 2011 to complement my empirical knowledge with concepts, tools and expertise in order to acquire analytical capacity in the political cycle. now, i am developing my research project focused on environ-mental mainstreaming applied to climate change and its relation with renewable energies policy.

My final dissertation was on Portuguese and brazilian projects using digital technology - and specifically free software tools - for the purpose of political awareness and social transformation. My exposition to open source and free software raised my awareness concerning copyright and intel-lectual property. My name is Maria Clara barata. i’m a researcher and invited Professor at the department of Psychology at iSCte-iuL, where i teach master’s and doctoral courses on research methods and assessment of at-risk children. My current research focuses on the effects of maltreatment and neglect, and the media-tional role of executive functions, on the pre-academic skills of at-risk prescho-olers. in this project i also examine the moderating role of preschool classroom quality in the relationship between these risk factors and pre-academic skills. the project is funded by an iiF Marie Curie grant from the european Commission. before this project, i designed and implemented a large-scale evaluation of a national policy for the Portuguese Ministry of education and Science (barata, Calheiros, Patrício, graça, & Lima, 2012, http://www.gepe.min-edu.pt/np4/670.html). Prior to working in Portugal, i was the research project coordinator for un buen Comienzo, a large randomized trial evaluation of a preschool professional development program in Santiago, Chile. i hold a master’s and doctoral degree in education from the harvard graduate School of education, and a licenciatura in Clinical Child Psychology from the university of Lisbon.

From 2010 to present, i have been working with children and adolescents that, due to the abuse and/or neglect suffered, are living in residential care facilities. this year, i finally decided for the Phd. it has been a great challenge since i have a full time job and am a mother of a 1 year-old girl. My current research involves trying to explain the variables in the construction of self-appraisals in adolescents living in residential care, namely, the role of the relationship quality (with the staff and other institutionalized peers) and of the organizational climate in this process. i intend my Phd rese-arch to bring new knowledge and contributions to the residential care services, policies and practices, making the difference in the lives of these children and adolescents that suffered abuse and neglect.

i graduated from the Faculty of Psychology and educational Sciences, at Coimbra’s university in Psychology (2005) and completed an integrated Master degree in Social Psychology (2007) with a research conducted under the theme of Social representations of domestic Violence in Prison Context. Later on, i enrolled in a post-degree in Community Psychology and Child Protection, which enriched my knowledge in Community Psychology, Social interventions Progra-ms, assessment and intervention with children and family at risk and community intervention with stigmatized minorities. My current research, by integrating individual, contextual and societal dimension in its analysis, aims to contribute to the comprehension of the participation processes that facilitate psychologi-cal empowerment in youth from ethnic minorities. it intends to particularly a) understand the role of contextual and institutional factors that favor or inhibit political and civic participation of these young people; b) explore the political participation processes that facilitate psychological empowerment and, finally, c) integrate the results in order to provide significant implications to the design, implementation and evaluation of both policies and intervention projects that aims to promote not only civic and political participation of these young people but also their social inclusion.

i was born in romania and in 2002 i moved to Portugal. this migratory experien-ce along with the multicultural environment present at the american interna-tional School where i studied for five years, encouraged me to learn more about international pathways. during the second year of my bachelor’s degree in Psychology, i started working as a research assistant in a project about multicul-turalism and mental health. Quickly, my career as a research assistant evolved due to the constant interest of expanding my knowledge in this area. When i had to choose the theme for the Master’s thesis in Social and organizational Psychology, it was quite easy to decide, because i knew i wanted something related to international pathways. Specifically, i decided to focus on expatriation, family and cross-cultural adjustment. after completing my thesis, i accepted the challenge of working as a research intern at the Center for Multicultural Mental health research-harvard Medical School. this experience nourished my interest about research related to expatriation.

My interest in research began in 2003 whilst studying Psychology at the Faculty of Psychology, university of Lisbon. after completing a clinical internship in a Centre for addiction treatment, i travelled abroad to the institute of Psychia-try, King’s College London (university of London), where i enrolled in an MSc in Clinical and Public health aspects of addiction. as an MSc student, i had to opportunity to explore patient-related variables which might affect the outco-mes of treatment, such as the level of information and knowledge that patients about their own treatment. on my return to Lisbon, in 2010, i started to work at Cis-iuL as a research assistant in a projected funded by FCt that aimed to develop a personalised system to evaluate and monitor the progress of patients in psychological treatment. My current research interests include the personali-sation of psychological treatment for addiction, based on measures whose items are generated by patients themselves. this is the topic i am exploring in my Phd project (SFrh/bd/87308/2012), also at Cis-iuL, in collaboration with King’s College London.

during my graduation, i’ve always been interested in the social determinants of health and in inequalities to access the health services. afterwards, i realized the real importance of these themes during my work, as a nurse, in the Prima-ry health Care Services. So, when i started my Master degree in Community Psychology and Child Protection, at iSCte-iuL, i decided to explore the experien-ce from immigrant people in Portugal in the surveillance´s child health services. it was developed an exploratory study about this topic, with Cape-Verdean and brazilian immigrant mothers, in Lisbon. We identified some beliefs, attitudes and practices, from the studied populations, which influence the child´s health surveillance. We identified, also, their perceptions about barriers and facilitators to access and use the surveillance´s child health services. the analyzed data su-ggests a relationship between some concepts, but the content analyze realized not allow us to prove it. thus, in my current research we pretend to revise the limitations from the previous study and developing a grounded theory about compliance predictors in the Surveillance´s Child health Services, referred to Cape-Verdean and brazilian immigrants in Portugal. this theory could, also, constitute the needs assessment from an intervention program in this area, which we pretend to implement and evaluate.

Since then i elaborated my post-doc research project concerning the help-seeking behaviour of bulgarian minority resident in algarve. My research interests focus on the construction of practice by individuals and by the groups. on this construction, i pay special attention to the role of representations and how they are elaborated and manipulated within the power relations in order to serve the imposition of the elite’s interests over populations and how these populations resist to this imposition and design their own ways to cope with the several problems they face (e.g., illness). Currently, i am discovering the several benefits that this perspective can bring into the world of business in the context of the internationalization of enterprises.

Parallel to my practice collaborating in urban and public building projects, i’ve organized and produced several cultural events, i’m editor and writer of an independent publication and i enjoy a large interest in cinema and audiovisual production. in my current research i study the way archi-tects have been using film and moving image devices to construct architectonic discourses. by analyzing television programs, documentaries and other filmic formats about architecture or made by architects, i attempt to understand the impact of media in architectonic production and it’s relation with the evolution of communication technology.

the theme of my Phd research is a consequence of my professional career. i have been an architectural designer since 1986, and a college educator since 1991. as a researcher, i have always tried to stretch my own perspectives about architecture. Following a Master’s degree course that started in 1994, i wrote a dissertation that arose from the realization that architecture often finds itself in a battlefield of paradoxes, as if its main task should be to conciliate concepts often considered incompatible, e.g. form x matter, essence x appearance. i intended to demonstrate that this situation, far from being a sign of irrelevance in a technological world, is what gives architecture its disciplinary core. it allows architecture to take a place in the topology of contemporary knowledge; while at the same time overcoming today’s cultural logic, based in fictional or artificial polarities. For my Phd thesis i am attempting to widen the current view of early modern architecture from Portugal, and of how it dealt with its structural and technological aspects. i would like to demonstrate that for some Portuguese architects, modern architecture was more than a decorative style, embodying a paradigm shift dictated by the use of reinforced concrete.

UniverSity reSidence

3.2

The ISCTE-IUL University Residence meets the accommodation needs of

some of its visiting students and professors who have so far only been

served by the private accommodation market all over Lisbon. Located

in the 17th-century Santos-o-Novo Monastery, which is classified as a

National Monument, on a small hill by the river Tagus in Lisbon’s east end,

the residence has a splendid view and is a short distance from the central

railway station of Santa apolónia, the traditional neighbourhood of alfa-

ma, downtown Lisbon, Terreiro do Paço, and the new residential, retail

and service area of Parque das Nações.

Since there are more applicants than vacancies, it will not be possible to

provide accommodation at the hall residence for all exchange students.

the criterion used is the date of arrival of the application form.
