• Fixed amount of Processing Power and Cache
• Fixed amount of front side bandwidth for host connectivity and back side bandwidth for disk connectivity
• Maximum number of spindles each model of array supports
• Processing Power and Cache (IOPS) scale
• Bandwidth for host connectivity scale
• Grows to 16 arrays per peer storage group (up to 160 Gb/s and 64 GB Flash Memory)
• Virtualized storage takes advantage of all spindles (Native IO) in the group eliminating islands of IO
• Peer storage architecture load balances connections across all arrays in the group

Business applications are typically small block / high IO. Average hosts require less than 10 MB/sec throughput with some higher end hosts potentially pushing 100 – 150 MB/sec. Additional GigE NICs or iSCSI HBA’s can be added if needed.
2 x GigE NICs 200 MB/sec
4 Gbps dual arbitrated loop with redundant controllers provides a maximum bandwidth ~800 MB/sec. Controller failure cuts cache and bandwidth in half.
EqualLogic’s linear scaling iSCSI design adds 4GB Cache and ~400 MB/sec per array in the Peer Storage Group. Active / Active Standby architecture ensures that arrays operate at full performance capabilities even if a controller fails.

The Dell EqualLogic Advantages
15
• Easy to expand storage capacity (non-disruptive)
• Automatic balances resources
• Auto-tiering of HOT/COLD sub-volume memory pages
• Many choices for RAID types
• Mix and match array performance; NL-SAS, 10K SAS, 15K SAS or SSD
• Host is transparent to all PS Series auto-balancing functions

Add capacity at the same time you add network I/O, cache memory, storage processors, & redundancy
The NLB (Network Load Balancer) manages the assignment of individual iSCSI connections to Ethernet ports on the group members
EqualLogic MPIO extends network load balancing end to end host <-> array port
The CLB (Capacity Load Balancer) manages the utilization of the disk capacity in the pool
Free Space balancing manages dynamic space usage between arrays
The APLB (Automatic Performance Load Balancer) manages the distribution of high I/O data within the pool.
The Hybrid Array Load Balancer manages the distribution of high I/O data within a hybrid array.
EqualLogic Load Balancers

• Data Movement Automation is based on the POOL…not the Group
• Page data are moved through SAN infrastructure
• Volumes reside on one or more arrays based on:
– Volume’s RAID Policy preference
– RAID Policy (parity vs. non-parity)
• Page data resides on arrays based on:
– Capacity balancing
– Access frequency vs. Array latency

• SAN Assist – SAN HQ has always supported monitoring, analyzing and managing multiple
groups. SANHQ 2.5 enhances the customer support experience by now transmitting a subset of this information back to Dell. Dell will use this information to proactively monitor customer’s systems and provide a higher level of support
• Cross-group performance report
– This report shows an analysis of the performance characteristics for each group in a single screen, enabling a single view comparison for your entire environment
• Mismatched drive detection
– Helps identify and alert an administrator when an EQL array has mismatched drives, by type / RPM / Capacity / Spares / and SED’s.
• Support for M4110 and 65x0ES
– Introduces support for new EQL hardware platforms.
• User control Enhancements – Provides for the ability to choose how often SAN HQ now polls the group, sends
out e-mails, notifications, and so on.
• Support for v6.0 features including Sync Rep & snapshot space borrowing
