Installing and configuring Microsoft iSCSI Initiator 2.08, NetApp DSM MPIO 4,

NetApp SnapDrive for Windows 6.4.2 and creating an ISCSI lun on the NetApp

controller.

1) Install the iSCSi initiator. Download it from here.

a. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=18986

b. Double-click the Initiator-2.08-build3825-x86fre.exe file > Next > select all options and click Next > I

agree with the license and click Next > Finish > the server will automatically reboot.

2) Install Microsoft KB patches: KB919117, KB945119, KB982109, KB931300 and KB937382.

a. Note that in the next step to install the DSM MPIO, if any patches are missing it will tell what patches it

needs.

3) Install NetApp DSM MPIO. Double-click ntap_win_mpio_4.0_setup_x86.msi > Next > click OK on the ALUA

message > accept the license and click Next > enter the license and click Next (check the NetApp support site for

your licenses) > use the default system account and click Next > do not install HyperV utilities and click Next >

Next > Next > Next > Install > ignore the no FC adapter message, click OK (you aren’t using fiber channel) > Finish

> Yes to reboot.

4) Launch and configure the Microsoft iSCSI Initiator. Double-click the Microsoft iSCSI Initiator icon on the desktop.

a. On the Discovery tab, under Target

portals click Add. Enter the IP address

of the NetApp controller NIC that will

receive the storage traffic. Click

Advanced.

Page 2: iSCSI on Windows with NetApp - · PDF fileInstalling and configuring Microsoft iSCSI Initiator 2.08, NetApp DSM MPIO 4, NetApp SnapDrive for Windows 6.4.2 and creating an ISCSI lun

b. On the General tab, under Connect by

using, select Microsoft iSCSI Initiator

as the local adapter and the source IP

(this should be the NIC that carries the

storage traffic on the server. If you

only have one NIC you will only have

one IP). Click OK when done, and then

click OK > OK.

c. You should now have a target portal

defined. Click OK to close the initiator.

Page 3: iSCSI on Windows with NetApp - · PDF fileInstalling and configuring Microsoft iSCSI Initiator 2.08, NetApp DSM MPIO 4, NetApp SnapDrive for Windows 6.4.2 and creating an ISCSI lun

5) Install NetApp SnapDrive. Create a service account in Active Directory called snapdriveadmin or something

similar. Now, add the snapdriveadmin account to the local administrators group on the Windows 2003 server.

a. Double-click SnapDrive6.4.2_x86.exe > Next > accept the license and click Next > enter the license

(check the NetApp support site for your license) and click Next > enter customer info and click Next >

Next > Next > Next.

b. Enter the service

account you

created above

and click Next.

c. Click OK on the Account has been given Log on As a Service right pop-up window. Note that you may

have to define this in Group Policy. Let me know if the service doesn’t start on reboot and I’ll write a

GPO HOWTO if you don’t know how to do it.

d. Accept the

default ports and

click Next.

e. Click Next > Next > Install > Finish. Manually reboot the server.

f. After the server reboots, login and verify that the NetApp services are running in Windows Services.

6) Create a lun with SnapDrive. Note that it is assumed you have already created a volume on the NetApp

controller where the lun (or luns) will live. You can place multiple luns in a volume.

a. Add the snapdriveadmin account to the

NetApp controller CIFS admin group. On

the Windows 2003 server, Click Start,

right-click My Computer and select

manage.

b. Right-click Computer Management

(Local) and select Connect to another

computer.

c. Enter the IP or

hostname of your

NetApp controller

and click OK.

d. Expand System Tools > expand Local users and

Groups. Double-click the Administrators group.

e. On the General tab

click Add. Enter the

snapdriveadmin

account and click OK >

OK. Back in the

Computer

Management window,

click File > Exit.

f. Click Start > All Programs > NetApp > SnapDrive.

g. In the SnapDrive console, expand your hostname,

right-click your hostname and select Transport

Protocol Settings.

h. Click Add on Storage Systems tab. On the Add Storage System window, enter the hostname or IP of your

NetApp Controller, change connection type to RPC and click OK > OK.

i. In the SnapDrive console, expand your hostname,

right-click Disks and select Create Disk.

j. Click Next on the Welcome screen. On the first Create Disk Wizard screen, enter the IP address or

hostname of the NetApp storage controller and click Add. The volumes will then appear in the center

window. Select the sharepoint volume (or whatever you called your volume). Lun Path= /vol/sharepoint,

LUN name= (you enter a short lun name), LUN Description= (enter a description). Click Next when done.

k. Since this is not a MSCS or Failover cluster, select Dedicated and click Next.

l. Select a drive letter and define the disk size. Note that for this HOWTO, this is a small lun and volume. To

make room on this 20 Gig volume for more luns, change the lun size to 10 GB and click Next. Always

make room for more luns.

n. On the Select Initiator screen, under Initiator List, select the iqn listed. On the iSCSI pop-up window click

Yes and the Session Wizard will appear.

w. Check Disk Manager and there it is as the E:\ drive. Perfectly aligned, mounted and formatted.

x. You can now manage the lun/disk from inside Windows. To create another lun (disk), simply right-click

Disks and run the wizard. You are ready to install apps now. The next section is for reference. Please

read it.

7) If you need to resize the disk, it’s easy to do and can be done with everything up and running.

a. Go to Start > All Programs > NetApp > SnapDrive. On the upper left, expand Disks and select the disk you

need to resize. On the far right in the Actions panel, click Expand Disk.

b. You can either grab the slider in the graphic, click up/down next to the number in the New Size field to

increment the size or type the number. Enter 11 GB, click OK and the disk will be increased to 11 GB.

c. To take a Snapshot of the lun, right-click the disk and select Create Snapshot.

d. Enter a name for the snapshot and

click OK. You type whatever you

want here.

e. The snaphots are now listed under the disk.

8) View the lun from the NetApp controller. Open a ssh/putty session to the controller and run the following

commands (in bold text) to inspect the lun.

controller> lun show -v /vol/sharepoint/spsdb01 11.0g (11811502080) (r/w, online, mapped) Comment: "Sharepoint Database lun o1" Serial#: hoagPJrMACBL Share: none Space Reservation: enabled (not honored by containing Aggregate) Multiprotocol Type: windows_gpt Maps: viaRPC.iqn.1991-05.com.microsoft:2003test1.lab.slice2.com=0

9) You can also view the luns from OnCommand System Manager. You should be running version 2.1 or later. If

not, you MUST upgrade System Manager because there are serious bugs in older versions that can kill your

network configuration.

10) That’s it. Hope this helps.
