ISA ESSAY COMPETITIONS 2018 The ISA Essay Competition is the annual opportunity for pupils at ISA Members’ schools to allow their writing skills to shine. Wordsmiths are invited to submit entries for a range of competition prizes aimed at age groups from Year 5 through to sixth form. For the sixth form competition students can choose to write about any topic or genre. For the other three age groups there are a range of titles to choose from. Please note: This competition is only open to pupils at school whose Head Teacher is a full Member of ISA. Schools may submit a maximum of one female entry and one male entry for each of the three competition levels (Junior, Intermediate and Senior). Sixth Forms may enter six essays in total. Horsey (Junior: yrs 5 & 6) Max Gate (Intermediate: yrs 7 & 8) Favonius (Senior: yrs 9-11) Sixth Form (yrs 12-13) Except for Sixth Form, submissions must be written in the candidate’s own handwriting, unless there are special medical or other circumstances (about which brief details must be given on the entry form). ISA ESSAY COMPETITIONS 2018

The ISA Essay Competition is the annual opportunity for pupils at ISA Members’ schools to

allow their writing skills to shine. Wordsmiths are invited to submit entries for a range of

competition prizes aimed at age groups from Year 5 through to sixth form. For the sixth

form competition students can choose to write about any topic or genre. For the other

three age groups there are a range of titles to choose from.

Please note:

This competition is only open to pupils at school whose Head Teacher is a full Member of ISA.

Schools may submit a maximum of one female entry and one male entry for each of the three

competition levels (Junior, Intermediate and Senior). Sixth Forms may enter six essays in total.

ENTRY FORM Entries are now open for the 2018 ISA Favonius Senior Essay Prize. An original piece of writing (500–800 words, prose, poetry or drama) is required and candidates may use the first or third person, past or present tense. Candidates must choose one of the following titles: 1 Cold 2 The Hero’s Story 3 The Other Side 4 The Man with No Face

5 The Strange Case of John Doe 6 Who am I? 7 The Knock at the Door 8 The Gatekeeper

Schools may submit a maximum of one female entry and one male entry for each of the four competition levels (Junior, Intermediate, Senior and Sixth Form). For the Favonius Senior Essay Prize, candidates will turn/have turned 14, 15 or 16 years old in the 2018–19 academic year (equivalent to Years 9–11). Please attach to the front of each essay this completed A4 entry form, which includes the declaration of original work signed by the relevant teacher. ENTRY FORM Entries are now open for the 2018 Max Gate Intermediate Essay Prize. Candidates should submit an original piece of writing in response to one of the following titles: 1 A World Without Colour 2 My Favourite Work of Art 3 'Mighty oaks from little acorns grow.' 4 The Day the Internet Shut Down 5 'They've landed!'

HORSEY JUNIOR ESSAY PRIZE 2018

ENTRY FORM Entries are now open for the 2018 ISA Horsey Junior Essay Prize. Candidates should submit an original piece of writing in response to one of the following titles: 1 Imaginative

Kitty’s ghost can still be seen walking the derelict Old Mill. She was mysteriously killed… Write a story describing Kitty’s life and the events that resulted in her death.

2 Fantasy My childhood toy box was buried under rubbish in the garage. But one day I discovered an old favourite toy mysteriously peering at me through the window! Continue the tale aimed at year 6 readers.

3 Science fiction “Beam me up Scottie” Captain Kirk screamed…and was never heard again! Write a story ending with this dramatic last line.

4 Letter You would like to organise a charity event in the summer term in school time for all year 9 students.

The aim is to raise money for a local children’s hospice. Write a letter to your Chair of Governors asking for support.

5 Persuasion “It is only reasonable that sixteen-year-olds should be allowed to vote in a general election” Write a speech either in support or against this view.

6 Autobiography Describe an event that has changed your whole life in an important way.

ISA SIXTH FORM ESSAY PRIZE 2018

ENTRY FORM Entries are now open for the 2018 ISA Sixth Form Essay Prize. An original piece of writing (1,000 words strict maximum limit) is required on any topic and in any genre. Submissions will be judged in the following categories: 1 English and Linguistics 2 Science, IT and Technology

3 Arts and Humanities subjects, including Languages (Please note essays must be in English).

Schools may submit a maximum of six entries for this competition. For the Sixth Form Essay Prize candidates will turn/have turned 17, 18 or 19 years old in the 2018-19 academic year (being in sixth form) and must be still in full-time education at an ISA Member’s School at the time of entering. Submissions can be pieces of work that have already been completed in the course of sixth form studies, However, they must be within the 1,000 word strict limit. They should be completed under supervision at school. They should not have been heavily edited/re-drafted following teacher comments or feedback. Please attach to the front of each submission this completed A4 entry form, which includes the declaration of original work signed by the relevant teacher.
