Is your Oracle Version Still Supported and Does It Matter?
Whilst organisations like Xynomix can offer full third party support across the
entire database portfolio from Oracle versions 6 upwards, many organisations
appreciate the security of Oracle vendor-maintenance for more recent database
versions in addition to external support.
This ‘Lifetime Support’ offering from Oracle can cover a number of scenarios
when used in conjunction with a more comprehensive third party support
contract such as those offered by companies like Xynomix. The offering is
made up of three support stages; Premier Support, Extended Support and
Sustaining Support.
The table below shows the various lifetime support expiry dates for various
Oracle database releases:

Premier Support lasts for five years from the general availability date,
crucially providing updates, fixes, security alerts, data fixes, and critical patch
updates as part of a product specific technical support package.
For an additional fee, an additional three years of support is available under
the label of Extended Support. This, as the name would suggest, extends the
level of service you would receive under premier support for the agreed time
period, allowing you more time to plan your upgrade strategy. It should be
taken into account that at this stage fixes, patches and compatibility upgrades
are only likely to be forthcoming if specifically requested by an extended
support customer and even then are not guaranteed if the requested feature or
compatibility already exists in a later version.
On the expiry of extended support, or premier support if this option is not
taken out, Sustaining Support will automatically commence for as long as the
Oracle product is licenced. At this point no further patches or upgrades will be
made for the version, although previously released fixes will continue to be
made available.
If you think that the time might have come for your organisation to upgrade to a
more recent release of Oracle, then Xynomix can help make the entire process
as seamless as possible. From planning, to licencing, to installation,
implementation and optimisation – our expert team of DBA’s have got it
covered…
