… the challenge of global aging transcends its impact g g g gon government budgets. It promises to restructure the economy, reshape the family, redefine politics and even rearrange the geopolitical order of the next even rearrange the geopolitical order of the next century. Unlike many predictions about the future, global aging is no mere hypothesis. Its approximate g g g yp pptiming and magnitude are already locked in. It is a revolution sure to happen ‐ and when it has run its

By 2030, nearly half of all adults in developed countries and perhaps two‐thirds of all voters will be at or beyond today's retirement age. Indeed, the power of the elderly is already on the risethe elderly is already on the rise.

Why is that significant? Why is that significant?

Ever since Thucydides, historians have observed that the rise and fall of civilizations is closely linked to demographic trends. Throughout history, contracting populations have given way militarily  economically populations have given way militarily, economically and culturally to expanding ones. While today's older developed countries are not predestined to pass their p p pleadership to younger developing countries, they cannot ignore the geopolitical implications of di i  f tilit   d   t ddiverging fertility and age trends.

Can Easter Island be seen as a microcosm of our planet d ? today?

Should we regard its shocking collapse as a cautionary tale of the utmost gravity? g yIn the world at large, we are deforesting our land, overfishing our oceans, causing the extinction of large numbers of species. We are watching our topsoil disappear numbers of species. We are watching our topsoil disappear by the millions of tons each year. We are starting to fight over ever‐scarcer freshwater. We are overconsuming our resources as if there were no tomorrow  or future resources as if there were no tomorrow, or future generations. One would have to be in denial not to see those "chillingly obvious" parallels to Easter Island.
