0 . F O R E W O R D
0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian StandardsInstitution on 20 October 1975, after the draft finalized by the DentalEquipment Sectional Committee had been approved by the ConsumerProducts and Medical Instruments Division Council.
0.2 This standard is one of the series of Indian Standards on dentalequipment and instruments and has been formulated at the instance ofthe Advisory Committee for Development of Surgical Instruments,Equipment and Appliances, Government of India.
0.3 Surveyor, cast, dental, is used extensively by the dental profession. This standard covers functional requirements and is expected to help inproviding equipment of uniform quality consistent with ease of operation.
0.4 In the preparation of this standard, assistance has been derived fromGG-S-00805 a( DSA-DM ) ‘ Interim Federal Specification: Surveyordental clasp’, issued by Defence Personnel Support Centre, USA.
0.5 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement ofthis standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance withIS : 2-1960*. The number of significant places retained in the roundedoff value should be the same as that of the specified value in thisstandard.
1. SCOPE
1.1 This standard covers the dimensional and other requirements forcast surveyor for use in designing dental prosthesis.
*Ruler for rounding off numerical values ( noised ).

3. SHAPE AND DIMENSIONS
3.1 The essential dimensions of cast surveyoi shall conform to Fii. 1 to 3.
4. CONsTRUCTI0.N
4.1 The surveying spindle shall be machined and centreless ground toproduce a straight, concentric rod. The surveying spindle shall bemounted in selEaligning ball bearing bushings which shall be factorycentred in the cylindrical housing of the surveying arm. The lowerend ofthe spindle shall be drilled internally and threaded externally to receivethe threaded collet. The collet shall activate the three-jawed chuckused to hold the various interchangeable working tools. The upper endof the upright column and the lower end of the cylinder housing of thesurveying arm shall be machined to matching taper bearing surfaces.
4.2 The surveying spindle shall be perpendicular to the top surface ofthe surveyor base and shall have a runout not exceeding O-1270 mmwhen tested as specified in 6.
5. WORKMANSHIP AND FINISH
5.1 The cast surveyor shall be free from imperfictions which affect itsappearance or which may impair its serviceability. All surfaces, except forplated hardware components and those listed in 2, shall have ablack wrinkle, baked enamel finish. The top surface of the surveyorbase shall be machined, ground, lapped and sand-blasted. The bottomand outer rim surface of the tilt-top table mount shall be machined andpolished to provide easy movement over the top surface of the surveyorbase. The top surface of the tilt-top table shall be slightly roughenedand shall be scribed with a series of circles of uniformly increasing dia-meters. The matching taper, bearing surfaces of the surveying arm andupright column shall have a machined finish.
6. TESTS
6.1 Runout Test -The total indicated runout of the surveying spindleshall be measured to the nearest O-0254 mm. The spindle shall be heidin its housing and rotated slowly. A dial indicator sensitive to ~012 7 mm,equipped with a knife-edge foot or other suitable equipment of equalaccuracy shall be employed. If a dial indicator is used, it shall bemounted with a shaft perpendicular to the axis of the spindle and shall besopositioned that the foot contacts the spindle surface. The differencebetween the maximum and minimum readings for one full rotation ofthe spindle shall be taken as the total indicated runout.
7. MARKING7.1 Each-cast surveyor shall de permanently and legibly marked with the Imanufacturer’s name, initials or registered trade-mark.
