    Y. SCOPE1.1 This standard lays dow n the general d efinitions applicable to hyd rauliccements, as well as the particular dd initions and the den ominations wh ichpertain to each type of cemen t.2. GENERAL DEFINITIONS2,l Hydraulic cement - Finely groun d material wh ich on addition ofrequisite qu antity of water is capable of hardenin g both un der w ater and intir by the chem ical interaction of its constituen ts with w ater, and is alsocapab le of ben din g together app ropriate materials.2.2 C o m p o n e n t Materials

2.2.1 Principal Com@nent Materials - The principal materials used in theman ufacture of hyd raulic cement shou ld have either hyd raulic or pozzolanicproperties.2.2.1.1 Hydraulic jwo~erties - Hyd raulic prop erties are the ability of amaterial to set and hard en in the presence of water, with formation of stablewmpounds.2.2.1.2 Pozzolanic @ropertiGs The ability of a material to comb inechem ically with calcium hyd roxide in the presence of water u nd er ambien ttemperature forming compou nd s h aving cementitious properties.

2.2.2 Portland Clinker - Clinker, consistin g mostly of calcium silicates, obtained by heating to incipient fu sion a predetermmed and homogeneousmixture of materials prin cipally containin g lime ( CaO ) and silica ( SiO, )with a smaller p roportion of alum ina ( Also, ) and iron oxide ( FesO, ).2.2.3 Granulated Blartjhace Slag - Blastfurnace slag in granu lated form isused for the man ufacture. of hyd raulic cemen t. Blastfurnace slag is non -metallic prod uct consisting essentially of glass contain ing silicates and alum inosilicates of lime and other bases, wh ich is developed simu ltaneously with ironin blastfurnace or electric pig iron furn ace. Granu lated slag is obtained by

furth er processing the molten slag by rapid ly chilling or qu enching it withwater or steam and air.2.2.4 High Alumina Clinker - Clink er consisting m ainly of mon o calciumaluminates and obtained by complete or partial fusion of a predeterminedmixture of materials main ly containin g alum ina ( Also, ) and lime ( CaO )with smaller prop ortions of iron oxides, silica (.SiOs ) and other oxides.2.2.5 PozzoCana -An essentially silicious material wh ich wh ile in itselfpossessing little or no cemen titious prop erties will, in finely divid ed formand in the presence of water, react with calcium hvd roxide at amb ient tern--pcrature to form comp oun ds possessing cementitious prop erties. PORTLAND CJMENT3.1 P o r t l a n d C e m e n t - Portland cement is the cement obtained by grind -ing Portland clinker with the possible addition of a small qu antity of gypsum, water or both , and not more than one percent of air entrainin g agents orother agents wh ich have proved not to be harmfu l ( see IS : 269-i967* ).3.2 Addi t ives - In the man ufacture of Portland cemen t, an y material, other than w ater or gypsum , or both , wh ich is interground with the clinker,in an amou nt not to exceed one percent. The followin g two types of add i-tives are recognized:a) Processing add itives designed prim arily to aid the cemen t m anu -facturer in grind ing or otherwise processing or han dling his cemen t,an d

    b) Fun ctional add itives add ed p rimarily to mod ify the end prop ertiesof cement.3.2.1 The add itives sh ould be covered by a statement of their naturecompleting the stand ard denom ination of the cement.

    3.3 Standard D e n o m i n a t i o n P o r t la n d C e m e n t s - Ordinary Portlandcemen t, rapid harden ing Portland cemen t and low-heat Portland cemen t.4. CEMJ J NT CONTAINING BLASTF URNACE SLAG4 .1 P o r t lan d B las t fu r n ace S lag Cem en t - An intimately intergroundmixture of Portland clinker and granu lated blastfurn ace slag with add itionof gypsum and perm itted add itives ( see 3.2 ) or an intimate and un iformblend of Portland cement and finely groun d granu lated blastfurnace slag(see IS : 455-1967t ).4.1.1 Standard Denomination Portland blastfurn ace slag cemen t.
