Indian StantihdSPECIFICATION FOR
UMBRELLA TUBES, STICKS AND
(First Revision)O. FOREWORD
IS :2918-1979
HANDLES
0.1 This Indian Standard ( First Revision ) was adopted by the IndianStandards Institution on 31 August 1979, after the draft finalized by theUmbrellas Sectional Committee had been approved by the ConsumerProducts and Medical Instruments Devision Council.
0.2 This standard was first pubjished in 1964. Since then many sugges-tions were received for its improvement. This standard is being revisedto take care of the suggestions received from time to time.
0.3 Umbrellas are being manufactured in the country in large quantityboth for domestic consumption and export. By ‘and large, the manufac-turers of umbrellas procure the various parts from different componentmanufacturers. It is, therefore, necessary that Indian Standards shouldbe made available for the complete umbrella as well as for thecomponents.
0.4 Umbrellas are assemble.d with either steel tubes fitted with handles orcane or bamboo sticks suitably bent at one end into a handle. Whileumbrellas with tubes allow interchangeability of components, the caneand bamboo sticks, which vary in diameters from piece to piece, do notallow any interchangeability. The fittings, therefore, will have to bemanufactured in many sizes.
0.5 Tubes are usually fitted with two stoppers for the two positions of therunner in the assembled umbrellas. In the case of flexus ribs, however, the stopper at the handle end is not required. When ordering tubesalone, this point may be borne in mind by the purchasers.
0.6 The shapes of the handles have not been specified as these are usuallyaccording to the dictates of fashion.
0.7 This standard contains clauses which call for agreement between thepurchaser and the supplier and which permit the purchaser to use hisoption for selection to suit his requirements. The relevant clauses are2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8.
