FOREWORD

This Indian Standard ( Fourth Revision) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after thedraft finalized by Lead, Zinc, Cadmium, Tin, Antimony and their Alloys Sectional Committee hadbeen approved by the Metallurgical Engineering Division Council.

This standard was first published in 1950 and was subsequently revised in 1956, 1966 and 1979. Inthis revision the requirements if chemical analysis and marking have been modified and a new clauseon inspection has been added.

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirments of this standard is complied with, thefinal value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off inaccordance with IS 2 : 1960 'Rules for rounding otT numerical values ( revised )9. The number ofsignificant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value inthis standard.

1 SCOPE

1.1 This standard covers the requirements forvirgin zinc in the form of ingot.

1.2 It does not cover the requirements ofsecondary zinc and zinc for galvanizing which arecovered in IS 4699 : 1984 •Refined secondary zinc(first rellision)· and IS 13229: 1991 'Zinc forgalvanising' respectively.

3 GRADES

This standard covers two lI"adea of zinc namelyZn 99.99 and Zn 99.95.

.. SVPrLY or MATEIUAL

4.1 General requirements relating to tbe supplyof zinc shall conform to IS 1387 : 1967.

4.2 Zinc sball be supplied in the form of ingot. However if required by the purchaser. it may alsobe suppliod in the form of slab, tile or plate.

5 MANUfACTURE

The virgin zinc shall be produced from the ore.

6 CHEMICAL COMPOSmON

6.1 The zinc sball conform to the chemicalcomposition u specified in Table I.

1 In the case of .,.de Zn 99'99 the impurity levelsshould be kept to the minimum to avoid intercrystalline corrosion particularly lead. cadmium.copper, indium and thallium.

1 Copper content shall Dot exceed 0'001 percent for theabove pacles when used for dry battery canl.

3 Other impurities do not preclude the possiblepresence or other unnamed elements, However.analysis shall reaularly be made only for the impuritieslisted in the table. The major element shall bedetermined by difl'erenc:e between the sum of totalelements analysed and 100 percent. By aareementbetween manufacturer and the purcbaser, analysis maybe required and limits established for elements notspecified.

the ingots shall be selected from each consignmentrepresenting one grade of metal produced underuniform conditions of manufacture and offeredfor inspection at one time.

9.2 The method of preparing samples for chemicalanalysis and spectrographic analysis from Ingotsselected under 9.1 shall be in accordance withIS: J817: 1961 and IS 8816: 1978 respectively.

If the sample prepared UDder 9.2 fails to meet therequirements specified under 6.1. two more testsshall be conducted OD the same sample in order toconfirm tbat the analysis has 6een done properly. If both the test results satisfy the relevantrequirements. the lot shall be accepted. Shouldeither of the retest sample fail, the lot representatedshall be deemed as Dot complying with thisstandard.

11 INSPECI10N

11.1 All Inspection and testing of zinc covered inthis standard shall be carried out by themanufacturer unless otherwise agreed to betweenthe manufacturer and the purchaser. The iDSpectioDrequirements shall be stated in the enquiry andorder.

11.2 The purchaser shall notify the supplier whileplacing the order if it is his intention to inspectthe material at the supplier's end. The suppliershall offer the purchaser all the necessary facilitiesfor testing of the material in accordance with thisstandard, For this purpose the purchaser or hisrepresentative may, by prior arrangement, attendto inspect the material, to select and identify thetest samples for testing and to witness the testbeing made.
