FOREWORD

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by the Automotive Body and Chassis Sectional Committee had been approved by the Transport Engineering Division Council.

This Indian Standard is based on Safety Standard ( SS 4 ) ‘Wheel nuts, wheel discs and hub caps“ issued by Automotive Research Association of India ( ARAI ), Pune.

-The Committee Composition responsible for the preparation of this standard is given in Annex A.

In reporting the results of a test or analysis made in accordance with this standard, if the final value, observed or calculated, is to be rounded off, it shall be done in accordance with IS 2 : 196@ ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised )‘.

AUTOMOTIVEVEHICLES-WHEELFASTENERS ANDHUBCAPS-GENERAL

REQUIREMENTS 1 SCOPE

1.1 This standard specifies the general require- ments for fasteners and hub caps used in cars, light and heavy passenger and commercial vehicles.

1.2 This standard precludes the use of such wheel fasteners and hub caps that constitute a hazard to pedestrians, cyclists and other road users.

2 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

2.1 Wheel Fasteners

Wheel fasteners shall be made of any suitable material such that when the nut is fully tightened and loosened on the threaded stud with a maximum torque value 30 percent in

excess of the manufacturers’ recommendations, for 20 times, shall not show any sign of crack, fracture or breakage.

2.2 Hub Caps

2.2.1 Hub caps shall be free from any manufacturing defects such as sharp edges, cracks, etc.

2.2.2 Hub cap, where provided, shall fit securely on the wheel hubs, so as not to get detached during motion of the vehicle.

2.2.3 It shall not be possible to remove the hub cap without application of force.

2.3 The wheel fasteners and hub caps shall not exhibit any fin shaped projections.
