FOREWORD

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by theFoodgrains and Foodgrain Industries Sectional Committee had been approved by the Food andAgriculture Division Council. .

Isabgol husk consists of the dry seed coats of the seeds of Plantogo OVQta Forsk. ( Fam. Plantaginaceal )and is obtained by crushing the seeds and separating the husks by winnowing.

A large quantity of isabgol husk is exported. This highlights the need for quality standards both forconsumer protection and as a guide to good manufacturing practices.,

While formulating this standard, assistance has beentaken from the Pharmacopoeia of India publishedby the Drugs Controllerate of India.

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with,the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall berounded off in accordance with IS 2: 1960 'Rules for rounding ofT numerical values ( revised )'. Thenumber of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be same as that of the specifiedvalue in this standard.

Indian Standard

ISABGOL HUSK- SPECIFICATION

3.1 Description

The isabgol husk shall consist of dry seed coats of theseeds of Plantago ovata Forsk. (Fain Plantaginaceae).

The material shall consist of white or translucent,odourless, thin boat shaped structures, 2 to 3 nun longand 0.5 to 1 nun wide. The taste shall be bland andmucilaginous,

3.1.1 The material shalJ be free from insect or fungusinfestation and from fermented, musty or other objec­tionable odours. It shatl also be free from any addedcolours and flavours and any harmful foreign materialsand from insect and fungus infestation.

3.2 Microscopic Examination

The material when subjected to microscopicexamination shall conform to the followingdescription:

Elongated polygonal cells, 90 to 120 u long, 18to 27 J.1 wide, cellulose waned, thickened by secon­dary deposit.

3.3 Isabgol husk shall be manufactured in premisesmaintained under hygienic conditions (see IS 2491 :1972).

3.4 Swelling lest

Transfer t g sample to a 100-n11 stoppered cylindercontaining 90 ml of water, shake well for 30 secondsand allow to stand for 24 hours, shaking gently on threeoccasions during this period. Add sufficient water toproduce 100 ml, mix gently for 30 seconds, avoidingthe entrainment of air. Allow to stand for 5 hours andmeasure the volume of mucilage, Repeat the deter­miuatiou three more times, The average of the fourdetenni nations is not less than 40 1111.

3.5 The foreign organic matter when determined byhand separation and weighing shall not exceed twopcr~c~t by mass,3.6 Isabgol husk shall also comply with the require.",ments given in Table 1. .

4 PACKING ANDMARKING

4.1 Packing

The material shall be packed in dry, well-closed con­taincrs.

4.1 Marking

Each container shall be suitably marked as to give thefollowing information :

a) Name of the material;b) Source of manufacture;c) Batch or code number;d) Net 1113SS;

e) Data of manufacture; andf) Any other details required under the Standards

of Weights and Measures (Packaged Com ...modities) Rules, 1977.

4.2.1 The container may also be marked with theStandard Mark.

5 SAMPLING

5.1 Representative samples of the material forascertaining conformity to the requirements of thisstandard shall be drawn according to the method givenillAnnexA.

6 TJ4:STS

6.1 Test" shall becarried out by the methods prescribedin 3.2,3.4,3.5,3.6 and col 4 of Table t.6.1 Quality or Reagents

Unless specified otherwise, pure chemicals and dis­tilled water (see IS 1070 : 1992) shall be employed illtests.

NOTE- ·Pure chemicals' shall mean chemicals that donot contain impurities which affect theresultsof analysis.

A-Z.I From each of the containers selected from thelot, a small but approximately equal quantity ofmaterial shall be taken and thoroughly mixed so as toconstitute the composite sample, The quantity ofmaterial in the composite sample shall be three timesthe quantity of material required for carrying out all thetests given ill the specification.

A-2.2 The composite sample shall be divided intothree equal parts, one for the purchaser, another for thesupplier and third for the referee so as to be used in caseof a dispute between the two.

A-Z.3 All the characteristics given in the specificationshall be tested on the composite sample,

A-2.4 The lot shall be declared as conforming to therequirements of the specification, if all the test resultson the composite sample meet the relevant specifica­tion requirements,
