Spring - How to Plant and Grow Strawberries in Containers

Strawberries are one of the easiest plants to grow in containers or pots, in factyou can plant them in almost anything from an old sink to a Wellington Boot andthey even grow well indoors, so get the kids involved. All they need is a fewhours of sunlight per day.

Types of Strawberries. There are two main types of strawberry plants. June-bearing strawberries usuallyproduce one large crop of fruit between late May and late June. A popular choiceJune-bearer is The Cambridge Favourite. This will produce a large crop of orangered fruits full of flavour.Everbearing strawberries don't actually bear fruit continuously, but usually havetwo crops - one in early summer, and another in late summer. The latest breedingin ever-bearing strawberries is The Albion. A mouth-watering, sweet, big, dark-red strawberry staying delicious and juicy throughout the summer. Albion is veryheavy cropping and shows excellent disease resistance making it ideal forgardeners.

Growing Strawberries in a Container or Pot.Good drainage is essential, strawberries hate wet feet - place a layer of broken pots orgravel in the bottom of a container drilled with small holes.Fill with compost allowing enough room for the roots to bespread out (it is beneficial to add water retaining granules andslow release fertiliser to the planting compost). Top up withcompost shaking the plants gently to distribute compost evenlyaround the roots and make sure there are no air pockets. Firmthe compost around the plants.Water well and place in a sunny, sheltered position and keepregularly watered especially in hot weather and while fruit isforming. Never allow them to dry out as this can damage theplants and seriously affect fruiting. If no slow release fertiliser was added to the compost, feed weekly with a liquid tomatofeed during flowering and fruiting. If you follow these simple steps you will be enjoying your own deliciously sweet andjuicy strawberries in the summer! If you wish to keep your strawberries to fruit again next year - cut back the dead foliage inautumn. For pot grown plants keep the roots frost free by covering the pot with fleece orbubble-wrap. Reduce watering over winter but do not allow to completely dry out.In spring begin watering again and feed regularly with a liquid tomato feed.

SeagateCastle

Around 1163 Irvine’s coastline was quite different from today, back thenthe harbour was close to the Seagate Castle (imagine the entire areaaround the cross, High Street, Bank Street and everything between themall and the harbour totally submerged.Irvine was a bustling harbour but progressive silting began to hinder themovement of ships (sometimes stranding them for months at a time) andeventually leaving the coastline we see today. The original Seagate structure was built sometime before 1184 andprobably a wooden structure, built to protect the harbour. The castleoverlooks the oldest street in Irvine, which was once the main routebetween the town and the old harbour at Seagate Foot, which by 1606was useless and abandoned. The castle has had its fair share of distinguished owners .In the 12thcentury it lay within the lordship of Cunninghame and the famiy ofHugh de Morville, Lord High Constable of Scotland. In 1196 the lordship passed from the de Morville family, (through failureof male heirs,) and then descended through various families, amongwhom were the Balliols. The castle information plaque records that the 'Treaty of Irvine' betweenScotland and England was signed at Seagate Castle on 9 July 1297; thiswould have been in the earlier castle. In 1297 Edward I had sent apunitive expedition under Sir Henry Percy to Irvine to quash an armeduprising against his dethronement of JohnBalliol. The Earl of Carrick, Robert Bruce, Bishop Wishart and othersled the Scottish army, however after much argument they decided tosubmit without a fight. The armies had been encamped in sight of eachother, the English at Tarryholme and the Scots at Knadgerhill, with theold Scotts Loch between them. Rodolph deEglinton is said to have hosted the negotiations at Seagate Castle.

Page 15: Irvine Focus Issue 2 2010

The Bruce never accepted the surrender conditionsand Edward I did not confirm it (The memorial canbe seen at the entrance of Knadgerhill Cemetery.)In 1366 the castle was re-built in stone and in 1562-1585 Sir Hugh Montgomerie rebuilt it as a show-piece. The Montgomerie family may have re-builtthe castle as their town house and as a dower house.Recorded on the plaque at the entrance that Mary,Queen of Scots, stayed at the castle in 1563. The3rd earl was a great supporter and he is said to haveentertained the queen and her four Marys; MarySeaton; Mary Beaton; Mary Fleming; and Mary Livingston at thecastle. This visit to the castle is said to be the origin of the town’sMarymass celebrations, held in August of each year,Seagate Castle was inhabited until about 1746 when its roof was re-moved by the Alexander Montgomerie, 10th Earl of Eglinton(1723–1769).After being unroofed in around 1746, Seagate ceased to be inhabitedby family retainers, however the Castle became the haunt ofsmugglers, thieves and beggars. After nightfall the locals shunned it,and if any property was stolen in the town it was the first place to besearched. In the 1800s people still living could remember seeing thesmugglers' " wee still " sitting in the large kitchen fireplace producingillicit spirits. In 1810, Earl Hugh (the 12th Earl) made extensive repairs to thebuilding, blocking up the windows, doors, etc. In 1839 a great stormcaused considerable collapse of stones into the courtyard. Wheninspected in 1883 the vaults, kitchen, and other apartments, werefound full of rubble, soil, and rubbish of all kinds, much of which wasthe refuse chiefly of adjoining properties. The Earl of Eglinton hadthis all removed, which took about a month, the debris being buried inthe Low Green.

Today the argument rages on as to who is responsible for the repairbill expected to be in the millions. What will happen to this history rich castle.

A Stones ThrowIn this section we will be looking at cost effectivedays out for the whole family, in and aroundAyrshire. This issue we take the short trip toKilmarnock’s Dean Castle Country Park.

Dean Castle takes its name from ‘The Dean’ or wooded valley – acommon place name in Scotland. The original keep dates from around1350 with the Palace being added around 110 years later. Built by theBoyd family, it has strong historical connections with many peopleand events in Scottish History.Situated just off the Glasgow road, this beautiful 200 acre parksurrounds the castle and dower house. Now run by East Ayrshire council,It is a great family day out.The 14th century castle its self hosts a fantastic collection of Arms andArmour, historical musical instruments and tapestries that are some ofthe finest anywhere in Europe. The woodland walks range from the castle trail which is a 1km walk tothe two rivers trail which is 2.6 km, providing a variety of beautifulwalks for all ages and abilities. Then there is pets corner, kids and adults alike love exploring theaviaries and ponds which are home to ducks, geese, peacocks andexotic cockatiels, finches and love birds. Pets Corner also has a selec-tion of animals including guinea pigs, rabbits, sheep and pygmy goats. Not forgetting Scott the Clydesdale horse, Timmy and Pip thedonkeys - the noisiest members of PetsCorner and Penny, Bell and Bess thecows .Its great for family photos. At the Visitor Centre you can learnabout local wild life, learn about whatplants, trees, birds and other animalsyou might see when out on the Wood-land Walk .you can also watch the wildlife on The Nature Cam.
