STEM Centerfor Science, Technology, Engineering & Math Education
The foundation for tomorrow’s medical and scientific breakthroughs - right
here on the Research Coast.

Formula for DiscoveryToday’s medical research will
lead to tomorrow’s medical
innovations. Scientists
throughout the region are
engaged in research to discover
advances in medicine, genetics,
immunology and biotechnology.
These dedicated professionals
offer hope to millions who suffer
from disease and medical afflictions.
Our region’s continuing economic development as the Research Coast hinges on providing students with a
world-class education in the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) to pave the
way for the “next generation” of scientific breakthroughs.
Formula for EducationIndian River State College is constructing an $18.5 million Science, Technology, Engineering and Math
(STEM) Center at its St. Lucie West
Campus, in the hub of the region’s
growing biotechnology corridor.
With the College experiencing
20% enrollment growth in the
sciences, the new STEM Center will
provide much-needed classroom
and laboratory space where
students can conduct experiments
using industry-standard scientific
equipment and procedures.
STEM CenterThe three-story 56,000 square-foot facility will house seven laboratories in scientific
fields such as genetics, ecology, chemistry, molecular science, botany, and
microbiology. In addition, IRSC’s STEM Center will feature:
• State-of-the-art, computer-equipped teaching labs designed to
link math and science concepts to practical research, engineering
and industry applications through “real world” projects
• Technology-supported classrooms with the capability to receive and
transmit presentations between IRSC’s Main Campus, area
research institutes, and community STEM resources
• Technology-enhanced “Knowledge Room,” where students will
collaborate on research projects and present their projects to
business and industry leaders
• A well-equipped laboratory to support education for engineering careers
“Today’s research involves the understanding of cutting-edge technology and the comprehension
of advanced mathematical calculations to interpret complex scientific data. The training IRSC
students will receive in the STEM Center will prepare them for careers in agricultural and plant
research to ensure a safe food supply for both domestic and global markets.”
Dr. Calvin E. Arnold
Executive Director, U.S. Horticultural Research Lab, USDA
Formula for SuccessIRSC’s 50-year history of providing exemplary higher education, combined with the state-of-the-art STEM
Center, will produce the well-qualified researchers and laboratory technicians needed to support the
Research Coast.
As employment opportunities continue to expand in their fields of study, these IRSC graduates will remain
in our communities, advancing the area’s workforce and economic development. As they pursue careers
with area research firms, these scientists will continue the search for answers to the world’s pressing
medical and scientific questions.
“The education students receive at IRSC gives them the hands-
on laboratory experience they need to work as lab assistants at
Torrey Pines. The STEM Center will further enhance these skills
so that IRSC graduates are valuable contributory members of the
Torrey Pines team as they conduct life-saving research.”

IRSC’s STEM Center CampaignIt is important that today’s students train in facilities that meet or exceed those they will find in their
future places of employment. In the scientific arena, this means ultra-modern laboratories equipped with
technology needed to conduct extensive research.
Through the IRSC Foundation, the goal of the College is to raise $1 million in private support to enhance
the technology and equipment needed for the STEM Center. We need your assistance to provide the
outstanding classrooms and laboratories required to prepare IRSC students for careers in research.
How Can You Help? You can help through an outright gift of cash, appreciated stocks, real estate, and more. Major gifts may
be pledged for up to five years. Through a deferred gift, you can make provisions in your will, estate plan,
or charitable gift annuity. This method ensures that your legacy will continue even beyond your lifetime.
Naming Opportunities Are AvailableYou can permanently link your name to an IRSC classroom, lab, or educational area through a naming
opportunity. Many highly-visible locations are perfect for honoring loved ones, increasing awareness of
your business, and demonstrating your support of IRSC and our community. You may view the list of
available Naming Opportunities at www.irscfoundation.org.
To help through an outright or deferred gift, please contact Ann Decker, Executive Director of the IRSC
Foundation, at 772-462-4786 or via email at [email protected].
“The programs housed in the STEM Center will provide
a world-class learning environment to support the VGTI
team working on cures for diseases such as AIDS, cancer,
tuberculosis and the diseases associated with emerging
viral infections.”
