IRHA welcomes government acceptance of fuelproblemsThe Irish Road Haulage Association has welcomed thegovernment’s realisation that soaring fuel prices arehaving a dramatic effect on the transport industry inIreland. Commenting on the announcement byGovernment of a cash injection into CIE, Eoin GavinPresident of the Irish Road Haulage Association statesthat Minister Varadkar’s realisation of crippling fuel priceshas sparked government intervention to protect the statetransport company. Like CIE, Irish hauliers are notimmune to increasing fuel costs. Urgency is required on agovernment decision in relation to an Essential User FuelRebate for the haulage industry. The Irish Road HaulageAssociation has spent the last 12 months in talks withGovernment and the Department of Finance in trying tofind a workable solution to this escalating problem. A fuelrebate on Excise Duty will have no cost to the exchequeras Irish haulier’s struggling with fuel costs are currently purchasing their fuel elsewhere in Europe availing of fuel rebatesin other EU countries. 1,400 haulage companies have gone out of business in the last two years and the rate of attrition isnot slowing down. A rebate needs to be introduced or Ireland’s export led economy will grind to a halt.

Logistics jobs created in Northern IrelandRedhead International has opened a 33,000 sq ft depot in Mallusk, Northern Ireland. The facility represents seven figureinvestment in the company’s Northern Ireland infrastructure, and includes a 20 tonne overhead crane for heavy lifting, aswell as modern new offices. Director of Ireland and Scotland Mark Cosgrove said: “Whilst we have had this type ofcapability in Great Britain and Dublin for many years, the new Mallusk depot will allow us to offer customers in NorthernIreland a full package of managed logistics services, including third party office space, warehousing and order fulfilment.”

EU probe TNT takeoverThe European Commission has launched an in-depth investigation under the EU Merger Regulation into the proposedacquisition of TNT Express by UPS. It has set a deadline of 28th November to take a decision on whether the proposedtransaction would significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area. The decision is based on apreliminary investigation which indicated potential competition concerns in the markets for small parcel delivery services,in particular international express services, in numerous member states, where the parties would have very high combinedmarket shares.Commission vice president in charge of competition policy Joaquín Almunia said: “The small package delivery sector is ofstrategic importance for various other industries in Europe. The proposed acquisition could in particular reduce competitionfor the provision of the fastest express delivery services, to the detriment of direct customers and ultimately of Europeanconsumers. The Commission needs to make sure that customers continue to have access to these services at competitiveconditions." Last week UPS anticipated the move by the commission, saying that it would extend the offer period for theproposal.

Private waste firms under pressureThe plight of private waste management companies in the currenteconomic climate has been brought to light recently. Bord naMóna’s decision to write down the value of its waste managementsubsidiary by €23.1 million, five years after it bought the companyfor €61 million, highlights the issues facing private wastemanagement companies in Ireland. A combination of government-imposed landfill levies – designed to encourage diversion of wastefrom landfills to other more environmentally-friendly means ofdisposal – an estimated 30 per cent drop in the volume of wastebeing produced across the country, and the cut-throat pricingpolicy of an industry that is becoming increasingly competitivehave served to weigh heavily on some of Ireland’s largest privatewaste management companies. NTR subsidiary Greenstar posteda loss of €64 million for the year ended March 2011, for example, while Limerick-based Mr Binman entered receivership last year. While larger players such as Bord na Móna’s AES bemoan theproliferation of smaller companies in the market – chief executiveGabriel D’arcy called yesterday for greater consolidation in thesector – the flip-side is that many private operators believe thepresence of a State-owned body in the private market is unfair.

Bord na Móna’s €23 million impairment charge also raises questions about the group’s diversification strategy. WhileD’arcy was not at the helm when AES was acquired, the decision to buy into the private waste sector at the height of theboom seems ill-judged.Bord na Móna said yesterday it does not intend to sell AES, stressing its “strategic importance” to the group. The reality isthat it would not be able to offload the business without incurring a huge loss. Greenstar, for example, has effectively beenon the market in different forms for two years. As the debate over the role of State assets continues, a bit of soul-searching on the part of Bord na Móna wouldn’t go amiss.

RHA calls for transparency in the oil marketReports that oil prices may have been another victim of price manipulation come as little surprise to the Road HaulageAssociation. “This issue isn’t just about the motorist,” said RHA chief executive Geoff Dunning. “The price of oil dictatesthe price we pay for all fuel types. To learn that there is a possibility of oil traders worldwide manipulating the price comesas little surprise, given the recent news that our own financial system was rigged for the benefit of the banks. “We find itquite baffling that the oil market, as one of the world’s key commodity sectors, is unregulated and appears to rely, to agreat extent, on the honesty of the trader to return accurate data regarding their activities. “The G20 revelation which hasfound the oil market to be wide open to ‘manipulation or distortion’ must be acted upon as a matter of urgency. How manymore financial stones must be overturned before we can see a fair financial system in which we can place ourconfidence?”

The private waste sector isbecoming increasingly competitive

Diesel prices to continue risingHauliers will continue to feel the pinch at the pumps as Ireland hasrecorded its highest rise in oil prices since February. The weakeningeuro is said to be one of the factors pushing up the price of fuel, alongwith escalating tensions in the Middle East. This resulted in an 8% hikein the cost of wholesale oil for July, which is expected to have a knock-on effect for consumers. Power Trader at Bord Gais Energy, JohnHeffernan, has said motorists and hauliers are not likely to see a let upin rising prices for some time.

Farmers urged to apply for A5compensationUp to 200 farmers and landowners affected by the construction of theA5 dual carriageway in County Tyrone have been urged to ensure theyare adequately compensated. The Department for RegionalDevelopment (DRD) says that of the 419 landowners along the A5 route,171 will be affected by the two sections that are being started this year.Compensation claims can be submitted from September 11th when thevesting order comes into force. The two sections will run for 15km fromNewbuildings to Strabane and for 23km from Ballygawley to Omagh.Work starts in the autumn and will take two-and-a-half years tocomplete. Strabane District Council chairman Thomas Kerrigan says it’svital that those with land affected receive the proper compensation:“Strabane District Council is fully aware that some local residents andlandowners are strongly opposed to this project because it is directlyaffecting their land or their property. Council would urge the departmentto fully compensate those landowners affected by compulsory purchaseor acquisition. “Council trusts the department will work to ensure thatlocal landowners and residents are inconvenienced as little as possibleby this project.”

Varadkar welcomes Luas BXDdecisionMinister for Transport Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar has welcomedthe decision by An Bord Pleanála to grant a Railway Order for the LuasBXD line. Minister Varadkar said: “Luas BXD will revolutionise publictransport in Dublin. It will deliver a joined up commuter railway networkby linking the two existing Luas lines. It will extend Luas into the northinner city to the new DIT campus at Grangegorman and will terminate atBroombridge where it will interchange with the Maynooth line." MinisterVaradkar continued “When complete, Dublin will have an integrated railand light rail network that is the norm in other modern cities. For the firsttime, it will be possible to get a train in Maynooth or Leixlip and get outin Dundrum or Sandyford with just one change. Similarly, you will beable to get on the Luas at Tallaght and with just one change, get out atthe new DIT campus or at Trinity College.” Minister Varadkar concluded:“The Business Case for Luas BXD needs to be updated to take intoaccount the changes made by An Board Pleanála. However I amconfident that the business case remains robust and I expect that thearrangements for advance works and tendering will be finalised as soonas possible. I have instructed the RPA to begin work on this immediatelywith the intention that construction can commence in the near future.”

Safety works to begin in Jack Lynch Tunnel

The delayed fire safety upgrade on the JackLynch Tunnel is finally set to begin in earlySeptember. But motorists can breathe a sigh of relief after itwas confirmed that the project — which wasdue to begin last January and take up to sixmonths — will now be completed within threemonths. BAM will be appointed main contractorsfor the work. The tunnel will be closed for up tothree nights in August for survey works. It willthen close six nights a week from earlySeptember with a completion date in December. The €5m contract involves a massive retrofittingof fire retardant slabs to the tunnel walls to bringit into line with new EU standards. High-qualitycalcium silicate cement boards will be bolted tothe walls and ceiling of the tunnel structure. Theinitial proposal which emerged last year was tocarry out the work seven nights a week over sixmonths, running right through last Christmas. But the city’s business leaders reacted angrily and following lengthy talks, acompromise was agreed. Engineers postponed the work until early last January to facilitate Christmas trading, and alsoscaled back the tunnel closures. However, city engineers said last night unforeseen technical and legal issues emergedand delayed the awarding of the contract. It is understood that the tunnel will close six nights a week, remaining open onFriday nights to facilitate late-night shopping.

Work will soon begin onthe Jack Lynch Tunnel

New Doosan MT31 ADT Purchased by KilsaranKilsaran Concrete, part of The Kilsaran Group, has purchased anew Doosan MT31 articulated dump truck (ADT) from PhilipMcCormack Plant Ltd for the company’s Gallstown Quarry atGrangebellew in County Louth in Ireland. The Gallstown Quarry was acquired in the early nineties as a greenfield site and has since been developed into a complete installationof crushing and screening, washing, blacktop, block making andreadymix concrete facilities.Formerly branded Moxy before the range was acquired by Doosanin 2008, this line of trucks has been purchased by The KilsaranGroup since the early 1990s. The first to be bought was the MT30model in 1992, since when the company has purchased differentgenerations of the MT31 model, with the latest machine atGallstown Quarry being the third generation of the MT31 truck to berun by Kilsaran.

High Performance TrucksOne of the main reasons for choosing the Doosan ADT range again is the reliability and dependability of the trucks overthe last 20 years, backed by the 3-year warranty covering the powerline and engine from Philip McCormack Plant, basedin Clane in County Kildare. The trucks are also maintained under service contracts run by Philip McCormack Plant, whichhelp to ensure that Kilsaran receives a very good residual value for the Doosan trucks even for those with well over20,000 working hours.Peter Ryan, Location Manager at the Gallstown Quarry, said: “As well as the high residual value, it was the attractivepackage offered by Philip McCormack Plant that clinched the deal for the new MT31 ahead of Doosan’s competitors. Thetrucks have been great performers over the years and I’m sure this will continue under the Doosan brand if theperformance of the new MT31 ADT is anything to go by.”Founded by the late Patrick McKeown in 1964, The Kilsaran Group is a family-owned and run business that has grown tobecome Ireland’s largest independent manufacturer of concrete products. Despite its growth over the last 50 years, thecompany has succeeded in retaining its family values throughout the business by working as a team that prides itself onits honesty, integrity and transparency.Peter Ryan added: “Philip McCormack Plant is also a family run business and we deal closely with both Philips, father andson, at the company, who offer us a very close, personal service that matches the way we like to do business.”Kilsaran Concrete commenced commercial rock extraction at Gallstown in 1995 and since then routine environmentalmonitoring of noise and dust has been carried out on a regular basis. The quarry is operated to the very highestenvironmental standards, with procedures, practices and policies adopted to minimise the impact of the quarry on allaspects of the local environment; this includes the implementation of a self-imposed environmental managementsystem.Kilsaran Concrete is a member of the Irish Concrete Federation (ICF), which represents 95% of the production output inthe quarrying/concrete products sector in the Republic of Ireland.Gallstown Quarry has been honoured with a Five Star Award in the ICF’s biannual national Green Aggregates Award, aninitiative promoting good environmental-management practices and operational performance.Following hard on the heels of this achievement, Kilsaran Concrete entered the UEPG (European Aggregates Association)Sustainable Development Awards, where it was presented with a Special Award for Outstanding Team Dedication in theEnvironmental Best Practice category, in recognition of the good practice in evidence at Gallstown Quarry.

High Quality StoneThe greywacke deposit at Gallstown possesses significant attributes in terms of its quality and physical properties, including a high polished-stone value of 65 and low aggregate impact and aggregate abrasion values. The stone is usedas a construction material in a broad range of applications, including high-quality surface-dressings. It is suitable for use inall road-surfacing projects including motorway construction. The quarry produces a range of aggregates, asphalt and macadam, hardcore and fill materials. Ready-mixed concreteand concrete blocks are also manufactured on site in a modern plant utilising raw materials from the quarry.Weighing in at 22.7 tonne, the MT31 ADT features a proven, powerful Scania DC9 engine providing a gross power outputof 255 kW (347 HP) at 2200 rpm, a maximum 28 tonne payload, central lubrication, a rear view camera and permanent 6-wheel drive to ensure maximum stability and equal weight distribution.Ideal for quarry operations, Doosan ADTs are optimised for extreme off road performance. The exceptionally agileundercarriage ensures that Doosan trucks can drive on terrain where other trucks may struggle to follow and also performjust as well on normal construction sitessuch as road works and mass excavation hauling.

Meath Recovery is first Irish operator to land 40thanniversary Dyson deal

What better way to markyour company’s ‘comingof age’ than by investingin your first brand newpiece of vehicle recoveryequipment, a DysonEnforcer with two-wheellift conversion. J&S MotorRepairs, of Navan,County Meath, wasfounded 21 years ago byJim O’Sullivan, who wasjoined in the business 13years ago by his sonShane. Today, sistercompany MeathRecovery relies on a fleetof four dedicated vehiclesto provide a 24-hourservice covering most ofLeinster including theGreater Dublin area.

Meath Recovery’s new Roger Dyson Enforcer two-wheel lift has a 2,500kg capacity E-Type locker storage body and aradio-remote controlled power tilt boom. Mounted on an Iveco 65C18 crewcab chassis, the body provides ample storagespace for extra recovery equipment, parts and spares to deal with any roadside rescue. And it came fully equipped andready to work, thanks to Roger Dyson’s 40th anniversary, limited edition offer. Britain’s leading specialist vehicle recoveryequipment manufacturer is in the process of building 40 conversions at its production facility in Droitwich, Worcestershire. All will come with additional ‘no cost’ extras, Roger’s way of giving something back to the industry as a thank-you for hisfour decades in the recovery business. Jim O’Sullivan confirms: “We were certainly very well looked after; with all of theextra equipment Roger threw in for free – items like a trolley jack, storage, strobe lighting, jump leads, sockets and cables,LED working lights, dolly wheel storage and even a broom and shovel – it was a fantastic deal. Jim continues: “Our lastthree trucks have all been fitted with Dyson bodies but this is the first brand new one. As the saying goes, his equipment‘does exactly what it says on the tin’. It’s exceptionally well built, easy to operate and has presented us with no problemswhatsoever.” And he adds: “My son Shane agreed the initial price for our new truck and that’s exactly what we ended uppaying. What’s more, Roger delivered on every promise he made in terms of the build and delivery date – it was a realpleasure working with the man.” Meath Recovery is a fully approved contractor to the AA, RAC (Hibernian Aviva), AXA,Mondial Assistance, Europ Assistance and MIS Claims, as well as many garages and vehicle dealerships. The ‘no cost’upgrade offer extends to every product in the Roger Dyson range, which also includes Hydraloader slidebeds, vehicle andequipment transporters, Commander heavy recovery units and NRC sliding and rotating cranes. Even Landoll travellingaxle trailers qualify for the free upgrades. The limited edition models are available on a ’first come, first served’ basis andare proving extremely popular, so operators wishing to take advantage of one of the great deals on offer should registertheir interest or contact Roger without delay on 01905 775808/9.

Haulage company banned ’to save lives’Jobs are under threat after a Scottish haulier had its licence withdrawn following a series of major safety failings. Themove means Highland Car Crushers will no longer be able to operate its fleet of eight vehicles and two trailers to haulscrap, agricultural goods, timber and waste. Announcing her decision, traffic commissioner Joan Aitken acknowledged jobsmight be lost but said it would be a “gross dereliction of duty” if she did not impose the penalty. “Do I need to await adeath or serious injury?” she asked. “My resounding answer is that the whole purpose of goods vehicle operator licensingis to protect the public from the harms that arise when vehicles are not maintained properly; when loads are not safelysecured and when drivers are not properly rested and fit for the job.” Further investigations identified issues with thecompany’s vehicle maintenance, compliance with dangerous goods regulations, a failure to identify drivers’ hours offencesand carry out appropriate driver licence checks, the arrest and subsequent conviction of a driver stopped in a companyvehicle for drink-driving and the failure of the company to declare director Hunter Fraser’s conviction for drink- driving. MrFraser — who runs the company with his father Sinclair from centres in Carsegate Road North and at Poyntzfield Mainson the Black Isle — said the company would not be closing down, despite its directors being barred from holding a licencefor five years, but refused to comment further. “It is appropriate and proportionate that I put this operator out of business inso far as that business involves the use of heavy goods vehicles,” said Miss Aitken.

Cork oil fieldreaches newlevelExperts have said an oil field offthe Cork coast contains four-timesas much oil as previously thought.Providence Resources estimatestheir Barryroe well is home tomore than 1.6 billion barrels. It hasfar exceeded expectations ofprevious estimates released just afew months ago. NewstalkBusiness Editor Ian Guider said itis very promising for the company.Mr Guider said: "They have beendoing further testing there andlooking at some data on the fieldand they are saying they havefound a four-fold increase in thepotential amount of oil they couldrecover from this field. "Theaverage North Sea gas field wouldbe about that size and they werefound over 30 years ago. Thatgives you an indication of how bigthis field could be." ProvidenceResources is now seeking a€1billion partnership with a majoroil company to deliver the oil itdiscovered. “We're certainly talking€1bn - and then several billionsover the field life," chief executiveTony O'Reilly Jnr told the SundayIndependent. "This involves bigcapital expenditure, with billionsbeing invested, so the partner weteam with won't be a smallcompany. It will be a majorindustry player.” Who could thisbe? “Some of the larger North Seaplayers, but also internationalplayers - I'm talking to everybody. We had overtures from big NorthSea operators that wanted to meetwith us and we pushed them awayseveral months ago because wedidn't know what we had at thatstage - we only had pre-flowtests”. Providence has already put€500m behind its drilling at thesite but will now start to reduce its80% stake in Barryroe to get in aninvesting partner that will developthe oil. “This is a big oil resourceby world standards,” O'Reillyinsists. “Plus it's not Kurdistan orSudan, you're not going to getshot. It's a nice place to dobusiness, and it's not the tundra. That already attracts players in theoffshore arena. And Ireland alsohas an attractive fiscal regime.”

TIP add six new mobile service units(MSU’s) to nationwide service fleet

In support of the company's successful FleetCare fleet maintenance programme,TIP Trailer Services has added a further six new Renault Master mobile service units(MSU’s) that are now strategically located across its nationwide network of depotscovering the UK and Ireland. At the same time, TIP has also taken on six newtechnicians to operate these new vehicles. This now means that TIP currently has a nationwide fleet of almost 50 mobileservice units, providing support not just for the growing number of new FleetCarecontracts, but also for the existing TIP rental fleet and for non account PayGocustomers.According to Karl Davies, Services and Marketing Director, TIP Trailer Services,“These brand new vehicles are completely self-sufficient, requiring no external airsupply. Their detailed specification and high equipment levels give us the facility tocheck, inspect, service and repair trailers, either on customer premises or out on theroad, without the need for any additional support requirements, making TIP uniqueas a trailer maintenance service provider.”Supplied by sister company GE Fleet on a three-year deal, each of the six newRenault Master LWB35 panel vans is fitted out with a BOTT conversion kit thatincludes racking, generators, compressors, small tools and a trailer check system, which covers monitoring of all electrical functions on trailers.Sporting the latest FleetCare livery, these self-contained MSU’s represent a veryhigh level of investment by TIP in each vehicle and supplement the current networkof service centres and ATF's provided under the TIP umbrella.“Our FleetCare product, covering third-party maintenance, has expanded year-on-year to form a major business division within TIP. As a result, we have developed anationwide structure to support these services, of which the MSU’s are a valuableasset that enhances the speed of response and quality of service that we canprovide to our customers,” added Karl Davies.

Cork road at most dangerousExperts with Britain’s department of transport have claimed that an accident-pronesection of a national secondary road in Co Cork does not have adequate "skidresistance". A series of crashes, including a fatal collision last September, haveoccurred on the stretch of the N71 at a corner known as "chip van corner" on thewestern side of Innishannon, near Bandon. The British Transport ResearchLaboratory conducted a survey of the roadway on the main route into West Corkfrom the city. According to a recently published report from the group circulated tocounty councillors in Cork, it advised that "skid resistance on the road was not ashigh as would have been anticipated for a relatively new section (of tarred road)".County manager Martin Riordan said the skid resistance problem "was withinapproved limits" but admitted it might not be as high as should be expected on anew road surface.

3.5 million used M50 in MayA new record of 3.5 million vehicles travelled on the M50 in May – anincrease of 3% on the same period last year. The figure representsaround 110,000 vehicle journeys per day. The increase is surprising asthe recession had resulted in a decline in traffic in recent years, particularly in HGV usage. A spokesman for the National RoadsAuthority (NRA) says traffic patterns suggest much of the increase isdue to changed journey patterns in response to low congestion on theradial route following the completion of the upgrade and the switch tobarrier-free tolling. The increase in traffic volumes has prompted arenewed focus on a demand management strategy for the route. Sincethe upgrade of the route, the M50 has an effective capacity of around160,000 vehicles per day, but congestion starts to impact at much lowertraffic levels – between 120,000 and 130,00. Part of the reason for thisis that certain parts of the route - namely where the M1, M4 and M11join - are already heavily trafficked. The M4/M7 junction was at 120,000vehicle journeys per day in 2010 and volumes have increased sincethen.

TomTom Business Solutions - Managing fuel costs forbusinessThe most appropriate way for businesses to tackle fuel costs, and their bottom line impact, is to introduce technologysystems that provide the tools to instigate operational and behavioural changes encouraging fuel-efficient driving. Thefollowing white paper considers the challenges faced and how this can be achieved.

THE RISING FUEL COST TIDEA rising demand for oil, both in the short and long-term, has been widely predicted by economists worldwide – and at thepump, this is set to continue hitting fleet businesses hard. The average diesel price in Europe has risen 92% since 2005 and premium unleaded prices by 109% according to TheEuropean Commission’s Market Observatory for Energy1.

THE BUSINESS CHALLENGEHigh fuel costs, combined with today’s highly competitive business environment and tight margins, have put companiesunder increasing pressure to scrutinise their operational performance.Fuel is frequently regarded as the largest single cost in running a vehicle fleet. For a 7.5 tonne rigid HGV, fuel billsaccount for between 23 and 27 per cent of vehicle and driver costs depending upon mileage2. When leasing a lightcommercial vehicle, fuel accounts for 19 per cent of the lease price, with insurance accounting for 11 per cent andmaintenance a further 10 per cent 3.

TOP TIPS

• Businesses should tackle rising fuel costs from a change management perspective, implementing an appropriatecompany-wide efficiency policy• They should set up a communications plan to engage with all drivers.• A reliable fleet management system should be used to measure performance and track the success of the efficiencyinitiative.• The system should offer management insights into fleet activity, relaying information in real-time and in a clear, concise, dashboard.• Drivers should be empowered to make a change in driving style:- Offer immediate feedback to drivers on their performance behind the wheel, with progress updates to positively effectchange.- Introduce navigation devices with live traffic information for efficient, stress free, driving and reduced mileage.• Reward fuel efficient driving, celebrate success.• Offer driver training to those who are under-performing.

FUEL SAVING OPTIONSAs fuel expenditure is not a fixed business overhead, fluctuating depending upon vehicle type, mileage and driving stylebehind the wheel, companies can take a number of steps to reduce fuel consumption.Upgrading a fleet by purchasing or leasing more fuel-efficient vehicles can have a considerable impact, although the cost

Increase in trafficvolumes on the M50

Page 16: Irish Trucker September 2012

of doing so will frequently be financially prohibitive.Ensuring vehicles are properly and regularly maintained can also be an influencing factor. Clogged air filters and poorlytuned engines can reduce mpg, while a study has revealed how fitting the right tyres, inflated to the correct pressures, can cut fuel consumption by up to 15 per cent 4.

THE QUICKEST, MOST EFFECTIVE SOLUTIONThe most logical and compelling solution for realising an immediate return is to positively influence driving behaviour, promoting a more eco-friendly, fuel-efficient, performance behind the wheel. In order to achieve this effectively, companies require fleet visibility and clear management information, starting with aninsight into the fuel efficiency of every vehicle and driver in the company. By setting a benchmark on fuel efficiency for anentire mobile workforce, managers can pinpoint sub-standard driving performances for individual employees. However, simply identifying a problem is not sufficient to improve fleet-wide mpg – businesses need to discover the rootcause. Driver behaviour data is required to inform businesses where improvements can be made to optimise drivingperformance, from reducing incidents of speeding 5 or idling to eradicating harsh steering or braking.Advanced fleet management technologies can provide this information - relayed to managers’ computer screens via fleetmanagement software – and offer businesses the required tools to release significant operational savings. They can allow fleet operators to monitor driver speeds by generating detailed speed analysis reports and even offer on-board diagnostics, enabling fleet managers to measure and reduce fuel costs by taking live data direct from vehicles. Moreover, all of this information can be reviewed retrospectively or in real time, both for individual employees or entirefleets, enabling companies to target fuel-efficient driver training where it is most needed.

INVOLVING, HELPING AND EMPOWERING DRIVERSPositively influencing driver behaviour also requires the empowerment of drivers to really effect change.Recent advancements in TomTom’s sat nav devices include real-time driver feedback to employees. This means driversthemselves can now see their fuel efficiency, or be warned of speeding or excessive steering and braking, by a simplealert on their sat nav – a significant step in giving tools to the driver to facilitate learning whilst driving, and putting theresponsibility with the driver to improve their driving style in line with efficiency and safety targets.Sat nav device with live traffic information can also help users route around congestion and avoid inefficient start-stopjourneys.

BUSINESS BEST PRACTICE

Reporting functions of fleet management technology enable driver performance data to be measured against pre-definedbusiness targets. If businesses introduce processes to monitor and utilise this effectively, not only can this directly impactthe bottom line, it can help managers establish safer, greener, driving policies.Businesses are advised to use the technology in conjunction with driver training and those that do so can establishsustainable driver improvement programmes.Furthermore, celebrating success can dramatically effect change. Although drivers know that businesses have anobligation to manage their assets efficiently, employee incentive programmes can play a key role in encouragingengagement. Fleet drivers with the best annual mpg, for example, might be rewarded with a cash prize or all employeescould enjoy a percentage of fuel cost savings as part of their remuneration.

Xbee aims to reduce fuel bills for trucksOne of the greatest expenses in owning a truck is the on-going fuel bill. The price of fuel has risen dramatically and ispredicted to rise further. Load rates from customers have not risen in line with fuel costs and therefore the margin isbecoming squeezed to the extent of becoming non-existent. The increasing use of bio-fuels, with their hydroscopicproperties and reduced energy yield, further increase costs. The solution to the problem is Xbee. Xbee has numerous benefits and, amazingly, they are all contained within the oneproduct.

1. Xbee enhances fuel burn by hyper-oxygenating molecules. This reduces the amount of energy required to ignite thefuel. This means that Xbee can reduce fuel consumption by approximately 10%. The variation in results is more aboutthe length of time that Xbee may have been in the fuel prior to consumption.2. Xbee has been proven in numerous certified tests to considerably reduce greenhouse gas emissions byapproximately 30% overall. Percentage variations exist in CO2, CO, NO,NO2,VOC.3. Xbee is an enzyme and is therefore an active product, unlike chemical agents. Xbee has the ability to act as acatalyst on numerous molecules again and again. This means that the % increase in fuel economy and the reduction inemissions have a time dependency.4. The Xbee enzyme has a cleansing effect on fuel. It breaks down contaminants, dismantles fungal growth, anddissolves petroleum-based sludge. In essence, the enzyme acts as an organically-obtained surfactant (detergent) whichneutralises charged atoms and keeps them from clinging to each other or to other surfaces.5. One major contaminant of fuel is water. Bio-fuels are hydroscopic and attract water. During the day the fuel attractswater and at night exhales it. This accelerates the build-up of water in the tank bottom. As the proportion of bio-fuelsincreases, water becomes even more problematic. However, Xbee acts as a water dispersant, keeping water dispersedthroughout fuel so it can be burned during normal engine operation.6. Due to enhanced fuel burn, Xbee also eliminates several other problems. As the flame spread burns more of the fuelcharge, and with less fuel being forced past the exhaust valves, flame quenching in the exhaust stack is reduced, thuseliminating soot formation.7. Xbee is the only non-chemical that will work with all fuel types: Petrol, Diesel, Gas Oil, Kerosene and heavy oils likeHFO 380. However the main requirement is that by adding Xbee to the fuel it should remain within the internationalcertified limits. Intertek Caleb Brett, the internationally-accredited laboratory, has published results that certify that Xbeeoperates within the accepted “fuel norms”. Prodrive in the UK has also undertaken an official CEC test on Diesel andGasoline in line with the CEC procedures. These were also supplemented by the SSC laboratory in Italy, accredited bySINAL, all shown on our website www.xbee.co8. Major companies like Caterpillar and Wartsila recommend Xbee.9. Results have been seen in large and small engines, of various manufacturers.

However, what about user experiences? Some major companies throughout Europe have tried Xbee scientifically and theircomments and tests are also shown on the web-site www.xbee.co.

1. Users of Xbee have carried out endoscopic studies inside engines (and also when cylinder heads were removed), and have found the absence of carbon deposits to be marked.

2. When fuel tanks have been examined the tanks are clean3. Filters have been found to be exceptionally clean4. Water in the filter system is shown to be absent5. Vehicles burn the fuel more efficiently with either better fuel economy or greater power yield6. They are more easily started in the mornings7. Reduced emissions verified either by tests or visually8 Increased injector lifespan9. Effects have been shown in lorry engines, cars, trucks, generator engines and large ship engines10. Reduced maintenance spending

In summary we can say that:Xbee is only the fuel enzyme that works in all fuels. The enzyme bio-technology is cutting edge and fully documentedIt has the certification to give the user confidence that it complies with the required standards.Certified technical results in emissions and enhanced performance from reliable laboratoriesare availableIt has customer acceptance and testimonials to add confidence for the new customer

Xbee UK has documented the certification, testimonials, and scientific tests on fuel usages and on emissions to prove theclaims. Numerous customers in shipping, haulage, coaches, agriculture, vans and general vehicle owners have giventestimonials about its results. The benefits of low emissions, reduced maintenance costs and a cleaner fuel system withreduced carbon build-up should also be significant. We have on-site tools to calculate savings and carbon reduction. Gray & Adams deliver new ferry spec trailersNorthern Ireland trailer manufacturer Gray & Adams has designed ferry spec trailers for Shetland Transport to increaserigidity and protect them from damage on ferry voyages across the North Sea.Every day up to a dozen of its trailers make the 12-hour, overnight crossing to and from Aberdeen, or between theOrkneys and the mainland. Founder and managing director Hamish Balfour, said: “When the sea’s up the gravitationalforces can be immense… Plus, of course, lateral forces will also be acting on the trailer throughout the voyage.” ”Twentyyears ago our trailers were disintegrating because they couldn’t take the pressure. But the various strengtheningmeasures that Gray & Adams builds into its ferry specification trailers mean we no longer have to worry. We’ve workedclosely with the manufacturer as it has refined the design over the years.”

The 2012 Full of the Pipe Truck show took place in a new venue this year asthe Cavan Equestrian Centre held the event for the first time ever. Eventorganisers Kevin Mulqueen and Colin Hegarthy moved venue and thisyear's show was held on the June Bank Holiday weekend.

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS18

Full of the Pipe provesa huge successFull of the Pipe provesa huge success

Following the success of lastyear's event, Kevin and Colinwere aiming to improve on that

and the show was intended to be moreappealing to a wider audience withmany more attractions included.

To say the show turned out to be ahuge success would be anunderstatement as Full of the Pipeproved to be the most successful truckshow in Ireland ever.

Kevin admits that he did not know what

to expect from this year's, but stressedthat the feedback that they havereceived since the show has beennothing but positive.

"We moved the event to the biggestequestrian complex in Ireland, the

Page 20: Irish Trucker September 2012

Cavan EquestrianComplex, with 12,000square metres underroof and also outdoorexhibition areas and itproved to be a wisemove as everyonewas delighted withthe facilities.

“People could stayinside or out and onehaulier said to meduring the night that itwas a great decisionto have it in Cavanand I asked him why;his reply was to lookoutside and ithappened to beraining at the time. With the weather wehave been having, itwas essential to havesome sort of cover, but we couldn't haveasked for any betterin the equestriancentre.”

With a top classvenue, two bars, onsite restaurant, fullshower and changingfacilities, already thefacilities were in placeto make it a betterevent than ever andthat's how it panned

out as no one could fault the venue. The weekend started on Saturday

June 2, where all trucks wereregistered on a first come, first servedbasis between 2pm and midnight, sono one had to worry about submittingapplications this year. There were newcategories added to the show, meaningthat there were over 20 awards up forgrabs.

“There was a greater interest in thisyear's show and the amount of peoplecontacting us looking for informationwas unreal. We were not just cateringfor the truckers this year though, as carenthusiasts were also be catered foralong with all the family.”

“We didn't know what to expect rightup until the Friday evening when thetrucks started arriving. In all there was182 trucks registered for the weekendand we were absolutely delighted withthat. We noticed that trucks were beingprepared earlier than in previous yearsas there was great interest in thedifferent categories being judged.

“Of course, the main event was to find

the Ireland's best Scania 143. This wasa very interesting category and therewas loads of interest in it. The 143 isthe most popular truck in Ireland andthis was our way of honouring it. Indeedsomething we learned from the showwas that there are different types of the143, so next year we are going to havea few different categories in that sectionalone.”

There were many trade stands on siteover the weekend also, the majority ofwhich were catering for the haulageindustry, while others catered for thecars and even children. “There was inthe region of 20 trade stands at thevenue catering for everyone. We alsosold a huge amount of merchandisingon the Monday when the competitorswere leaving the show, which issomething we hope to build on for nextyear also.

“The fact that it was a family showattracted a wider audience and to givean idea of the crowd that attended,Hunky Dory's handed out over 3,000bags of crisps by the Sunday.”

Already the support is strong for nextyear. Boreman Lighting are the mainsponsor for the event, along with topsponsors Moran Signs and the CavanCrystal Hotel, and that's just a start aswe begin planning for next year.

“Without the sponsors, we wouldn'thave a show, so I'm grateful to themand the many people that have helpedout in organising the event. I'm notgoing to name them individually as I'msure I'll leave someone out, but theyknow who they are.”

Learning from this year's show, Kevinand Colin intend to tweak certain areasto make it even more appealing andone way they intend doing this is bychanging the way trucks are judged.“We know that we have to freshen it upagain next year and we are looking at afew different ways of doing that andhopefully opening it up to an evenbroader range of people.

“Lastly I would like to thank everyoneinvolved for their help in putting theshow together. I'd like to give a specialmention to Peter Rees, who attendsmany truck shows where he takesphotographs and he has been with usfor the past few years. We look forwardto seeing you at the Cavan EquestrianCentre again on the June Bank Holidayweekend, next year.”

All items can be ordered over thephone or securely online using the

dedicated ACP website –www.allcommercialparts.ie – with eithercredit card or Paypal paymentaccepted and immediate dispatchguaranteed.

ACP boasts an excellent workingrelationship / partnership with all themajor names in the industry. They stocktractor parts from John Deere, MasseyFerguson, New Holland and Case, forexample, and carry the full range ofCorona tools. They also stock all FordTransit van spares and are an officialParker Store and Hyster Forklifts agent.Other notable brands stocked includeHonda , Stanley Welders , CoronaTools , Castrol and Fleetguard

In terms of truck parts, Michael notes:“We have absolutely everything youcould need for a truck. You could nearlybuild a truck from scratch using theparts we have here in the store – fromthe bumper to the taillight andeverything in between. Our parts arespurious but a lot of our suppliers alsosupply the Original EquipmentManufacturers – so they are of thehighest quality. Volvo, Scania, MAN,Hino, DAF and Iveco parts would beamongst our best sellers.”

Michael Mannion is the founder andMD of both Mannion Quarries and AllCommercial Parts, having establishedboth businesses from scratch.Operating out of Castlesampson, justoutside Athlone, Mannion Quarriessupplies crushed stone to localbuilders, developers and countycouncils. It was out of this originalbusiness that ACP evolved organically,as Michael relates:

“All Commercial Parts opened ourdoors in March 2007. Initially, we hadthe quarry business where we wererunning a lot of our own trucks and wewere finding it increasingly difficult toget spare parts anywhere in the localarea. This was very restrictive and a lotof the local truckers told me they hadthe same experience. So I decided tostart selling truck parts myself. Initially,we sold small quantities out of a smallunit in Blyry Industrial Estate. Then inDecember 2010, in response to risingdemand for a wide range of commercialparts, we moved to the currentpremises – a 14,000 sq ft facility here inMoydrum Business Park.”

It was an inspired move, as theproprietor confirms: “Since we moved

we have expanded into a wider rangeof hand tools, power tools, garageequipment, lawnmowers, truck andtrailer parts etc. The landscape haschanged a lot in the last few years. Weused to deal with a lot of plant andmachinery but that work has beenreplaced by more and more agriculturalwork. The trucks side of the businesshas remained steady, though.”

ACP draws a steady flow ofcustomers from within a 20-mile radius

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS 35

Page 35: Irish Trucker September 2012

but they adapt a proactiveapproach to drumming upbusiness and, to this end, alsohave a sales team out on theroad calling to garages andother potential end users.

Would it be fair to say theyhave found their niche market?“Well, there’s nobody elsedoing truck or tractor partslocally and we also give anexceptional service,” saysMichael. “We have over 40,000different parts numbers in theshop. We have great staff –employing three in the officeplus a girl in accounts and twolads on the road. We also havethe best prices in the midlandsas well as an excellentcomputer system in place, sowe are in a strong positiongoing forward.”

At the moment, about 70% ofcustomers call to the counterand do business the old-

fashioned way but it isconceivable that moreand more ACPcustomers will use thewebsite and conductbusiness online infuture. “Tractor partshave become verypopular and we havedeveloped an excellentreputation in this area.We are the onlycompany in themidlands doing bothtruck and tractor partsso we have somethinghere for everybody,”Michael continues.

“During the Celtic Tiger, everybody was buying newvehicles but things havechanged and operators are farmore inclined now to buy partsand to keep their existingvehicles on the road for as longas possible. All we need is adescription of the part and thechassis number of the vehicleand we will find and supply anexact match.”

Finally, looking to the future,Michael is optimistic that ACPwill continue to thrive: “I thinkwe can keep growing it. I’malways sourcing new productlines to add to existing ones. The distribution of partsnationwide is definitely onearea where we can grow andwe still have plenty of spacehere in the store to suit ourneeds. It can be hard to keepon top of things at times as wehave up to one-million eurosworth of parts in stock at anygiven time, but we know whatwe’re doing and we’ll continueto provide an excellentservice.”

Donegal companymaking wavesBradley Transport has been capturing the headlines for all the right reasons. When Irish Trucker popped into the Buncrana, County Donegal base for anupdate last month, there wasn’t a lorry to be seen. The 24-strong fleet wasall out on the road, busy providing an excellent temperature-controlledlogistics service between Ireland and Europe. “Sure it’s a busy time of year, anyway,” Peter Bradley quipped modestly…

In March, Donegal-based Bradley Transport grabbedsome welcome national headlines when they wereshortlisted as finalists in four different categories -

Logistics Company of the Year, Transport Company of theYear, Logistics and Transport Client/Supplier AchievementAward and Future Achiever Award - of the prestigious IrishLogistics and Transport Awards 2012.

Described as ‘the number one fresh link to Europe’ BradleyTransport have established a strong reputation right acrossthe continent. Their commitment to organic growth - based onexcellence in customer service and delivery times - meansthey have been able to build up a strong network of loyalcustomers.

Spotting a niche in the market for an Irish fresh produce linkto Europe, Bradley Transport ventured into the temperature-controlled logistics market in 2007 and now work in strategicpartnerships with fresh produce suppliers in the Netherlands,Belgium and France.

Peter Bradley, who runs Bradley Transport in conjunction

with his wife and co-director Aishling, joined the familybusiness aged just 18, the family business having beenstarted by his father Danny in 1995. Today, it boasts a €4.5million turnover, with staff of 30 and a fleet of two dozentrucks on the road

Despite the economic downturn, spiralling fuel increasesand decreasing imports, Peter has defied the odds and hasmanaged to grow the company exponentially year on year.He forecasts further growth in the region of 20% for thecurrent calendar year, saying his company is “constantlylooking for an opportunity and have realised that in therecession there are opportunities. Our clients will alwayscome first because their success is our success.”

Bradley Transport’s main office is located in Buncrana,County Donegal and they also have a number of bases in theUK and Holland. The Bradleys are concerned with what theircustomers want and strive at all times to provide solutions forall types of logistical situations, priding themselves ondelivering fast, professional services.

The impressive BradleyTransport Scania fleet

Page 38: Irish Trucker September 2012

Five years ago, a decision was made to switch into thetemperature-controlled logistics market when Peter andAishling identified a gap for a quality Irish haulier to collectfresh produce in Europe and deliver to wholesalersthroughout Ireland. Today, a state-of-the-art fleet of temperature-controlledvehicles embraces the latesttechnology, including sophisticatedtracking systems, to provide acomprehensive delivery service that issimply second to none.

Utilising speed, flexibility andreliability, Bradley Transportspecialises in delivering organicproduce such as meat, fruit, vegetables and flowers from producersin Europe fresh to the marketplace inIreland. In addition to this, they alsoprovide a dry freight system, includingfull loads between Ireland and Europe. The directors are constantly workingwith their partners to ensure theshortest supply chain link possiblebetween Europe and the end user hereat home.

Commenting on Bradley Transport’ssuccess in the Irish Logistics and

Transport Awards 2012, Peter notes: “This was our first yearto have entered, so we are pleased to have done so well. Itshows that we must be doing something right! We attendedthe awards night in the Burlington and we met some peopleand made a few friends.”

As for the business, the director is pleased to report thatthings are going well: “We’re doing alright. We purchased tennew Scanias there in March, having decided to increase andupdate the fleet to cope with existing work. We now have afleet of 24 trucks, all Scania, all bought from McElvaney’s inMonaghan. We’ve always had a very good experience withScania and I find that they do an excellent job.

“We’re taking part in a pilot programme for a new fuel-savinggearbox at the moment, so it will be interesting to see howthat works out.”

As well as foodstuffs, Bradley Transport also carry a lot ofcar parts between the UK and Ireland, brining main-dealerparts into Northern Ireland for all manufacturers except Fordand Volkswagen.

Between their various operations, they employ a crew of 30.How has such growth been possible during theserecessionary times?

“We’ve always done a good job and provided a good service– that’s the long and short of it. Everything is based aroundgiving a good customer service. We make sure we give anon-time delivery. If you do something well, then people areprepared to pay you to do it.

“Of course, there is pressure on rates all the time but wehave built up a good reputation for providing a quality service

“We provide bulk handling of any type of liquid, includingtransportation to landfill sites, and we also maintain treatmentplants in Meath, Kildare and Louth as well as looking aftersewage plants in various counties around the country andproviding a drain cleaning service.”

Having no background in thehaulage industry, it became intriguingas to why Raymond ended up in thissector and he picks up the story fromhere.

"I would have had a background infarming, but always had an interest inlorries. I worked in England for a fewyears where I was farming and when Imoved back home, I was bringingstraw in from England,” saidRaymond.

"I also started driving for Ewings andbefore long I decided to buy a lorrymyself and bring the straw over. Fromthere, the type of loads that I wascarrying diversified greatly and nowwe transport anything in the wide loadcategory generally.

Raymond chose a Scania as his first

truck and he has stuck with theSwedish make ever since as he findsthem the most reliable vehicle on theroad.

“I like the Scania, they are reliableand efficient and I can't complainabout the few that I've had. I do keepthem well maintained and try tochange them every few years.

“I have an older model and just lastyear I added another truck. There is ayoung lad working with me here - hegrew up with me and always wantedto drive a lorry so with the workloadincreasing, I decided to buy anotherone.”

Raymond admitted that there isplenty of legislation to be adhered towhen it comes to the transportation ofwide loads in every country.

“There are permits needed no matterwhere you go, especially to transportabnormal loads. Thankfully, I've thefull range needed to operate inIreland, UK and Europe.”

McFarland Transport can offer anexcellent service that can be tailoredto meet the customers' demands.

“We can provide scheduled transportservices collecting and delivering alltypes of goods and producethroughout Ireland and Europe. Weare a fully licensed Haulage Companyand our customers seem to be happywith the service that we provide.”

Raymond is pleased with thedirection that the business is headingin, but like all hauliers, he is feeling thepinch when it comes to the diesel bill.

“The price of diesel has really hit everyone hard. Ithas now surpassed everything else and it seems tobe rising all the time. It's a situation that we have todeal with until there is something done about theprices.

The rise in the cost of diesel is not the only problemthat Raymond has encountered in the industry as heexplains.

“Ferry prices have risen dramatically as well andwhen like us, you're spending a lot of time on the sea, then this is another cost that is hard to cope with.

“The ferry prices just seemed to go up overnight andthey have slipped in under the radar and there isnothing being done about it either, which is a shame.”

Nonetheless, Raymond is pleasedby the direction the company isheading in

“The business is still growing andwe're delighted with that. Our aim for2012 is to continue expanding andbe best in our class and try to bebetter than our competitors.”

Fifty years ofexcellence

August 2012 is a landmark month for R Barkley & Sons Ltd. as theBallymoney, County Antrim based general haulier will be celebrating 50years in business. Irish Trucker visited the company Headquarters anddiscovered that – with a fleet of 45 units, over one hundred trailers and 61employees – this stellar family business is going from strength to strength.

Established by Richard Barkley in August 1962, RBarkley & Sons has come a long, long way in half acentury. These days it is the sons from the company

title - namely Kenneth and Brian – who run the show. And theservice provided is as keen and professional as it has ever

been.A limited company since 2000, R Barkley & Sons has forged

an exceptional reputation for itself by providing anastonishing level of service to a wide range of clients. With anew depot opened in Stoke last year – their third in total – the

Page 50: Irish Trucker September 2012

company continues to progress in spite of the obviousdifficulties being inflicted on thetransport sector as a whole by record-high fuel prices.

Assessing the current lie of the land, director Kenneth Barkley admits thatspiralling and unsustainably-high fuelprices constitute the singlemost biggestchange affecting the industry – and, byextension, his business – in the pastdecade or so:

“There have been big changes, bigincreases in our costs and overheads,

especially fuel-wise. That’s the main thing affecting us at themoment. Fuel has never been so expensive and it’s placing astrain on everybody. This has been a big issue for the pastthree years or so and of course the recession also meanswe’re not as busy as we used to be.”

Having said that, R Barkley & Sons Ltd. has managed tothrive in the face of adversity, battening down the hatches androlling up their sleeves to actually grow and develop thebusiness in spite of the bad times. With depots in Manchesterand Stoke as well as the main base in Ballymoney, a fleet of45 vehicles and a staff of over 60 people, the company isprogressing at an impressive rate.

How has this been possible? No magic formula was used, according to Kenneth. To the contrary, it all boils down togood, honest hard work: “We’ve always provided a top-qualityservice and that is still the case today. We just work harder forless money. That’s the reality of how the haulage sector haschanged.”

Providing an unrivalled UK – Ireland service, R Barkley &Sons Ltd. runs a total of 100+ trailers. The service comprisesgeneral haulage – including a lot of machinery, plant andtractors – but they are moving more and more into groupage, thus the decision to open a third depot in Stoke.

In terms of fleet, DAF is the predominant name in thecompany yard, as Kenneth reveals: “They are pretty much allDAFs, apart from one Scania and one Volvo. We’ve alwaysoperated DAFs from the beginning. The man who firstbrought DAF to Ireland (J.M.R. Kirkpatrick.) was beside ushere in Ballymoney. We also have our own workshop and allof our maintenance work is done in-house.”

For decades now, R Barkley & Sons Ltd. has beenrenowned for its versatility. A wide range of specialist haulageservices is catered for, with warehousing also offered. Theimpressive modern, perfectly-maintained fleet of trucks andtrailers can tackle literally any job and, by embracing thelatest technology and techniques, the company is attuned tothe times that are in it, offering cutting-edge solutions usingstate-of-the-art equipment and dedicated, knowledgeableindustry professionals.

Fifty years on from its inception, R Barkley & Sons Ltd.stands tall as a striking success story. The next milestone isa century and, with such a great track record, there’s noreason to suggest they won’t get there! Looking to the future,Kenneth notes:

“We are confident we can keep moving forward. If you givea good service, there are still people who need work done. And we are here to provide a quality service. A lot of thesmaller operators have been forced out of business and thathas meant greater opportunities for us.

“Apart from the rising overheads, we are generally quitepleased with how things are going. We have a lot of long-termpartners who have been working with us for many years and

industry keeps changing and evolvingand you learn something every day.The nature of our work is such thateach day brings a fresh challenge andwe have to be ready to meet that.

“As long as we stay on top of things,I’m optimistic that we’ll be here foranother while anyway!”

As a family business first andforemost, R Barkley & Sons Ltd. has

always been able to provide a friendly, personal touch. This will remain thecase as the next generation willhopefully one day assume the reins. Atpresent, Kenneth has a son anddaughter working in the company whileBrian has two sons involved.

“If the fuel would only come down abit, it would make everything a loteasier,” Brian concludes. “Everything

else would come downwith it. At the moment it’spushing everything up –not just the cost ofrunning the trucks butalso boat rates etc.,which is another bigoverhead when you areproviding a UK – Irelandservice. The margin isdisappearing – buthopefully we’ll get somerespite soon.”

Stat of the artStatcroft Transport & Civil Engineering Ltd. has been providing a wide rangeof services to a host of satisfied customers for over two decades. Theslowdown in the construction sector has hit them hard but Statcroft havebattened down the hatches and continue to offer a quality, value-for-moneyservice. Irish Trucker popped into their Turloughmore depot for a chat withgeneral manager Darren O’Shaughnessy, a man who lined out for Galway inthe 2001 All-Ireland senior hurling final.

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS54

Athenry. A place revered in song and folklore. Thespiritual home of Galway hurling. No surprise then tofind that there’s a well-known stickman in the ranks of

local haulage firm Statcroft Transport & Civil Engineering Ltd.General manager Darren O’Shaughnessy was a Tribesmanfrom 2000 until 2003. During this time he collected a nationalhurling league medal, won a Railway Cup, and also lined outagainst Tipperary in the ’01 All-Ireland final.

But this is a trucking magazine, so we better talk about all

things transport. (Well, for now anyway - perhaps we’ll returnto the hurling later on!)…

John Morris is the MD of Statcroft Transport, havingestablished the company in 1990. Darren has been on thepayroll since 2003. Over the past 22 years, the company hasprovided a premium haulage / plant hire service to customersnationwide, forging a reputation as genuine leaders in theirchosen field of expertise.

As Darren confirms, a large percentage of Statcroft’s work is

Page 54: Irish Trucker September 2012

directly related to construction and civil engineering, a sectorwhich of course has been hit heavily by the economicdownturn: “A lot of the haulage we do would be fromexcavated sites – stone, topsoil, rubble and constructionmaterials. We also specialise in ‘muck away’ work and hold amulti-region waste permit in addition to the haulage licence, which allows us to operate anywhere in Ireland.”

Fleet-wise, Statcroft Transport & Civil Engineering Ltd.operates 35 units, all rigids, mostly Scania and Volvo. Interms of heavy plant on site, they also have a range ofexcavators varying from mini-diggers to 30-tonnes, Volvodump trucks, crushing plant and eight or nine concretebottles.

The nature of the work has changed with the times that arein it, as the general manager reveals: “During the good times,we did most of our own dig-outs and we got lost somewherein the madness, but we’ve since found that it’s better to go inby the hour.”

How much has the slowdown affected the business? “It’sbeen massive,” Darren admits. “When you have a fleet of 35you really have to have them out moving every day but that’snot possible anymore. It varies from day to day, but hopefullythere will be some sort of pick-up in the economy soon.

“Fortunately, we have always provided an excellent serviceand this means we’ve earned a very solid reputation. We arethe main contractors for Coshla Quarries here in Athenry,

hauling all their stone, and we’ve also been down in Corkworking for Michael Harrington as well as working for ScariffPlant Hire. On top of that, we’ve worked for all the major civilengineering companies like Sisk and Hegartys.

“We never really advertised our services. With the plant wehad and the good contacts we had with the quarries that kepteverything moving. We knew what we were doing and wewere flat out. There was plenty of work. We were the mainhauliers on the N6 from Galway to Ballinasloe, which was asix-year contract. Then, when we came off that, we got theCoshla Quarries contract and another one with CoffeysConstruction. But things are a lot quieter now and we are onthe look-out for something at the moment. We have a proventrack record, so we are confident something will come up.

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS 55

Page 55: Irish Trucker September 2012

“We have a very fresh fleet and they are all very well lookedafter by our own full-time mechanic. There has never beenany issue with any of our trucks. We have a state-of-the-arttracking system installed in them all and a transport managerwho makes sure the fleet is maintained in immaculatecondition.”

Diversifying into different areas has never been an option,Instead, Statcroft will concentrate on doing what they do best:“The fleet we have is made for construction and that’s whatwe’ll do. We have worked with all the big names inconstruction, all over Ireland, and we are available for worknationwide.”

Looking to the future, Darren continues: “The plan is to tryand keep the trucks moving and to increase our share of themarket. We want to become the No.1 go-to guys for builders. We want to provide a service to builders. We’ve always givena top-class service in the past and we will continue to do that. There aren’t too many fleets to rival ours anymore and wehave the machinery, the personnel and the know-how to keepany site going.

“We’ll provide an efficient service and hopefully we’ll be ableto keep all the lads in work. That’s really important. 90% ofthem would be local and we want to look after them. Also, wehave a policy of making sure we create employment in anyarea where we work. Say, for example, we have a contract inCork – we will bring two of our own men and take on six orseven local guys to provide local employment, as well aslocal knowledge, which is important.”

Okay, let’s return briefly to the hurling. As a formerintercounty hurler, Darren obviously has a great interest in theancient game and he points out that this goes right throughevery facet of Statcroft Transport:

“We have very strong links with the local GAA. We havesponsored some of the local teams and JohnMorris the MD is a keen GAA supporter. His fatherwould have been chairman of the TurloughmoreHurling Club and would have played on the historicteam that won six successive county SHCsbetween 1961 and ’66. During the summer, wealways try to take on some of the local hurlers aswell.”

Hopefully, they will be in a position to do so againin the coming months. Given the success StatcroftTransport & Civil Engineering Ltd. has enjoyed forover a score of years and the exceptional servicethey provide, one suspects they will find a way!

Headquartered in Cookstown, County Tyrone, the LCC Group is apioneering, innovative concern that operates at the very forefront of the fueldistribution industry here in Ireland. Irish Trucker met up with transportmanager Michael Moran to gain a further insight into this exceptional groupof companies, which continues to go from strength to strength.

Established in 1980 by managing director Michael

Loughran, the LCC (Lissan Coal Company) Group

remains family owned and managed and is a

customer focused organization, providing a range of services

spanning various energy sectors locally and worldwide.

LCC Ltd is the leading solid fuel importer and distributor in

Ireland, handling and delivering domestic and industrial coal

at all levels of the supply chain. The company has coal

washing and screening facilities in Belfast, Londonderry,

Gijon in Northern Spain, and Oxelosund in Sweden and

supply quality specialised product for cement production, the

manufacturing industry and power generation throughout

Page 58: Irish Trucker September 2012

Europe.Following the Business’ success in the importation and

distribution of Coal, they diversified into the Domestic OilIndustry in 1997. After years of continuous steady growth inboth Coal and oil, in 2005 LCC Ltd concluded a 50/50 JointVenture Agreement with StatoilHydro, ASA Norway buildingtheir own Oil Terminal (LSS Limited), located in Maydown, CoLondonderry.

LSS Ltd is to date the largest independent sea-fed oil importand distribution terminal in Ireland, most modern in Europewith a total storage capacity of 96,000 tonnes. Hence LCCLtd is now one of the leading Oil Importers and Distributors inIreland, supplying wholesale, agricultural, commercial andretail customers throughout the country including thecompany’s own retail forecourt brand Go.

Go – is a fresh, contemporary brand for the modernforecourt, under the umbrella of the LCC Group, they haveintroduced a host of innovative ideas – including unmannedforecourts - to improve and modernise the retail forecourtsector in Ireland.

Offering a complete forecourt package, Go provides acomprehensive range of products including unleaded petrol, ultra low sulphur diesel, gas oil, heating oil, small packlubricants, LPG and solid fuel. With a modern fleet of deliverytrucks and representatives available 24 / 7, Go guarantees astress-free and efficient forecourt experience.

As it’s a family-run business, the LCC Group can provide apersonal touch through every aspect of its operations – justone of the many reasons why they are so highly regardedacross the fuel, distribution and forecourt sectors throughoutthe island of Ireland and much further afield.

“Across the board, we operate a fleet of up to 60 vehicles,”transport manager Michael Moran notes. “Most of our fleetare MANs, with a smaller number of Volvo and Scania.”

Continuity and consistency are vital in any line of work and,to this end, the LCC Group has a tried and trusted partnershipin place to ensure that their vehicles are maintained in perfectrunning order. “We’ve been outsourcing all the mechanicalwork for the past 25 years to Eamonn McGuigan GarageServices. Eamonn has provided an excellent service fromDay One and we’re very happy with the service he providesus with. He looks after everything, with the exception ofwarranty work.”

In terms of catchment area, LCC boasts complete coverageof the Emerald Isle, asMichael confirms: “Wecover the length andbreadth of Ireland, fromDonegal to Kerry. As wellas Northern Ireland, wealso deliver all across thesouth. We import our coalfrom different countriesaround the world andthen sell it to wholesalers, shops, filling stations etc.

“The solid fuels comeinto the ports in Belfastand Derry, where ourprocessing plants locatedin Belfast, Derry andCookstown, prepare thefuels for distributionlocally and worldwide.

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS 59

Page 59: Irish Trucker September 2012

“We also have our own oil terminal inDerry, which is a joint-venture withStatoil in Norway. So we import our oilfrom Statoil in Norway and thendistribute it throughout Ireland as well.”

Considering the spiraling cost of fuelglobally, is this a particularly difficultbusiness to be in at present? “Peopleare still buying fuel because they needit. You can’t really manage without it.

From a solid fuel point of view, much ofit is purchased for domestic use andthe weather very much determinesdemand, whereas the demand forpetrol and diesel is generally steady allyear around often peaking in thesummertime. The result is that we arekept busy all year around.”

Supply deals secured with the likes ofthe National Health Service, NI

Councils, Civil Service, Translink andNorthern Ireland Railways give anindication of the high esteem in whichthe LCC Group is held.

Michael has been with Lissan CoalCompany since 1989. Reflecting onthose days gone by, he recalls: “Istarted out driving a 4x2 F7 Volvo. When I started, the fleet consisted ofthe F7 Volvo, one old MAN and two

Best Wishes To N6 Concession Ltd,

Page 68: Irish Trucker September 2012

N6 Concession Ltd. wasestablished in 2007 as part of ajoint venture to construct,

maintain and operate the section of theM6 motorway from Ballinasloe toGalway. The parties involved in N6 areGlobalvia, Sacyr and PJ Hegarty.

All the shareholders are representedon the board of directors and there areindividuals seconded from theshareholder companies on the seniormanagement team. The seniormanagement team is headed byGeneral Manager Gareth Gallagher.

Overseeing first of all the successfulconstruction of the N6 motorway andnow charged with operating the route, including management of the toll plazathereon, N6 Concession has as itsbase an administration building besidethe toll plaza at Cappataggle,Ballinasloe, County Galway. This iswhere we caught up with KevinMcGrath, General Manager ofOperations, who explained what themain objective of the company is interms of delivering customersatisfaction:

“The main aim of N6 Concession atthe time of construction was to deliverthe motorway infrastructure between

Ballinasloe to Galway on time. Nowthat the project has entered theoperations phase, the aim is tomaintain the network in accordancewith the contract requirements and tothe standard that has been achieved onsimilar projects that the parentcompanies are involved in. Customersatisfaction on such a scheme is ofparamount importance and N6constantly strives to ensure that allqueries are answered in a timelyfashion.”

Obviously, the schedule is a hecticone all year around with so much trafficusing the motorway, but is there a peakperiod for the business? “From thepoint of view of maintenance, the winterseason is the busiest, particularlyduring the harsh winters that have beenendured over the past few years.Summer time also brings its challengeswith more traffic on the road resulting inmore breakdowns and minor incidentsthat need to be reacted to.”

Between the toll plaza and themaintenance department, a total of 50people are employed by N6Concession Ltd. – certainly a significantnumber in the times that are in it (or,indeed, in any times!).

Kevin points out that the staffmembers are instrumental in theongoing success of the business: “As itis a service that is provided, staff arethe key element to the success of thebusiness. Without a flexible workforce, the business would not be able to meetthe demands that a 24 / 7 / 365 workingday / year brings.”

As General Manager of Operations.Kevin’s role involves liaising with theshareholders to ensure that parentcompany interests are addressed andensuring the quality systems that areapplied throughout the group areimplemented on this scheme. Anotheraspect of the role involves reporting tothe National Roads Authority on anongoing basis to ensure that any issuesthat are raised by them and others areaddressed and that the requirements ofthe Operations Contract and thatAnnual Performance targets are met.

Looking to the future - and specificallythe company’s hopes / plans for theforthcoming calendar year - he reveals:“Hopes for 2012 are for growth in theeconomy, which should lead toincreased activity on the roads. Plansare to continue to maintain theinfrastructure in the manner that we

The N6 motorway project comprises a53km stretch of motorway stretchingCh 2+450 on the Galway city side ofGlenascaul Grade Separated Junction(Interchange 19) to Ch 55+340 justwest of the Tulrush Grade SeparatedJunction (Interchange 14) inBallinasloe.

In terms of fleet, with Health & Safetybeing the most critical issue whenworking on high-speed motorways, N6Operations procured two purpose-builttrucks - a Scania P230DB 4x2 and aMercedes Actros 4x2 - incorporating atraffic management body, lighting boardand truck-mounted crash cushion.

Health & Safety regulations dictatethat any operations which requireoperatives to work on the hard shoulder(e.g. safety barrier repair, litter picking, grass cutting etc.) are carried out underthe protection of a crash cushionvehicle. The crash cushion will absorbthe impact of any errant vehicle, thusprotecting the operatives on theground. The traffic management bodiesare utilised when erecting static laneclosures. The body of the truck isdesigned to carry cones and stands, with a well in the body to allow anoperative stand close to ground leveland drop out cones onto the pavement.

N6 Operations has a contractrequirement to complete wintermaintenance treatment to the entirenetwork within two hours of issuesarising on the road. To this end, N6Concession procured four multi-purpose trucks. It is vital that eachvehicle is versatile so that it can beused all year round.

A Scania P340 CB 8x4 32-tonnetipper truck is fitted with a 5-tonne, 12-metre high Palfinger crane equipped

with manbasket and grab bucket. Thecrane allows for the removal ofobstructions from the motorway, whilstthe manbasket facilitatesaccess to street lighting andsignage for maintenance.During the winter, it carries a10m3 demountable salt gritterand snow plough as required.

A Scania P320 CB 6x4 26-tonne body swap truck carriesa traffic management body inthe summer months forspraying and TM duties. In thewinter, the body is swapped fora 12m3 salt gritter and snowplough as required.

Meanwhile, the company’ssecond Scania P320 CB 6x426-tonne truck is equipped witha fixed 12m3 salt gritter withthe possibility of converting to abody swap vehicle if requiredlater in the contract.

An Isuzu 7.5 NPR 7.5-tonne tippertruck is used all year round as ageneral work horse. A 2m3 salt grittercan be attached during periods ofexceptional cold weather or to coverany downtime in the larger gritters.

And an Isuzu crew cab, 5.2lt withbespoke traffic management body andrear lighting board, was procured inFebruary 2012. This vehicle is ideal forsetting out TM on junctions due to itssmaller size. It is also used extensivelyfor spraying operations where amotorised sprayer is carried on the flatbed as an operative stands in the conewell spraying herbicide to the requiredareas at low speeds.

The fleet is maintained in primecondition at all times and all funding forthe maintenance and operation of theroad is generated from toll revenues.

Indeed, as Donal reveals, the linkbetween Frank Keane and Volkswagengoes back quite a long way: “When Mr.Keane first went into business, the veryfirst car he sold was a 1953Volkswagen Beetle, so he has a longassociation with VW. Since then, hehas built up a strong association withGerman vehicles and Germanengineering.

commercial vehicle showroom, with space for 120 vehiclesoutside. We also have a purpose-built aftersales facilityadjacent to the showroom, which has a 3.5 tonne ramp andcan cater for all passenger cars and commercial vehicles. The workshop has passed all the relevant VW standardsand is fully-approved and endorsed by the manufacturer.

“With the opening of Frank Keane Volkswagen, we arecreating 50 new jobs in west Dublin, which is an importantboost for the local economy.”

Donal is more than pleased with how the business hasperformed since its inception, noting: “We have been in linewith our plans to date. Considering that we had missed thevital order-take period at the end of 2011, we’ve done verywell. There has been no Volkswagen representation in thispart of Dublin for a number of years and we have greatplans for West Dublin.

“On the commercial vehicles front, we’ve had a verysatisfactory year to date. We’ve exceeded both our ownexpectations and those of the manufacturer. We are closeto many industrial estates, residential areas and are only avery short distance to the city centre city, while the M50 isonly 2 minutes away. That means we attract a lot businessfrom all parts of the country.

“Volkswagen commercials are second to none. They arevastly superior to the direct competition. It’s a very versatilerange with no limits to what you can get as you can haveany of the vehicles in the range modified to your exactrequirements, whether you’re a builder who needs to carryheavy weights or a hotelier who needs to transportrefrigerated produce.

“We also have a dedicated commercial vehicle specialisthere at Frank Keane Volkswagen – Ger Colwell, who hasover 20 years’ experience in the market. And VolkswagenBank are offering 4.9% on new Volkswagen Commercials –they are open for business with a very high approval rate.”

Looking to the future, Donal concludes on a fittinglypositive note: “Things are going to be a lot different nextyear as Volkswagen are restructuring their current Networkand we will be one of only three dealers remaining in Dublin. We are very optimistic about the future and we are oncourse with Volkswagen’s plan to become the No.1passenger vehicle dealer in Ireland. “Commercial vehiclesare also going very well and our ambition is to continue togrow the business and to increase our market share.”

MidLink M7/M8 Limited carry out theoperation and maintenance obligationson the project road for Celtic RoadsGroup during the thirty year term of the

McMahon speaks to Irish Trucker abouttheir role in maintaining this stretch ofroad.

“We are responsible for the supply, installation and operation of the tollcollection system for the project, a 14lane open tolling system, incorporatingmanual, automatic coin, and electronictoll collection payments,” revealedGreg.

“We are also responsible for allroutine maintenance on the project, including routine inspection of theassets, response to emergencyincidents, landscape maintenance, traffic management, severe weatherresponse and winter maintenance.

The motorway cut up to 45 minutes offthe Dublin to Cork journey at peaktimes and provided a motorway/dualcarriageway link between Dublin andCork, of which 218km or 91% ismotorway. It is also a significantsection of the M7 motorway linkbetween Dublin and Limerick.

“We are responsible for the full 41kmsof road, while I also oversee the day today running of SouthLink N25, theOperations and MaintenanceContractor on behalf of CRG on theN25 Waterford bypass, so my time isdivided between the two.”

along the route. We have a stock pile ofsalt, which is in the region of 1500tonnes, which is more than we need, but it is better to be safe than sorrygoing by recent winters.”

MidLink has a maintenance yard justbehind the toll plaza, which allows allequipment to be on the road in quicktime if needed. They have the plant andequipment to deal with all eventualitiesand an emergency response units inplace.

“Precautionary work would be carriedout on a regular basis particularlyduring the winter months when theroads are more susceptible to badweather. We would also work veryclosely with all the emergency services.

“Winter would definitely be our busiesttime regards maintenance and eachworker is highly trained in their field ofexpertise. We place a great emphasison developing the skills of the staff withmaintenance personnel spending up to20 days a year training and upgradingtheir skills.”

MidLink carries out 95% of the workneeded on the route themselves, withonly the likes of specialist structuralwork and inspections beingsubcontracted.

Greg confirms that their emphasis isto provide a top quality service to thethousands of motorists that passthrough the toll on a daily basis.

“Our aim to keep the route in the bestpossible condition and making journeytimes for motorists as smooth aspossible. Our employees are trainedand encouraged to be friendly and

efficient at their jobs and we feel thatthe feedback we receive would supportour objective.”

There are a number of ways to pay forusing the toll; paying cash is probablythe most popular, but motorists areurged to use the electronic tollcollection service.

This allows motorists to pay their tollfare electronically thereby saving timeat the toll plaza. Electronic tollcollection uses a small electronic tagwhich is placed in the vehicle and isdetected each time the vehicle passesthrough the plaza. The toll is thendebited to the customer's account.Electronic toll collection is available inall lanes at the toll plaza.

“Interoperability” of electronic tollcollection was established in 2007 and

enables the road user to pay the tollfare at any toll plaza in the Republic byusing an electronic tag supplied by anyof the service providers in the Republic. The Portlaoise Motorway toll plaza willaccept payment by valid electronic tagissued by any of the service providersin the Republic.

Hassle freebreakdownsHassle freebreakdownsBreakdowns are one of the worst scenarios faced by hauliers on a dailybasis as they are accompanied by downtime, the scourge of the haulageindustry. When a truck or van are sitting on the side of the road, it is notmaking money and to hauliers that is the cardinal sin.

There are times too when accidents occur and alongwith breakdowns, these can be very stressful times forthe owners/drivers. However, such strain can be

eased by the dedicated few who concentrate on the recoveryof heavy and light commercials. There are many recoveryservices throughout the country, but the majority concentrateon cars and small vans, leaving hauliers struggling to findanyone equipped to meet their requirements.

One company that works solely for the haulage industry isJimmy Halligan Recovery & Salvage, which is based inRathfarnham, Co Dublin and in this month's edition of IrishTrucker; we profile this business and speak to company MDJimmy Halligan.

Specialising in the recovery of heavy and light commercials,Jimmy offers a unique nationwide service to a large customerbase and he revealed that his knowledge of the industry was

Page 86: Irish Trucker September 2012

a major help when he set up the business in 2005.“I just felt that the opening was there. I've been involved in

the haulage industry and the repair side of things for manydecades and this seemed like the logical next step. It was abig decision and a big step, but I knew a good few people inthe industry and that was a big help starting off.

“Aside from the recovery work, I also supply second handgear boxes, which are taken from crashed trucks that I buyin.”

A full 24-hour service is provided, seven days of the week,365 days per year. A professional, prompt and affordableservice is provided at all times and Jimmy Halligan Recoveryis renowned for getting the job done on time every time. Asthe company's stellar reputation spreads, he is benefitingfrom more and more business through word of mouth.

Simply put, this business is now established as one of thepremier recovery / breakdown operators in Leinster. Acomprehensive service is provided under one roof and usingthe latest state-of-the-art equipment means customers can beback on the road in double-quick time.

“I'm available 24 hours a day to recover anything from atruck to a light commercial. I can recover a vehicle fromliterally anywhere - the roadside, out of a bog or wherever itmight be stranded. The equipment is very versatile and forthat reason the work can be quite varied.

Jimmy may think that it is a 'small operation' but his largecustomer base suggests otherwise, the majority of whichcome from the public sector and the MD admits that therelocation is key to the success they have sustained over theyears.

“From Rathfarnham here, I canbe on most of the motorways inminutes and through the roadnetwork travelling times havebeen greatly reduced, so I canbe anywhere in the country in amatter of hours.”

Jimmy is pleased to report thathe is reasonably busy at themoment. “We're tipping away.Things have picked up in thelast six months or so, which isencouraging. From '06 up to '09,it was booming. Things havebeen a lot quieter since, butwe're still kept ticking over. Thiswork can be seasonable, but inall honesty even though manymight think that the winter is

As one of the UK’s largest bed and bedroom furnituresolution providers, Starplan sells direct to thecustomer from its network of factory stores. At

Starplan, you can choose from one of the widest ranges ofbedroom furniture in the UK - from free-standing bedrooms toluxurious fitted bedrooms, with a fantastic choice of colours, styles and budgets to suit everyone.

The company’s focus is on giving exceptional service fromdesign and manufacturer through to delivery and installation. All employees are professionally trained and the level ofcustomer care afforded to the consumer from Starplan issimply second to none.

For the best-quality fitted children’s bedrooms, modernbedrooms and traditional bedrooms, sliding wardrobes; free-standing furniture from Solo, Solsbury and Allure; and Vonobeds – Starplan should be your first-choice one-stop shop.

Founder / managing director Mervyn Wilson opened his firstfurniture showroom 40 years ago, in 1972. Determined tooffer top-quality bedroom furniture and beds at good valueprices and to give customers the highest possible level ofservice, he opened the first Starplan factory in Dungannon,County Tyrone in 1978. employing ten staff members. At last,he was able to guarantee quality, delivery and prices in linewith his original vision!

As word spread and the company developed, the factorywas expended with more showrooms opening around thecountry. Mervyn wasn’t content to simply follow fashion andtrends – he wanted to set them. As such, Starplan hasbecome a pioneering force in the beds and bedroom furnituremanufacturing / delivery / installation sector.

Today, with a 150,000 sq. ft. purpose-built factory boastingstate-of-the-art European machinery and a workforce of up to200 people, Starplan is one of the leading direct-salesbedroom furniture companies delivering to over 15,000homes in the UK every year. However, it remains very mucha family business which will always put the customer first.

Transport manager Declan Rafferty explains: “Mervynliterally started selling furniture out of a car and trailer before

opening his first premises outside Dungannon and starting tomanufacture. In the ‘seventies, he built a factory in anindustrial estate and that served us until, in 2002, he openedthe existing state-of-the-art facility close to Dungannon, whichserves as our manufacturing base and also has a showroombuilt in.

“This is our flagship premises. All the manufacturing takesplace here and the furniture is then shipped to Englandthrough McNeill Transport in Ballyclare.”

Declan has been with the company since 1984, working ina number of different departments before joining the transportsection of the operation in 1992. As transport manager, hecurrently oversees a fleet of twelve vehicles out of the HQ,twelve more in the Birmingham depot and five in theManchester (Warrington) depot.

The decision to install Navman Wireless vehicle trackingtechnology was taken in 2010 as part of Starplan’s ongoingcommitment to operating an effective fleet in order toguarantee an exceptional level of customer service.

As Starplan can make up to 110 deliveries per day acrossthe UK, the tracking system helps them keep everything onschedule, resulting in better fleet management, improvedteamwork, increased productivity and greater fuel efficiency.

“We can see where all the vehicles are at any given timewith just the push of a button and we have also benefited froma 25% reduction in insurance costs as well as the obvioussavings in terms of diesel usage,” Declan notes. “While thiswas an expensive system to install, we have always looked atthe long-term benefits of technology and we expect it to startpaying for itself within the next three or four years.”

Starplan runs a fresh fleet of Ivecos, all of which are keptwithin a four-year contract. “They’re all purchased from NITrucks in Belfast, with a full contract maintenance package,”confirms Declan. “We find this to be the most economicalarrangement and we have five new units coming in at the endof the month.”

The collapse of the Republic of Ireland market saw Starplanswitch its focus more and more to the UK mainland, where

“It would be wrong to say therecession hasn’t affected us because atthe end of the day a bedroom unit is aluxury item, but we have held our ownand the product is still selling well. Ouraim was always to produce furniturethat was competitively-priced but overthe years the quality of Starplan’sfurniture has also improvedsubstantially, to the level where ourfurniture is now as good as anybodyelse’s – but aimed to suit individualpockets. We also offer keen financingpackages, which can take a lot of thepressure off the buyer.”

With Starplan, customers can takeadvantage of 0% interest-free options. As Starplan manufacture everythingthey sell and rigorously control thequality of each item and its installationin your home – with a buying directpolicy resulting in factory direct prices –quality and value are assured. Allmaterials are sourced from reputable, ethical suppliers and Starplanmaintains demanding quality controlstandards in its factories.

Starplan fitted wardrobe exactly as itwill appear in their room.

With over a dozen Starplanshowrooms throughout the UK,prospective customers can get up closeand personal with the entire range ofover fifty display bedrooms, eachbeautifully decorated and waiting totransform the purchaser’s home.

Starplan now owns Vono Beds - oneof the oldest and most respected bedmanufacturers in the UK. After sellingVono beds for over a decade, Starplantook the opportunity to purchase Vono– who have been manufacturing top-quality beds since 1896 - when it cameto the market in 1982, knowing thatVono stood for the same things asStarplan - quality, choice and value.

Rather than making thousands ofbeds a week, Starplan concentrates onmaking a smaller amount of bespokebeds, which are individually-tailored tosuit the needs of customers and cancome with a warranty of up to fiveyears.

Standing on very solid financialfooting, Starplan is still very much afamily-run company, founder MervynWilson being joined in the business byhis two sons and one daughter.

As for the future of the distribution endof the operation, Declan Raffertyconcludes: “We have to keep theoverheads down. The biggest factor isobviously the cost of diesel. Eventhough it has come back a small bit, diesel remains very expensive. I waslooking back at some old receipts theother day and I saw that in 2006 wewere paying 64p for a litre of diesel andit’s now £1.12 plus VAT.

“We could spend up to £4,000 a weekon fuel in Northern Ireland alone, sothat’s the biggest overhead in terms oftransport. We have to keep it undercontrol and we’re constantly looking atways of increasing economy andproviding the customer with the best-value service possible.”

The collapse of the Republic of Ireland market saw Starplanswitch its focus more and more to the UK mainland, where

they have increased their number ofshowrooms from three to seven.

Thanks to modern computer designsoftware, customers can see the latest

In Northern Ireland, an estimated 50,000 vehicles reachthe end of their lives every year. These have to be treatedand disposed of properly. End of life vehicles have the

potential to release harmful substances into the environmentif they are not stored, treated and disposed of is a competentand conscientious manner.

End of life vehicles are classed as hazardous waste untilthey have been fully treated and de-polluted. As a result ofconcerns about the environmental and economic impacts ofwaste vehicles, the European Union adopted the End of LifeVehicles (ELV) Directive (2000/52/EC) in October 2000.

The ELV Directive includes the following provisions: thatEnd of Life vehicles must only be treated at permittedtreatment facilities which meet strict environmental standards;that producers (i.e. vehicle manufacturers and importers) areheld responsible for the costs of ELV take-back andtreatment; that producers and other economic operators (thelikes of car dismantlers and shredders) are to establishadequate systems for the take-back and collection of ELVs;that the last owner of a vehicle must be able to return theirvehicle into collection systems free of charge from January2007 onwards; that the last owner of a vehicle must be issuedwith a Certificate of Destruction for their vehicle once it hasbeen professionally and legally disposed of; and that specificrecycling and recovery targets must be met (85% recoverywith a minimum of 80% recycling from 2006 and 95%recovery with a minimum of 85% recycling from 2015).

If a vehicle is ready for the breaker’s yard, then it must betaken to an Authorised Treatment Facility as scrap vehiclesare hazardous waste. It can only be transported by authorisedhauliers who hold the necessary hazardous waste permits.Under no circumstances should scrap vehicles be given tounlicensed, illegal sites.

The legal requirements of End of Life Vehicle legislationdictate that all waste vehicles must be de-polluted at anAuthorised Treatment Facility (ATF), that ATFs must issue aCertificate of Destruction to the last owner of the vehiclebeing disposed of and that vehicle manufacturers areresponsible for ensuring there is an adequate network ofATFs. Customers must be offered free take-back.

In the UK, the ELV Directive is implemented through ELVregulations issued in 2003 and 2005. The 2003 regulationsdeal with treatment standards, site licensing and restrictingthe use of hazardous substances in new vehicles while the2005 regulations cover recycling targets and free take-backfor ELVs.

Complementary to these ELV regulations, in NorthernIreland, the licensing of Authorised Treatment Facilities andthe site and operating standards with which they must complyis contained in the Waste Management Licensing Regulations(Northern Ireland) 2003.

Authorised Treatment Facilities (ATFs) have a huge role toplay in protecting the environment and ensuring that thisparticular type of hazardous waste is disposed of / recycledproperly and in full accordance with all local and Europe-widelegislation.

ELVs must only be treated at permitted treatment facilitieswhich meet strict environmental standards, AKA AuthorisedTreatment Facilities. In Northern Ireland, ATFs are approvedand regulated by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency(NIEA). An up to date public register of ATFs is available atATF Register NI.

A guidance document commissioned by Department forEnvironment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and theDepartment of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform(BERR) describes the procedures for de-pollution of an ELV

so that it is no longer hazardous waste.Furthermore, an application form to beaccepted as an ATF can be obtained bycontacting NIEA on 028 9056 9358 orby emailing [email protected]

Once a facility licence has beengranted, Northern Ireland EnvironmentAgency monitors the licensed ATFs toensure that they are treating ELVscorrectly. NIEA also investigates andtakes enforcement action against

operators of illegal sites. These sitesthreaten the environment andundermine legitimate operators. It isimperative that the motor trade andmembers of the public do not provideELVs to illegal operators. One cancheck the ATF public register toensure that waste vehicles are onlygiven to legal operators. Anybodywith information on illegal ELV sitesshould contact the NIEAEnvironmental Crime team on 0289056 9453 or [email protected]

As stated above, one of therequirements of the ELV regulationsis that the last owner of a wastevehicle (passenger cars or light goodvehicles) that’s de-polluted ordismantled is issued with aCertificate of Destruction (CoD). ACoD can only be issued by an ATF.The CoD ensures that the vehicle istreated and disposed of properly and

that it is de-registered with theNorthern Ireland Driver & VehicleAgency (DVA).

In summary, it is absolutelyimperative that anyone disposing of avehicle in Northern Ireland only usesGovernment-approved End of Lifetreatment facilities. These AuthorisedTreatment Facility operators arelocated throughout the province and

are fully endorsed by Alex Attwood, theMinister of the Environment on theNorthern Ireland Executive.

The professional, fully-approvednetwork of ATFs – which comply withELV and environmental permittingregulations - will ensure that yourvehicle is disposed of in a responsibleand lawful manner and that allnecessary paperwork is completed inaccordance with existing legislation.

There’s only one way to go.

People in Ireland have become more price conscious since the economicrecession took its vice like grip on the nation and the search for qualitygoods at competitive prices has gone to a new level.

B&R pride themselves on ensuringan efficient delivery service

B&R continue todeliver

The business wasestablished in 2010

Page 105: Irish Trucker September 2012

The haulage industry has been hit harder than mostand the rising cost of fuel and the decrease of rateshave meant that cash flows have become tighter.

Hauliers are now holding on to their vehicles for longer thanthey used to be and this means there is more of an emphasison maintenance.

A major part of maintaining vehicles is replacing parts, whichis something that occurs on a regular basis. Truck owners willnow go to great lengths to source parts at a reasonable price, but for hauliers in the south east of the country, they needlook no further than B&R TranSpares, which is based in NewRoss, Co Wexford.

This flourishing business wasestablished in November, 2010 bybrothers Brian and Richie Minogue. Many may have frowned upon the lads'decision to set up their own business atthe height of a recession, but as Brianexplains to this month's edition of IrishTrucker, the company has grownconsiderably since they opened.

“The decision to set up our ownbusiness at the time came about afterthe company that both Richie andmyself had worked for many yearsclosed down and they were in the sameline of business that we specialise innow,” revealed Brian.

“Both of us were out on the road delivering parts, so wewere dealing with the customers on a daily basis, so whenIrelands largest parts distributor closed down, we asked thecustomers would they be interested in dealing with us and wegot a great response from that, so we had a good corecustomer base to work on from the very start.”

Brian stated that indeed the business had grownconsiderably since the first opened their doors in New Ross.“Our customer base has doubled from last year and we hadthe same increase the year before. We would be the onlytruck parts dealer in the South East covering the full range oftruck, bus & trailer parts to our customers based in Wexford,Kilkenny, Waterford, Carlow and Tipperary.

“We would supply parts for trucks, vans, buses and trailers.I suppose you could say we are unique in the service that weprovide. About 60% of our parts are sourced outside thecountry but we try to buy in the Republic providing we get thebest value for our customers.

“People are a lot more aware of the price nowadays and wedo our best to be very competitive on that level and I think wehave succeeded to do that. We stock a huge range of parts

GWC leads the wayThe process of recycling scrap metal is quite a complex procedure which iscarried out by a number of companies around the country; includingGreaney Waste Collection situated on the Cork - Limerick border.

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS106

Con has worked hard toestablish the business

Located at Broadford, Co Limerick, Greaney WasteCollection Services has been trading for the past sixyears and is a family business.

The company was established as a scrap metal removalfirm by Con Greaney who is ably assisted in the day to dayrunning of the business by his daughter Aoife, who speaksto Irish Trucker about the success of the business.

Times have changed dramatically since Con first becameinvolved in recycling and these days legislation plays a

major part in the secure running of the business. GWCspecialise in the removal of all scrap metals, which are thensent to recycling. From farm machinery to cars, vans andtrucks, right down batteries cables and sheds, once there ismetal involved GWC are interested.

Con worked for a local haulage company for 18 years andafter being let go in 2010 he concentrated in putting all histime into Greaney Waste collection which he had beenoperating on a part time basis while working mon-fri with the

Page 111: Irish Trucker September 2012

haulage company. “Being let go from ajob after so long is not easy but it wasthe best thing that happened as I wasover whelmed by the demand therewas for scrap collection at that time. Ihad a lot of friends and contacts madethrough my previous job and thankfullyall these have supported me in my fulltime business venture. “

“Since new legislation under thewaste management act wasintroduced, it is essential that weadhere to all legal requirements toundertake this activity. We have wastecollections permits to undertake thecollection and transfer of waste metalsthroughout Cork city & county, Kerrycounty, Clare county and Limerick city& county, anyone undertaking thisactivity is legally obliged to have a validcollection permit," revealed Aoife.

All scrap is brought to either Hegartymetals or United metals which areauthorized treatment facilities for Endof Life Vehicles (ELV's). “Bothcompanies have been very good toCon down through the years, helpinghim in any way possible.” Under EULegislation for End of Life Vehicles, anymember of the public can bring theirvehicle to their facility for appropriaterecycling, this process is known asdepollution, a process where allhazardous wastes .i.e. fuels, oilsbattery and tyres are removed free ofcharge. The vehicles are recycled in anenvironmentally friendly manner.

“The metal is weighed and we will payaccordingly. The beauty is that ratherthan charge companies to take awaytheir unwanted scrap metal, we actuallypay them! The good thing about themarket is that these metals have aparticular value and we will pay that.”

Greaney Waste Collection Servicesalso offer a collection service to itsmany customers and members of thepublic. The scrap metal that is collectedcomes from all over the permittedcounties and is sourced from wastecompanies, farmers, factories and cardismantlers to name just a few.“Farmers particularly enjoy this serviceas it assists them in cleaning up theirlands for the REPS Scheme,” addedAoife.

She revealed that the company isideally located on the Cork-Limerickborder, as the type of business theirinvolved means spending a lot of timeon the road.

“There are so many different types ofscrap metal, it is vital that the sortingprocess is done properly andstrategically to maximize added valueto our product”.

Greaney waste collection can alsocollect a number of non metal materialsincluding WEEE, glass, plastic, concrete, bricks, tiles to name a few.

Even though the company hasdeveloped steadily over the years, managing director Con Greaney stillprovides a personal service to

customers, consideringthemselves part of a two-waypartnership. Con supplies hiscustomers with a top-classservice; this is why he can counta huge customer base after justsix years in business.

Another service that thecompany now provides is theremoval of waste sludge andGreaney's have a tanker thatcaters for this sort of work, whilethey also have the relevantpermits to ensure that it is doneby the book.

"We operate modern vehicleswhich are designed to load andtransport. One of our vehicle is arigid truck fitted with a grabloading crane which can liftmost farm yard scrap and largervans and trucks. Our other truckis a flat body for the smallerloads. We can make any of ourtrucks available at short notice.Recovery is also available andthe tanker is the latest additionto the fleet."
