    March 31, 2016:

Three young men on Spring Break, witness a car launch into the Laguna MadreBay and pull the driver from the water to safety, having no regard for their ownwell being.

On March 16th, 2016, around 8:00 p.m., South Padre Island Police received a911 call reporting a car had driven into the Laguna Madre, near the 1700 block ofLaguna Blvd. South Padre Island Police arrived on scene shortly after andwitnessed three males pulling a female out of the water. The young men, identified as 23 y/o Anthony Lazard, 23 y/o Jack Spreen and 19 y/o Joe Doran,

had been sitting on their 3rd floor balcony when they saw a black car drive pastthem and into the bay. They ran down, jumped into the water and swam to thecar. The three noticed a female inside the car, kicking the windshield in an effortto escape the car as water filled up the passenger area. Spreen said they tried tobreak the driver’s side window, without success. However, they were able tobreak a hole in the damaged windshield that enabled them to pull the femaledriver out of the car.

The witnessing officer, Michael Schiltz, credits their actions to saving her life.“That car completely sank in less than a minute and if not for them jumping into

the water and pulling the driver out, she would most certainly have drowned.”
