Home AV Connected Devices?

Smartgrid? Industrial Uses?

Low Power Mesh Network?

All of them, of course IoT has been around for years! Billions of devices since ~2010

IoT @ CES 2015

• IoT was on every floor, in every hall

Thermostat Control

IoT Ecosystem Problem

• Most ‘solutions’ require their own app or proprietary ecosystem

• Switching App is not a good user experience

To avoid returns/unhappy users, there must be a great out of box experience

Heterogeneous Open IoT

• The only way to overcome these problems is to:

1. Assume a heterogeneous world with open access

• No central ‘owner’ of the IoT world, assume a many ‘homed’ world

2. Cross-layer collaboration between manufacturers

• Apps thru Comms to Privacy/Security

3. Make it easy for users to setup and use

• Reliably with a system assembled over time

IoT Open Source Ecosystem

• Open Source can often be an easier way to get interoperability quickly

Summary

• IoT is not new but has exploded into many new areas

– Result of low power and low cost CPUs and wireless

• Heterogeneity and Interoperability are key, otherwise the current IoT push will stay niche

– Please use one of the many standards and/or open source projects rather than proprietary

• Many problems remain unsolved for massive market success

– Lots of opportunities for companies and engineers everywhere
