Just seven miles long and three miles wide,Paxos encapsulates the magical beauty andvariety of the Ionian: over 30 shelteredbeaches on the east coast, dramatic cliffs onthe west, olive trees and tall pines inland,

surrounded by the clearestcrystal waters, and fringed

with caves, grottoesand unpopulated

islands.

About half of the island’s population of 3,000live in the three villages of Gaios, Loggos andLakka, and help create that special sense ofserenity, sociability and relaxation thatcharacterises Paxos.

Take a boat trip to the satellite island ofAntipaxos and for a short while you canexperience a real Robinson Crusoe moment,as you step onto one of the many unspoiltand deserted beaches, and reflect on whatmakes life so precious.

GAIOS

Gaios is the main village of Paxos.Rare among Greek islands, the littleflagstoned square with its church isright on the water. The village is amaze of narrow streets lined with anassortment of little shops, tavernasand bars. A host of attractive baysand coves lie nearby. Boats, toreach the sandy beaches ofAntipaxos, depart from the squareevery morning.

MAGAZIA

Magazia is the island’s small, central village for a cluster ofsecluded hamlets amongst the olivegroves close to the west coast. Theone café bar and taverna retain atraditional island character; thebakery produces delicious breadand assorted pastries and thegrocery store is small but wellstocked. The nearby Church of theApostles overlooks the dramaticwest coast cliffs, which are turnedpink by the setting sun.

LOGGOS

The smallest and most attractivefishing village on Paxos, Loggosremains unspoilt. Thirty little housescluster around the old platia which isright on the sea. Silver and greenolive groves cover the hillssurrounding the village. Tavernasserve good food and small shopsprovide a wide range of groceries.Waterfront café bars offer delightfulvantage points for people and boatwatching. Good bathing frombeaches and rocks is within fiveminutes’ walk.

LAKKA

The little port of Lakka with itsalmost circular harbour and crystalclear sea, framed by green andsilver olive trees, is an artist’sdelight.

Narrow streets, picturesquegardens, numerous small shops, tavernas, bars and friendly peoplegive Lakka a special character of itsown. Lakka’s wide bay of clear, turquoise waters contains a stretchof olive-fringed beaches, whichshelve to sand.

Set on a cliff edge with infinite views, perhaps EaglesNest would have been more apt. Olive grovessurround the property and the private terracedgardens have an intimate feel.

Across the sea one can see Antipaxos and on a clearday even Lefkas appears on the horizon. Sunsetswith Antipaxos in the foreground are unforgettable.

This is a quiet place, with the winds and the waves tokeep you company and the silence disturbed only bythe song of the cicadas.

Gaios is only a 10 minute drive as are nearbybeaches. A boat can be hired and moored in Gaios.

Photographs of the villa, which is in the final stages ofconstruction, will be available in January 2018.

Governor's House is exactly what it sounds like: backin the early 18th century, this was the officialresidence of the British Governor in charge of theIonian Islands. It is every bit as grand as you'dexpect, with thick stone walls that keep it delightfullycool even in the height of summer. Outside, agenerous pool terrace looks out over ancient silverolive trees, allowing glimpses of the shining seabeyond, and a large dining table hides under a shadycanopy – a dream spot for a big family lunch.

Away from the villa, the east coast of the island isyours to explore. The sandy beaches of KakiLangada and Kloni Gouli are just over a kilometreaway, and the car journey to pretty Gaios takes justfive minutes. In fact, most of this tiny island is at yourfingertips – even the drive north to Lakka will take just15 minutes.

Looking for a historic villa stay on a cosy, homelyscale? That's exactly what you get from picturesqueVilla Doria. It's one of a cluster of renovated 18th-century houses in the tiny hamlet of Geromonachos, and retains its original thick stone walls – a real boonin the summer heat, as they keep the small propertybeautifully cool. Despite the expansiveviews there is a feeling of real privacy here, and it is afantastic spot from which to enjoy a Mediterraneansunset.

While Villa Doria itself is compact, the separate poolarea makes it easy to spend a whole day here.Leisurely local walks are a pleasure too though, and afew minutes' drive will bring you to the east coastbeaches of Kaki Langada and Kloni Gouli, or to theshops and waterfront restaurants of Gaios.

With single-storey accommodation, Villa Doria is agreat choice for small families.

There's a lot to love about The Olive Press. Itslocation balances a secluded spot in the unspoiltsouth with easy access to the pretty port of Gaios. And its accommodation is packed with character –this is a centuries-old working building, andincorporates traditional stone walls and parts of theoriginal olive-pressing floor. Romantic in every sense,it's the perfect choice for couples who want to relaxinto the slow, peaceful rhythms of Paxos life.

By day, kick back on the sunny terrace, take a dip inthe pool or head out on foot to explore the area onthe old donkey tracks and quiet country lanes. Botheast and west coasts are within easy reach – Gaios is15 minutes on foot or five minutes by car, and a shortwalk will bring you to the beautiful beach at Avlaki orthe Trypitos Arch, a striking and remote rockformation.

In the evening, an open-plan living area allows you tocook and chill out together, and an enclosed, beautifully lit patio creates the perfect environment forromantic al fresco meals. Alternatively, try out one ofthe two excellent tavernas just a short stroll away.

The steep walk up to Kapassa House is your firstsign that you are heading somewhere special. Thescent of lemon and olive is thick in the air as you walkalong an ancient donkey path through groves oftrees. It’s atmospheric, leafy and utterly secluded.

Kapassa House is situated in the tiny hamlet ofDendiatika and offers you a total escape from themodern world. The elegant home has contemporary, comfortable furnishings, but feels rooted in tradition, and the lack of WiFi on the property cements thefeeling of a real retreat.

Relax on the stone terrace, surrounded by bloomingflower pots, and pause to enjoy the scenery.Stretching out in front of you is a view of the littleharbour village of Loggos, the Ionian Sea and therolling hills of the Greek mainland. And the refreshingprivate pool, shaded walks and romantic location allmean that you may never want to leave.

When you do need to return to something like thereal world, Loggos is 15 minutes away on foot, whileFikia beach is a 25-minute walk from the villa.

ANT IPAXOSThe epitome of seclusion, with only 50 local inhabitants, Antipaxos provides

glorious sandy beaches and crystal waters. With only four tavernas, the

ethos here is quality rather than quantity.

With an area of a mere five squarekilometres and a population of about 50people, Antipaxos clearly belongs to a worlddistinct and apart from our usual daily lives. It may have in its history one of the greatestnaval battles between the Greek Citystates of Corinth and Corfu in 432BC buttoday it prefers to offer those who relishnature’s simplicity an unique escape tosome of the best soft sand beaches andclearest water in the Mediterranean.
