1992AAAS Philip Hauge

Abelson PrizeThe AAAS Philip Hauge Abelson Prize of $2,500, established by theAAAS Board of Directors in 1985, is awarded annually either to:* a public servant, in recognition of sustained exceptional contri-butions to advancing science, or

* a scientist whose career has been distinguished both for scientificachievement and for other notable services to the scientific com-munity.

AAAS members are invited to submit nominations now for the 1992prize, to be awarded at the 1993 Annual Meeting in Boston, MA. Eachnomination must be seconded by at least two other AAAS members.

Nominations should be typed and should include the following infor-mation: nominee's typed name, institutional affiliation and title, ad-dress, and brief biographical resume (please do not send lengthypublications lists); statement of justification for nomination; and names, identification, and signatures of the three or more AAAS membersponsors.

Nominations should be submitted to Amy Crumpton, AAAS Directoratefor Science and Policy Programs, 1333 H Street, N.W., Washington,DC 20005, for receipt by 1 August 1992.

1993 AAAS Scientific Freedomand Responsibility Award

To Encourage Scientists and Engineers to Reflect Upon theSocial Implications of their Professional Actions

The AAAS Scientific Freedom and Responsibility Award, estab-lished by the AAAS Board of Directors in 1980, is awardedannually to scientists and engineers who have:

* acted to protect the public's health, safety, or welfare; or

* focused public attention on important potential impacts ofscience and technology on society by their responsibleparticipation in public policy debates; or

* established important new precedents in carrying out thesocial responsibilities or in defending the professional free-doms of scientists and engineers.

You are invited to submit nominations now for the 1993 award,to be presented at the 1993 AAAS Annual Meeting in Boston,MA. A recipient of the award is selected by a panel of six judges. The deadline for receipt of entries is 15 July 1992.Requests for nomination forms and more information should besent to: Amy Crumpton, Directorate for Science and PolicyPrograms, AAAS, 1333 H Street, NW, Washington, DC 20005.

Scientific WordProcessing Software

Scientific Word is a word process-ing program that produces type-set quality formulas, equations, and documents. The program rec-ognizes mathematical symbolsand automatically italicizes, sizes, spaces, and positions symbols forthe user. There is no need to learnunfamiliar codes to enter math-ematics. The user simply clicksthe mouse on symbols in the on-screen panels and they appear inthe document. The symbols canalso be entered with keyboardshortcuts. The program requires acomputer with Microsoft Win-dows 3.0 or higher and a minimumof two megabytes memory. TCISoftware Research. Circle 90.

equipment. It has a magnetic fieldmeasurement range of 0 to 10milligauss. A switch allows theuser to detect either low-fre-quency (60 Hz) or high-frequency(16 to 40 Hz) EMI. Low-fre-quency EMI is typical of the am-bient field produced by powerlines and fluorescent lights, whilehigh-frequency EMI typically ra-diates from video display tubes.World Precision Instruments.Circle 91.

MicrovolumeBiodialyser

The Sialomed Biodialyser offersa fast approach to dialysis of bio-logical samples from 10 to 1500gl. Made of inert Teflon, it isavailable for volumes of 10, 50,100, 200, 500, 1000, and 1500 gl,with precut ultrafiltration mem-brane sizes including 0.1, 0.5, 1,2, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, and 300 K.There is no overflow or cross-con-tamination of samples, and sam-ple loss is minimal. It can be usedfor sample preparations for high-performance liquid chromatogra-phy, electrophoresis, equilibriumdialysis, immunoblotting, bufferexchange, enzyme assay, remov-al of excess radiolabel, removal ofsalts before derivatization of sug-ars, protein binding assay, remov-al of primer in polymerase chainreactions, and other applications.Sialomed. Endonuclease EliminatesInterfering Nucleic AcidsBenzonase is a genetically engi-neered endonuclease that de-grades all forms of DNA andRNA for rapid isolation and pu-rification of proteins, peptides, carbohydrates, and lipids. Be-cause of its nonspecific, activenature, small amounts (1 to 10mg) of Benzonase are sufficient todegrade the interfering nucleicacids into oligonucleotides in the3- to 5-bp range, greatly simpli-fying protein purification pro-cesses. Benzonase assures a lowerviscosity of the sample matrix;consequently, nucleic acid frag-ments can be easily removed bydialysis. EM Science. Circle 96.
