− Ageing population in line with national average – by 2021 23.1% will be 65
Introduction to One NorthEast
− One NorthEast is the Regional Development Agency − for the North East of England tasked with the mission to:
‘Transform the North East of England through sustainable economic development’
− To achieve this vision, One NorthEast has the following objectives:
-Accelerate economic development and regeneration -Promote business growth and efficiency, boost
investment and increase competitiveness -Generate thousands of new jobs -Develop the work skills of the people living here to
meet the needs of a changing economy
− One NorthEast employs approximately 300 people with an annual budget of £300m
One NorthEast International Investment & Aftercare Team
− One NorthEast Investment & Aftercare Team responsible for delivery of International Activity
− Mission− To create a network of strong global relationships
that deliver increased activity in;− Foreign Direct Investment− Technology Transfer− Venture Capital Investment− R&D and Knowledge Collaboration
Method− Pro-active promotion through One North East’s
overseas office network, UK Trade & Investment and British Embassy
− In 2007/08 One NorthEast − attracted 69 (up from 57) FDI projects − creating 1,572 new jobs and − safeguarding 2,062 jobs

Indian Investment in North East England
− North East England currently has 13 Indian firms, employing over 1,500 staff and contributing to a combined total capital value at point of investment of £40m
− 70% of FDI investments made through M&A activity − 55% of Indian investment since 2003 has undergone and completed
expansion projects− One NorthEast has had direct presence in the Indian market since January
2007
Case Study: Tech Mahindra
− Tech Mahindra, majority stake owned by Mahindra & Mahindra, announced software and BPO service centre investment in S. Tyneside. Tech Mahindra received £1.9m grant funding from One NorthEast and will create 523 new jobs
Indian Investment in North East England
Case Study: Shasun Pharma Solutions Ltd
− Shasun acquired Rhodia Pharma Solutions Ltd’s pharmaceutical custom synthesis business in 2006 in a deal worth £18.5m. Shasun currently employs 258 staff at its Cramlington site and has been in negotiations with One NorthEast on potential re-investment projects
Case Study: Paramount Cables
− New Delhi-based Paramount Cables acquired AEI Cables in 2007 in a deal worth £13m. One NorthEast provided £1m GBI which secured the employment of the 314 staff at Birtley
