How life could be better?
We run 23 focus groups
Co-Researcher with intellectual disability
University Co-Researcher Supporter
We recorded the focus groups
When we got the audio files from all the focus groups…
Analyse the data
1. University co-researchers
Wrote word by word what people said
Pointed at 19 important things that people had said
2. We all got together and talked about the 19 important things
University Co-Researcher Supporter
Co-Researcher with intellectual disability
3. We said that there were 8 very important things
4. We asked the question: How could life be better?
We said that life could be better becoming…
a paid
employee
a self advocate a house owner,
flatmate
a good communicator
a respected citizen
a money manager
a partner in a relationship
a person who enjoys leisure
time
We suggested: Create a presentation to talk about these findings to advocacy groups, government
officials, and service agencies throughout Ireland.
5. We asked the question: What could we do next?
6. Four groups of co-researchers worked on presentations

Each group picked:
The Galway Research into Action Group – Staff interviews (self-advocacy)
Why did we choose self-advocacy? Why did we do the interviews? What does the video tell?
Who are people working for? Choosing staff – We are in control
We now use the DVD regularly for staff training
The Galway Research into Action Group
Supporters: Know their stories – give real life
examples Give direction – broader context,
policy and services Facilitate reflective thought People learning from each other Making the DVD brought everybody’s
ideas together and that’s become a way of sharing it with others
7. We did a report and a DVD with all the presentations
