PURPOSE OF J-1 EXCHANGE VISITOR PROGRAM

“The Exchange Visitor Program fosters global understanding through educational and cultural exchanges.  All exchange visitors are expected to return to their home country upon completion of their program in order to share their exchange experiences.”

J-1 STUDENT INTERN

Basic Requirements for the internship:

Must expose the foreign student to American techniques, methodologies, and technology and expands upon the student intern's existing knowledge and skills.

Must fulfill the student's educational objectives for his or her current degree program.

 Reinforces the student’s ongoing academic course of study. Must be full-time (minimum 32 hours a week). The student intern is primarily in the United States to engage in

a student internship program rather than to engage in employment or provide services to an employer.

The internship tasks may consist of no more than 20% clerical work.

HOST DEPARTMENT RESPONSIBILITIES• Verify that the foreign student’s English is

proficient enough to function on a day-to-day basis.

• Accept the foreign student into its internship program.

• Complete and sign all requisite documents.• Secure placement of student intern. • Provide access to appropriate labs, buildings,

and library privileges.• Monitor the intern’s progress and complete

the evaluation forms.

FUNDING/FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Minimum funding requirements for all J Exchange Visitors (EV):

$1600/month for J-1 exchange visitor $550/month for Spouse $300/month for each child

Inform IFSS of any changes before E.V. arrives

Submit complete application to IFSS

Complete and sign all requisite documents

Plan visit at TAMU at least two months in advance

Complete Check-in and Provide orientation

Mail DS-2019 and pre-arrival information packet to J-1 visitor

Review documentation and Process DS-2019 form

Receive complete J-1 application
