Welcome to

InviteWelcome to our latest issue of Invite Magazine. It’s been a busy month in Saint John leading up to the New Year with some exciting events. We hope you had as much fun as we did getting out to last month’s events. We had a great time at the Coors Light Mystery Mansion at Studio, and when rock legends Helix graced the stage of Tonic. The Saint John Gallery Hop added some culture to our fine city, and our Saint John Sea Dogs continued to blow off the roof of Harbour Station. And these are just a few of the many events! January looks to be just as exciting with Matt Minglewood, Blue Rodeo, Sean Paul, Ashley MacIsaac, and more hitting stages throughout the city.

In the New Year, Invite continues to bring you the best that Saint John has to offer. Enjoy 2010 with a show at some great live venues, including The Blue Olive, Peppers pub, O’learys, Bow Ties, Urban Deli, Cougars, and the 3mile. As always, Harbour Station and Imperial Theatre continue to bring international talent to the port city.

If music isn’t your thing, hit Lily Lake for some ice skating or stop in to see the folks at Day Tripping and rent some snow shoes, cross country skies or try some Nordic walking. If it gets too cold for outdoor ventures, then stop by Legends @ the 3mile and swing the clubs on their 9-hole golf simulator or a game of cards at their electronic poker tables. Finish your day with a stroll uptown and check out a gallery or two. Visit the New Brunswick Museum – it’s always a great way to spend an afternoon and it’s within walking distance of some of the best restaurants around.

That should be enough to keep everyone busy for another month.

Big Tide Brewing Co.

Big Tide Brewing Co.’s thirsty fans will be able to enjoy a warming ‘Cup o’Kindness’ come mid January as the tap will bring forth the latest creation from the brew team.

As alluded to in the premier issue of Invite Magazine, Big Tide has brewed up a Ploughman Poet Scotch Ale. Chris Welch, the other half of BT’s brew team, indicates that January is an appropriate time to bring the full flavoured scotch ale to the taps.

The ‘Ploughman Poet’ is a reference to the recently voted “World’s Greatest Scot”, Robbie

Burns. Burns penned Auld Langs Syne, a tune traditionally sung at midnight on New Year’s Eve to say farewell to the old (Auld) year and ring in the new. Later in the month on January 25th, Scottish descendents across the globe celebrate the life and poetry of Scotland’s favorite son. We’re hoping that the introduction of the Ploughman Poet Scotch Ale will serve as a warm up to the annual Burns’ suppers for the local Scotsmen, and tweak the interest of the Scottish at heart as well.

Sir Walter Scott described Robbie Burns as a “strong and robust” individual. In this tradition, our Ploughman Poet Scotch Ale has been designed and brewed to yield a similar description from all who come in to try a pint. The brew has been formulated in the tradition of a Strong Scotch Ale, with a warming alcohol effect to balance the subtle smoky character and residual malt sweetness of the style.

These flavour characteristics will make Ploughman Poet a perfect companion to the very flavourful Big Tide Burger or any of the other grilled meat selections on the menu. Ploughman should also do very well with a steaming bowl of the Beer and Cheddar soup and an order of Perogies, or do a double plough where the Ploughman Poet Scotch Ale meets the Scotch eggs of Mr. Plows Lunch.

So if you’re needing a warm up for Robbie Burns’ day or looking for something fresh, different and flavourful to whet your whistle with, come on into the Big Tide Brewing Co. and raise a glass to the Ploughman Poet.

Have you ever looked into your closet

and realized that most of the coats you

own are not suitable for that special

winter evening on the town?

Looking fashionable and stylish in January does not mean that you have to wear a bulky parka or

winter coat that makes you feel like the Michelin Man. Luckily, coat designers share these sentiments and have made efforts to offer stylish, yet warm, winter coat options to you.

Designers and manufacturers have come a long way in making winter fashionable. From Betsey Johnson with her unique down filled coat to soft angora wool coats from Mallia – your choices are varied. But when it comes to warmth with style, the indisputable winner is shearling. Once you wear one, you’ll wonder why you waited so long to have one.

Technically speaking, shearling is sheepskin. But it’s the Spanish Merino sheepskins that are light-weight and of exceptional quality. Shearling can handle anything from blizzards to freezing rain without overwhelming you with volume of material. It is a unique material because of its natural warmth, suppleness, longevity and polished good looks. In addition, it lends itself beautifully to the fur and luxury outerwear market because of its high status as a quality, handcrafted article.

It is important to keep in mind that the hide is a natural product and not a synthetic one, resulting in natural imperfections that add to the unique appeal of the garment. Such characteristics can be considered nature’s signature that the product is genuine.

Available in many colors and styles, shearling is a very versatile choice that can be beautifully accessorized.

For additional information about shearling, please visit us at Frank’s Furs and Fashions. We have a large selection of shearling outerwear, and it will be our pleasure to serve you.

The Wooden Sky, JANuARy 28Trying to nail down the different genres explored by the Wooden Sky isn’t an easy task. When pressed, the band tosses out tags like “folk rock”, but the words don’t hint at the nuances in their sound. Since 2003, the Toronto collective has been pushing the limits of folk and country, adding pieces of outside influence and slowly growing their own unique sonic aesthetic. It’s all led them to If I Don’t Come Home You’ll Know I’m Gone, a massive undertaking that sweeps through rock and roll subgenres with the deftness of the Allman Brothers, the songwriting focus of Wilco, and the experimental sonic cacophony of the Flaming Lips. It’s a career-defining record, grown and built organically over months spent living, writing, and recording in cramped apartments between Toronto and Montreal.

Ultimately, the Wooden Sky is the sound of collective will; a group of individuals coming together to forge something bigger. It’s a sound that started in a garage in downtown Toronto and found its way into the hands one of the most respected studios and producers in North America. With a new record and new friends to help them play it, the Wooden Sky are poised to push “folk rock” into something new, exciting, and earnest.

The Jimmy Swift Band, JANuARy 30The Jimmy Swift Band’s (JSB) sound is a fusion of the best in both rock and electronic music. The result is the creation of something different than anything else – a style uniquely JSB. Their live show is a frenzy of sweat, blood, dancing, and thrashing – all to hypnotic rhythms and an unrelenting energy that is both addictive and unstoppable.

The JSB is currently touring across Canada in support of their newly released Live concert DVD titled, JSB Live At The Marquee. Filmed at the Marquee Club in Halifax, this DVD is a definitive snap shot of what the JSB is all about (see the sample inside the video section above).

The Jimmy Swift Band is truly an anomaly within the Canadian music industry. They are unsigned, yet have made a living playing music. Theirs is a success story made possible by the actions of their fans and one clearly judged on the strength of their music alone. On stage, JSB’s energy has always been focused on the audience – on turning a Saturday night concert into an unforgettable experience. You will likely never see or hear anything like the Jimmy Swift Band anywhere else, and you will never walk away from another show feeling like you did the last time you saw the JSB.

Tips for Preparing your Home for Sale

Whether you are preparing to sell your home now or in the future, consider the following tips to help make your home more attractive to potential buyers.

Clean and ReorganizeClean your home from top to bottom and make sure all appliances are spotless. Reorganize the closets and pack away some of your belongings. Storage room is a priority for buyers and a full closet does a poor job of showcasing the amount of storage room available. If you’re using a spare room for storage, pack away the clutter and ensure that the space is properly furnished.

Furnish Empty Properties and RoomsPeople buy homes, not houses. Empty rooms make it hard for buyers to get a good sense of the space. Large rooms look cavernous and small rooms look even smaller when empty. Oddly shaped rooms make it especially hard for buyers to visualize how to arrange the room. Staging your empty property with the right furniture is key to ensuring that buyers will be able to visualize living in the space.

Brighten and LightenRooms that are filled with light are always appealing. Open blinds and make sure your windows are sparkling clean. If there are no windows in the room, make sure the lighting is adequate and keep all the lights on when showing the property, even during the day.

A fresh coat of neutral coloured paint goes a long way to brighten up a space.

Spark Your Buyer’s ImaginationTry setting the dinner table for a formal dinner, lighting the fireplace on a cold day, and adding some fresh flowers to your décor. Creating the proper atmosphere helps buyers envision themselves living in your home.

Improve SecurityHousehold security is a sought-after feature in homes, and simple measures such as adding window locks and motion-sensing lights outside can boost the attractiveness of your property. In densely populated urban areas, simple additions such as blinds and shutters are good additions to provide privacy.

Keep Your Neighbourhood in Mind When RenovatingActual returns on renovations depend not only on the renovations themselves, but also on how your home compares to your neigh-bours’. If your home is already above market value for your neigh-bourhood, your renovation may not yield a higher return. Buyers looking at moderately priced homes won’t be able to pay a premium for luxury finishes. Ask your REALTOR® to give you an assessment of homes in your area before embarking on costly renovations.

Showcasing the talent of Saint John’s local musicians and bands.PLAYThis dosage of Medicine won’t hurt a bit... I guarantee!Hey Guys, how does it feel to have the first year under your belt as a band?Dean: Year and a half actually. And I’m bored! (Laughing)Scott: I think it feels pretty good. I think everyone would agree to that.Dan: It’s certainly nice now that we’ve got a feel for each other ... The first few shows it was really about getting to know each other in the performance context and it was a bit scary at times. Now, things are running really smoothly...it feels like a band now.Do you ever get tired of lugging the gear around? It’s a big part of the show.Dan: That’s my favourite part!Dean: (shaking his head with a smile) Danny’s only got a microphone and a stand... But really it’s all good.Scott: Really, it just comes with the territory of what we do.Were you sceptical about putting a project like this together now?Warren: Having such a good past with the music scene...we were anticipating this project to be nice and easy in terms of putting it together. Three of us had played in bands together before...We knew we would just do the best we could.Dean: We haven’t had a bad gig yet. We’ve been able to play to receptive crowds. We’ve been lucky to play at great

venues. KV Billiards has been great to us – we’ve had great gigs there...It’s my own desire to have all of our friends come out religiously to the shows and enjoy the night with us. We want to become known for being spot on musically and being enter-taining and sounding good.Is there one person in the band that calls the shots?Scott: Everyone has their strengths and that’s what everyone brings to the show.Dean: We each have a certain tech abilities and when we’re putting the show together we each do what we do best. What other bands have you guys played with?Dean: I played in my first band in grade 10 and it really never stopped from there. I played in ForePlay with Steve MacQueen.Warren: Well, Roadhouse was the first for me. Started playing in bars at 18.Scott: I was playing with a band out [West]...called Rush Hour.Dan: I sang in my truck ‘til I was 37. (Laughing)Any plans on some original tunes? What would a Bigg Medicine original sound like?Dean: There’d be a guitar in it for sure (laughing). It would be pretty funky rock, with straight ahead groove. I guess along the lines of The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Bad Lands. It would be something with a heavy groove and lots of rock.

My Personal Dose of Bigg Medicineby Dennis Hunt

I met with Danny McLellan, Dean Roberts, Scott McRae and Warren Beatteay at their rehearsal space.

We sat down and talked about the time, energy, and hard work that goes into putting on the travelling medicine show that they do so well. These are some of the finest guys you can sit and talk with. They have had substantial experience providing live music with the bands that they have been either a part of or involved with in a technical support role.

John T. McMillan Casino & Dance

If you are looking for an exciting atmosphere and an engaging place to spend a mid-winter’s night, look no further than the John T. McMillan Foundation’s 4th Annual Casino & Dance.

This year the event will be held at the Saint John Trade and Convention Centre (Market Square), on January 30th from 7:00 pm until 1:00 am. The event offers something for everyone – from a dance and live music to a high-roller table and lucrative contests. What’s more, the money raised at this event goes towards a worthy cause.

The John T. McMillan Foundation is a charitable foundation that raises money in the memory of John McMillan, a man who determinedly fought and lost a battle with acute leukemia four years ago. The foundation focuses the funds it raises in three areas: Families Helping Families, which financially supports patients with life-threatening diseases and their families, Elevate Education, which awards a $1,000 scholarship to a focussed and enthusiastic Simonds High School student, and Cornering the Cure, which continues to strive to find a cure for cancer.

The cost for admission is $50.00 per person, and you definitely get your money’s worth. A ticket includes entry into an elimination draw for a $2,500 travel package, entrance to the dance which begins at 10:00 pm with live music by Halifax’s Big Fish, and of course entry to the casino, including $20,000 in casino bucks! In addition, appetizers will be served from 8:00 to 9:00 pm, a 50/50 draw will be held, a high roller table will be available, and the Bruce Holder group will provide music during the casino from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Your ticket also includes a $50.00 discount for any trailer or RV rental from any Leisure Family RV Center, with locations in Saint John, Fredericton, and Moncton.

Get your tickets early as there are only 650 tickets available, and this is always a sold-out event. Tickets can be purchased at the Saint John Leisure Family RV Centre, located at 929 Hampton Road. If you would like more information, contact Jeff MacDonald at [email protected], or for tickets call Judy Connell at Leisure Family RV Centre at 849-3363. Don’t miss out on this outstanding event for an outstanding cause!
