1DAYS OF THE CULTURALAND HISTORICAL HERITAGE

The Municipality of Isperih is the second largest munici-pality in the area of Razgrad occupying 405 square kil-ometers. It is bordered by the municipalities of Razgrad, Zavet, Samuil, Dulovo, Glavnitsa and Kaolinovo. It consist of 24 populated locations – one town and 23 villages. The earliest traces of life in the area of Isperih are from the Bronze Age. The Municipality of Isperih has a great cul-tural and historical heritage. The attractive sights and the rich cultural events calendar of the area support the pres-entation and the popularization of its cultural heritage.

They have been carried out yearly since 2002 in the Mu-nicipality of Isperih starting at the end of September and lasting about two weeks. Within these days numerous events are carried out – Maize Fair, art exhibitions, days of open doors for visitations of historical locations on the territory of the municipality, demonstrations of na-tional handicrafts and re-creation of national customs, exhibition “Archeological Summer”, scientific confer-ence “Autumn museum lectures Sboryanovo – from the discovery of the artefact to the exhibition glass” with participation of well-known historians and museum per-sonnel from the country and abroad.

The visitors and the participants in it can taste the hominy prepared before them and enjoy the rich Culinary exhibition of maize products, to put into practice their skills for crafting of maize leaves products, to look into the past by different re-creations of events and to partici-pate in organized retro games. Race for swift-ness and dexterity, games for fastest peeling of maize, games for construction and placement of a corn cob tower and many other games challenge the participants to give the best of themselves.

MAIZE FAIR Since 2006 the event has been carried out in the night of May 17. The Museum Night offers a rich program with participation of many per-formers and is presented in three locations of the Historical Museum of Isperih – Ethnograph-ic House, Art gallery and Museum exposition. Different folklore rituals and customs are re-created in the Ethnographic House. The guests may try the prepared hot hominy while watch-ing the performance of the amateur groups of the municipality. The Art Gallery gives shelter to the lovers of visual art with its various at-tractive exhibitions. Under the title “Color and Form” many children participate in doing paint-ing works, often helped by elders. Within the program the volunteers have the choice to visit the museum exposition until midnight, too.

As part of the Days of cultural and histori-cal heritage of the municipality, since 2005 the Historical Museum has been organizing a yearly Maize Fair at the end of October.

TRADITIONAL MEETING-FAIR OF THE BALKAN FOLKLORE

TRADITIONAL EXCURSION FOLLOWING THE PATH OF TANYO VOIVODEEvery year form May 30 to June 2 the traditional excursion “Following the steps of Tanyo Voivode’s rebel detach-ment” is organized. It is the second detachment of the Bulgarian emigra-tion in Romania organized following the idea of Hristo Botev. The detach-ment stepped on the river bank near Tutracan in Pozharevo village on May 17, 1876. Due to the lack of roman-tic aspect the detachment of Tanyo Voivode remained in the shadow of the unknown for almost 120 years. As early as 1996, due to the 30-year work of the connoisseur-historian Boris Iliev, who was born in Sveshtari village, the

The event has been carried out since 1991 on the meadow of the area “Sboryanovo” and it typically occurs the last Saturday before May 24. The tradi-tional Meeting-Fair “Demir Baba Khanqah” is car-ried out in the sacred area for the Muslims near Is-perih. According to a legend the Alian saint Demir Baba saved the local population from drought by discovering a water spring. The program of the fair includes folklore groups from different parts of the country and from the Republic of Turkey.

The start of the excursion is on May 30 from the monument of Tanyo Voivode in the town of Tutrakan. Events related to the detachment’s stepping on the Danube River bank and taking of oath are re-created near Pozharevo village. The participants in the excursion arrive in Isperih in the late afternoon of May 30 facing many spectators, hearing march and patriotic songs and observing the laying of wreaths before the monu-ments in the town.

8 NATIONALILINDENSKI FAIR

9 AUTUMN FAIR Conducted in the first half of September. It comes in a combination with horse racings and wrestling.

Its conduct is documented to begin at the end of the First World War. In present day the fair is carried out in the central part of the archeo-logical preserve Sboryanovo on July 20 (Ilinden according to the new calendar) or the closest weekend date. As early as 1906 Demir Baba Khanqah was renamed to Dimitrovo village. It kept this name for half of a century. Muslims and Christians came here and honored it as their sanctuary. In the years following the First World War the worshippers of Demir Baba Khanqah increased in number. People sought hope and consolation in the widespread mis-ery. In the 20’s of 20th century they started to organize a fair on August 2 (Ilinden accord-ing to the old calendar). The brass music from Sveshtari was played at the fair. Between 1939 and 1945 the fair was prohibited once (in 1943).

The fair continued during the communist pe-riod. In 1951 the Dimitrovo Khanqah was re-named to Sboryanovo. In 1957 the buildings of the village were demolished as the village was included in the water reservoir zone. Beyond this area remained only the yard of the Khanqah with the spring “Pette prasta”. A pathway started from the spring and led to the meadows where the fair began on Il-inden. In the 60’s the fair was still vital and had many visitors. Not only people from the nearby villages but also visitors from faraway places in Bulgaria came to visit it. Regular guests were the national theater troupes of Razgrad and Haskovo performing their con-certs and plays here.

After 1964 the Ilindenski Fair was not conducted for 26 years until 1990 when the cultural and educational as-sociation “Rodno Ludogorie” renewed it. After 1998 there was another pause until July 20, 2008 when founders of association “Sboryanovo” officially re-vived the fair. The fair normally starts with a sacred liturgy in some of the nearby churches and moves to the Sboryanovo area where a rite of sanc-tified water is performed and offerings (boiled mutton) honoring St. Iliya are sanctified. In the last years an attrac-tion at the fair was the presence of the culinary specialist Uti Bachvarov who

prepared a special kebab for the boiled mutton distributed among the guests. Invariably many amateur groups and performers from the Ludogorie and Dobrudja area join the fair, as well as popular folklore performers well-known for their patriotism and love of their country. The event is visited on average by 2-3 thousand people from the whole country.

The municipality of Popovo is located in the north-eastern part of Repub-lic of Bulgaria. Nowadays it is part of the Targovishte region. The total area of the municipality is 833,398 square meters and it is bordered by the municipalities of Targovishte, Antonovo, Strajitsa, Byala, Dve Mogili, Opaka, Tsar Kaloyan, Razgrad and Loznitsa. It comprises 35 populated locations – 34 locations are villages and only the administrative center Popovo is a town. For the first time Popovo was indicated in an Ottoman tax register in 1524 under the name of village Evrenos, Kulfal Vakah or Pop Alagyoz (greenish-brown-eyed priest). According to an old legend the town was established by a priest and his big family that settled near the river on a meadow encircled by a century-old deciduous forest. With many efforts he uprooted the forest and created many fields. He became well-known for his hard work. Fellow-countryman from the near and far away areas started to seek him for Christian rituals and some of them built houses near his home. That is how Popkyoi (the priest’s village), which is the nowadays Popovo, emerged. The cultural events calendar of Popovo includes: Balkan Movie Festival for cameraman mastership “The Golden Eye”; national festival for alternative cinema “Mini-film”; regional review of library amateur works “Festival of Arts”; day of amateur artistic work; Kapanski fair “Zdrav Koren – Jiv Duh” in Sadina village; Belomorski Fair in Svetlen village; Fair of Humor – “Who laughs never gets old” in Palamarza village; municipal review of the mountain and touristic song “Song for Bulgaria, the mountain and the tourism” in Dolets village; anniversaries of national libraries; cultural days in May, national fairs in separate locations; feast of Popovo; exhibitions, etc.

2 MEETING OF THE PARTICIPANTS IN THE NATIONAL EXCURSION “FOLLOWING THE STEPS OF TANYO VOIVODE’S DETACHMENT” The event takes place every year on June 1 and June 2. It is attend-ed by a national review of march and combatant songs on the cen-tral square in front of the municipality building on June 1. On June 2 one of the battles of the Tanyo Voivode’s detachment in the area “Pripeka” near Svetlen village is re-created. In the area “Kerchana” near Aprilovo village, where the detachment found its death, a cer-emonial laying of wreaths before the monument of Tanyo Voivode is organized together with a thematic performance. The area “Ker-chana” (“Kerchan Bair”) is the culmination point and the end of the national excursion. The hosts of the event are the Municipality of Popovo, the mayor’s office and library in Aprilovo village. The Tanyo Voivode’s detachment is the second detachment of Bulgarian emi-grants organized following the idea of Hristo Botev. The detachment disembarks on the shore of Tutrakan near Pozharevo village on May 17, 1876. The event is the last echo of the April fires in 1876 and led to the self-sacrifice of the two detachments - the detachment of Hristo Botev and the detachment of Tanyo Stoyanov.

The event is carried in May in the center of culture with the support of the Municipality of Popovo SFDB, NFC - Ministry of Culture. The most prominent and newest Bulgarian films together with their camera-men, as well as young cameramen and university stu-dents with their newest works participate in the event.

The event takes place in September with the support of the mayor’s office of Slavyanovo village, National Library “Lyuba Velich - 1905” in Slavyanovo village. The festival is carried out in the National Library “Lyuba Velich - 1905” in Slavyanovo village.

The event takes place in June in the big hall of the National Library “Sv. Sv. Cyril and Metodii - 1882”. Amateur groups as well as single authors from all over the country with their short thematic works participate in it. The event is organized by the National Library “Sv. Sv. Cyril and Metodii - 1882” in Popovo. It is intended for all camera-minded people and aims to present the most interesting works concerning a certain theme. The works are created by non-professional cinema clubs and cinema amateurs.

The event is realized on June 10 with the sup-port of the Municipality of Popovo, Centre of culture and National Library in Popovo. The feast of the town is attended by week-long cultural events: exhibitions, presentations of books, concerts, bazaars, etc.

4RUSALSKI FAIROF POPOVO

One of the most famous fairs in North-Eastern Bulgaria, which regained its popularity after 1989. It lasts for a week and is attended by numerous cultural events and a large number of fair stands and attractions. It is conducted during the “Ru-saliyska Nedelya” (week) starting with the feast of Holy Spirit - the first Monday after “Petdesetnica” (50 days after Easter). The fair was founded in the first decade of 20th century with the sanctification of a water spring considered to be healing which is located on the territory of the present Town’s Gar-den. This is one of the three events together with Christmas and Easter that gather the scattered all over Bulgaria and the world population of Popovo again in their town of birth.

The event takes place from June 8 to June 10 in the Sum-mer theater of Popovo or on the town’s central square. It is organized by the municipality. Dancing groups and memberships from the twin towns in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Macedonia, Greece, Serbia, Turkey and Po-land participate in it.

On January 6, 2009 was revived the tradition of the ritual “casting of the cross” in the lake in the yard of the fire station. The event gradually becomes an anticipated and frequently visited feast not only for the Orthodox Christians.

The municipality of Razgrad is located in the central part of North-East-ern Bulgaria. The town of Razgrad is located on both banks of Beli Lom River. It is in the heart of the Ludogorie area – land of ancient civilizations and cultures. Abritus, Hrusgrad, Razgrad – these are the different names of the town during the centuries. Thracians, Romans, Goths, Bulgars, Slavs and other left their traces here. Since the times of the ancient Ro-man town Abritus to present day different ethnic groups with their spe-cific spiritual and material culture coexisted in the area. The local people learned to accept and respect the other groups and to live in accord with them. That is why nowadays the town has a unique spirit and the peo-ple in it are particularly tolerant and hospitable. The local ethnographic group is called “Kapantsi” and is also unique, because it is one of the oldest on the Balkan Peninsula. The legends for its origin coming directly

from the Bulgars of Aspharuh are fascinating and we are ready to tell them if you are interested.

Razgrad has a rich cultural and historic herit-age, environmental properties, preserved

traditions and intense spiritual life. The preservation and upholding of the cultur-

al values and benefits are also a centu-ry-old tradition typical for the people in Razgrad. That is the reason why there is no closed cultural institute or amateur group in the town and the cultural calendar of Razgrad is one of the richest in the country.

The numerous historical monuments and architectural sights combine well with the everyday diversity of the town streets. From the time of the National Revival to present day a rich cultural life was always present here – music, scenic arts, painting, etc. The cultural institutes in the town have impressive per-formances on national and foreign stages. Nenov”; Art Gallery “Prof. Iliya Petrov” keeping in its inventory over 3000 canvases and sculptures; Professional “Kapanski” Ensemble; School dancing formation; Children folklore en-semble “Ludogorche”; Regional Library “Prof. Boyan Penev” having more than 300 000 books in its library fund; Historical Museum with exquisitely exposed exposition and rich funds including world-famous unique artifacts such as the statue of Golden Pegasus; Ethnographic Museum, museum houses of Dimitar Nenov, Ananie Yavashov, Stanka and Nikola Ikono-movi and many more. The access to all cultural institutes and monuments is adapted to the special needs of the people with disabilities.

With their inherent warmth and heartiness the people in Razgrad meet and welcome with pleasure the guests from near and faraway places. All seasons are interesting in Razgrad but in June and July it is particularly exciting challenge to be in this town. This is the time when two important festivals are conducted – The White Nights of Razgrad and The Yogurt Fair.

1THE WHITE NIGHTS OF RAZGRAD 2 ANNUAL YOGURT FAIR AND FESTIVAL OF NATIONAL TRADITIONS AND ARTISTIC HANDICRAFTS

ABRITUSThis international art festival is the trademark of Razgrad making it known all over the world. In its heart is one culinary tradition – the famous yogurt from Razgrad still being prepared according to an ancient local recipe. Every year, at the end of July, the town becomes the capitol of the month. For three days the masters of yogurt and artistic hand-icrafts from Bulgaria and abroad meet here. Their exhibition is one of the largest in the country. The streets and the squares of the town are flooded with foreign speech, colors and smiles. Dancing formations from all over the world compete show-ing the beauty of their native folklore. Traditional marches and evening concerts gather hundreds of cherishers of beauty and exotic rhythms.

It is a festival honoring the cultural and historic heritage of the town and its monuments. It takes place annually in two consecutive nights on Enyovden /June 23 and 24/. The first night is devoted to the museums and monuments in the town. It starts as a wave from the Art Gallery, passes through the museum houses of Stanka and Nikola Ikonomovi and Ananie Yavashov, the Ethnographic complex and ends in the house of Dimitar Nenov. The hosts here are the town’s cultural institutes and the amateur groups. The old buildings live a new life through the means of the arts and in the buildings’ fresh gardens the locals and the guests enjoy wonderful concerts and performances. The magic of the nestinar dances and of the ancient customs and beliefs interweave with the contemporary sound and the new artistic expressions of the young artists.

The second night is devoted to the antic past and is conducted in the Archeological preserve “Abritus”. The presentation of ancient customs and cults from the age of the Roman Empire is excitingly combined with fiery and musical performances. The antic villa ”Urbana” becomes a natural decoration of the event while being enlightened by dozens of torches from the fortress walls. The conduct of the event is sup-ported by The Municipality of Razgrad and the Re-gional Historical Museum.

5 NATIONAL CONTEST FOR SUBJECTIVE AND THEMATIC DANCES “THE BULGARIAN CHILDREN DANCE”

4 INTERNATIONAL EN PLEIN AIR PAINTING “MYSTICISM AND REALITY”

The event is conducted once in every four years in Razgrad. The exhibition includes contemporary paintings, black and white drawings and sculpture. It is organized with the co-operation of the Municipality of Razgrad, Art Gallery “Prof. Iliya Petrov” in Razgrad and the Union of Bulgarian Painters. All painters from Bulgaria are invited to the contest.

The event is conducted once per every two years by the Municipality of Razgrad, the National association for children’s dancing art and the National section of CIOFF under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture. The aim of the contest is to stimulate authors, choreographers and children to create and perform new thematic and subjective dance products and to enrich and diversify the list of children teams.

The event is conducted in June in every odd year with the support of the Municipality of Razgrad and Art Gallery “Prof. Iliya Petrov”. According to the rules of the En Plein Air Painting, the painters should create two new paint-ings which will be presented in an exhibition in AG “Prof. Iliya Petrov”. A special catalogue including the paint-ings in Razgrad is prepared for the participants in the En Plein Air Painting. According to the promoters the aim of the event is the development and recognition of artis-tic culture, stimulation for quests and experiments to national and foreign painters, enrichment of the gallery’s collection of paint-ings and development of crea-tive contacts and co-operation.

The event is conducted on January 28, the day in which Razgrad is liberated by 3rd Artillery Regiment under the command of Duke Alexander Dondukov Korsakov.

The aim of the exhibition is:

• To attract the attention of the Bulgarian painters towards the north-eastern region of Bulgaria and to give them an opportunity for free artistic performance;

• To make known the contempo-rary Bulgarian painters and their work to the cherishers of art and inhabitants of the town and the region.

The event is conducted in June. It is carried out in different locations in the town. Workshops of par-ticular arts, open stages, open party and evening concerts are prepared for its purposes. Participa-tion in all events is accessible and free. Enrollment as a volunteer or a participant in the event is com-pleted by sending names and telephone contact on e-mail:razgrad_scena@abv.bg

The contest is conducted in every fifth year and is devoted to the first Bulgarian female poet from the National Revival period – Stanka Nikolica Spaso-Elenina. Promoter of the event is the Municipality of Razgrad, the Union of the Bulgarian Writers and Regional Library“Prof. Boyan Penev”.

All choirs in North-Eastern Bulgaria participate in the event. It is conducted in May in every odd year with the support of the Municipality of Razgrad, NL “Razvitie 1896” and Choir “Iron Strings”.

For students in musical schools in Bulgaria. The event is conducted in April in every odd year with the support of the Municipality of Razgrad, NL “Razvitie 1869” and Museum House “Dimitar Nenov”.

The event is conducted in May in every even year. The most prominent performers from the country and abroad participate in it. The promoter of the event is the Philharmony “Prof. D. Nenov” in Razgrad and the Municipality of Razgrad.

The aim of the contest: to discover young, talented performers; to preserve and popu-larize the work of Dimitar Nenov; to create friendly relations between the talented chil-dren.
