Reimagining the Delta’s Workforce

2014 DRA Program Highlights

A skilled workforce is a core tenet of a community’s economic competi-tiveness in attracting business investment and economic opportunity. With this reality, communities across the Delta region are investing in training their local workforce to meet the needs of 21st century jobs.

It is clear that in order to compete for the jobs, business investments, and economic success of the future, regional leaders must strength-en the educational attainment, skill levels, and abilities of the Delta region’s workforce through systems-based training, improved educa-tion from early childhood to technical school, and job preparation.

Between 2008 and 2012, the number of Delta workers whose highest degree was a high school diploma was 13 percent higher than the national average (55.8 percent in the Delta versus only 49.5 percent nationally). These high school graduates have the foundation for training in medium to high-level skills but we must complete the worker pipeline with educational programs and opportunities to expand their skill sets.

In response to this need, the Delta region’s states and communi-ties have been developing innovative and award-winning programs that continue to build the workforce pipeline, tying worker training to specific industry needs and breaking down geographic barriers to connect ideas and resources to workers throughout the Delta. Using the report Re-imagining Workforce Development, the DRA is helping Delta communities change how they think about workforce develop-ment with four key strategies: Reimagining Readiness, Reengaging Adult Learners and Disconnected Youth, Realigning Resources, and Ramping Up Investments in Workforce Development.

The Delta Regional Authority believes that the region’s workers are the building blocks of a stronger, brighter economic future for the region and is committed to working with leaders from across the Delta to invest in current programs and support future programs that provide workers with the skills demanded by today’s and future businesses, preparing Delta workers to obtain good-paying jobs that strengthen the Delta region’s economy.

State Workforce Summits -- From August to October 2014, the DRA hosted eight state summits to bring leadership from business & industry, education, and government together to take real steps towards building a pipeline of skilled workers to meet the demand of the globally competitive labor market. More then 680 lead-ers participated in the summits and are actively applying lessons learned to strengthen their local workforce development systems.

Capacity Building and Technical Assistance Fund -- The DRA invested $1.7 million into communities and regions through a competitive funding program to encourage communities to train and connect their leadership to begin planning and implementing regional workforce development systems. Additionally, some recipients are participating in a Delta region-specific workshop series through the ACT Work Ready Communities Academy.

DRA’s investments are helping to create a pipeline of skilled workers for the region.
