ALBERT CHARLES BARNES FONDS. – [194-].

Biographical sketchAlbert Charles Barnes was born on February 12, 1916 in Edmonton, Alberta. He attended the GreggCollege in Chicago, Illinois from 1936 to 1937, and won the Gregg Diamond Medal in the world-wideGregg competition for speed and accuracy in shorthand in 1937. He was a stenographer for manyyears, reporting the proceedings of various conventions and all sessions of the Alberta Legislature forthree years. From 1940 to 1944, Barnes was on the members' stenographers staff of the House ofCommons in Ottawa.

Between 1944 and 1946, Barnes acted as Sheriff of the Yukon Territory, and Official Court Reporterand Registrar of the Yukon Territorial Court. When the man whom he was replacing officially retiredin 1946, Barnes took over the part-time positions. In August 1948, Barnes was accepted into theTerritorial Court as an articled law clerk. During his time in the Yukon, Barnes also worked for theDepartment of Mines and Resources. By 1951, he had moved to Vancouver where he became theOffices of Vancouver Court Reporter. He was also a member of the National Shorthand ReportersAssociation and Ottawa Civil Service Association.

Custodial historyThe fonds was donated to the Legal Archives of British Columbia by Mrs. F. B. Flach, sister ofA. C. Barnes. The L.A.B.C. offered the Yukon-related portion of the fonds to the Yukon Archives.

Scope and contentThe fonds primarily consists of black and white photographs taken along the Alaska Highway, and inDawson City and Whitehorse. Many reflect scenes from the Alaska Highway during the mid to late1940s, including photographs of buildings, planes, vehicles and people. There are also photographs ofparades, a gathering of the Yukon Order of Pioneers in Dawson City, a Governor-General's visit toDawson City, a giant northern mosquito, several people, including Barnes himself, and Barnes' homeand office in Dawson. All of these photographs were probably taken between 1944 and 1950. Thereare also 30 postcards, one of which Barnes sent to his mother.

SERIES I. POSTCARDS. – [194-].

Physical description30 postcards : b&w, 1 hand-tinted ; 8.5 x 14 cm.

Scope and contentThis series consists of postcards with photographs of a variety of scenes of the Yukon and northernB.C. The postcards depict scenes of the Alaska Highway and Whitehorse, including the NorthcraftIndian Craft Shop and the Regina Hotel. There are several of the "Northern" or "Yukon Mosquito"which is a large toy mosquito shown attacking a man. All of the cards are blank on the verso with theexception of one (PHO 44, #23) that Mr. Barnes sent to his mother in January 1947. The postcardswere probably taken during the mid-1940s. Only PHO 44, #1 has the original date. Most of thecaptions below were taken directly from the postcards.

SERIES II. PHOTOGRAPHS WITH BARNES' ORIGINAL CAPTIONS. – [194-].

Scope and contentThis series contains photographs that were probably taken by A. C. Barnes during his travels innorthern B.C. and the Yukon on the British Yukon Navigation (B.Y.N.) bus, and during other trips inthe Yukon and Alaska. Most reflect scenes along the Alaska Highway including bridges, buildingsand unidentified people. The communities that he photographed include Rancheria, Teslin,Whitehorse, and Dawson City. Barnes also travelled up the north highway towards the Alaska border.

Most of the photographs are scenic shots,although a few have unidentified people in them. These photographs are accompanied byBarnes' typewritten list noting the location of each scene.

Scope and contentThis series contains photos that were in 8 small snapshot albums. The photographs were taken alongthe Alaska Highway between northern B.C. and the Alaska border during the 1940s; several are of theTeslin area. Mr. Barnes was probably travelling in the British Yukon Navigation (B.Y.N.) bus.Unidentified people, buildings, the church and stores in Teslin, airplanes, Whitehorse airport, DawsonCity scenes and Barnes himself are seen in these photographs.

APPENDIX A: ARCHIVAL SELECTION CRITERIA

Due to the content of the donated photographs, the Yukon Archives did not retain all items. Of the255 photographs received, 176 have been kept.

The Yukon Archives retained the photographs based on content. This material reflects life in theterritory, for example, modes of transportation, people and buildings. Many of the identified scenicshots are also valuable, whereas scenes that were either not of the Yukon or did not contain significantinformation about the Yukon have not been retained.
