INVENTIONS

Atomic BombIn 1939, Einstein and several other scientists told Roosevelt of efforts in Nazi Germany to build an atomic bomb. It was shortly thereafter that the United States Government began the Manhattan Project, whose research produced the first atomic bomb.

Atomic ClockThe US primary time and frequency standard is a cesium fountain atomic clock developed at the NIST laboratories.

Audio Tape RecordingMarvin Camras invented the method and means of magnetic recording. The history of sound recording.

Automated Electrified Monorail SystemsRonald Riley invented the automated electrified monorail system.

Automatic DoorsDee Horton and Lew Hewitt invented the sliding automatic door in 1954.

Band-AidBand-Aid® is the trademarked name for the 1920 invention belonging to Earle Dickson.

Bar CodesThe first patents for bar code were issued to Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver on October 7, 1952.

BarbequeIn America, barbecue (or BBQ) originated in the late 1800's during Western cattle drives.

Barbed WireDon't fence me in -- all about the invention, development, and use of barbed wire.

Barbie DollThe Barbie doll was invented in 1959 by Ruth Handler.

Blood BankDr. Charles Richard Drew was the first person to develop the blood bank.

Blue JeansLevi Strauss invented blue jeans.

Board GamesPuzzle over the history of board games and other brain teasers.

Body Armor & Bullet Proof VestsHumans throughout recorded history have used various types of materials as body armor to protect themselves from injury in combat and other dangerous situations.

BoilersBabcock and Wilcox co-invented the water tube steam boiler, a safer and more efficient boiler.

Cash RegisterJames Ritty invented what was nicknamed the "Incorruptible Cashier" or the cash register.

Cassette TapeIn 1963, the Philips company became the first company to demonstrate the compact audio cassette.

Cat EyesPercy Shaw patented his road-safety invention called cat eyes, in 1934 when he was only 23.

Coat HangersToday’s wire coat hanger was inspired by a clothes hook patented in 1869 by O. A. North.

Eiffel TowerGustave Eiffel built the Eiffel Tower for the Paris World's Fair of 1889, which honored the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution.

ElasticIn 1820, Thomas Hancock patented elastic fastenings for gloves, suspenders, shoes and stockings.

ElevatorElisha Otis invented the "Improvement in Hoisting Apparatus" or elevator.

Electric BlanketIn 1936, the first automatic electric blanket was invented.

Escalator

In 1891, Jesse Reno created a new novelty ride at Coney Island that led to the invention of the escalator.

Etch-A-Sketch

The Etch-A-Sketch was developed in the late 1950s by Arthur Granjean.

FortranThe first high level programming language called fortran was invented by John Backus and IBM. See Also - Fortran GoTo

Freeze Drying/Freeze Dried FoodsThe basic process of freeze-drying foods were known to the Peruvian Incas of the Andes. Freeze drying is the removal of water from food while the food is frozen.

Frozen FoodsClarence Birdseye found a way to flash-freeze foods and deliver them to the public - several decades of frozen history.

Karaoke: Invented in 1975 by Roberto del Rosario. I really thought this was a Japanese invention, despite its’ popularity here, and I was completely wrong. A brilliant guy, he invented many other musical

devices, but Karaoke will always be remembered as his greatest triumph (or bane to humankind, depending on your point of view.)

Medical Incubator: Invented in 1941 by Fe del Mundo. She was the first Asian student in Harvard’s School of medicine. Countless young lives were saved by her invention and genius.

Moon Buggy: Invented in 1968 by Eduardo San Juan. He was the project leader for NASA in the buggy development: An underfunded and underappreciated engineering success. This one has special significance to me, due to my Grandfather working at the Cape in the early space program. The moon buggy allowed greater exploration of the Moon, yet Eduardo San Juan’s contribution has been relegated largely to status as a footnote.

Erythromycin: Invented (Discovered) by Dr. Abelardo Aguilar in 1949. He sent a sample to Eli Lilly, who promptly stole the idea and patented it, and later marketed it successfully. Remember kids, this is why the great inventors always go to attorneys first… He never received a single peso from his product, that saved millions of lives (Thank him if you are allergic to penicillin!).

Yoyo: Invented as a hunting weapon by the ancient Filipinos, probably in the Visayas. “Discovered” when Magellan landed.

Video Phone: Invented by Gregorio Zara, in 1955 no less! When James Bond was using one in Dr. No, it had already been in existence a number of years. This is the predecessor of the camera in your mobile!

Computer Microchips: Many types were invented by Diosdado Banatao, beginning with the world’s first 16-bit chip in 1972, which he invented while working at Commodore. This led to the development of GUI (The thing that makes the graphics on this page…). Why should you care? Without GUI, you would now be looking at a page filled with nothing but a bunch of ones and zeroes.

Isolated Rice Breeds: In 1966, Dr. Rodolfo Aquino isolated nine specific breeds of rice for the International Rice Research Institute. His discoveries helped prevent famine in much of Asia, and were nearly solely responsible for Thailand and Vietnam becoming the world’s leading rice producers (A spot once solely occupied by the Philippines.).

Drug Detection: Dr. Enrique Ostrea developed the method for detecting drug use by pregnant females by detecting traces in the baby’s stools. His method is used by doctors worldwide in diagnosing drug dependency in infants.

Jeepney: Immediate post-war, and the most common form of transportation in the country today. A Filipino invention, though born from necessity, ingenuity, and thrift.

Patis: Love it or hate it, I was surprised that it has only been around for the last 60 years! Additionally, the Filipino Patis was the basis for the Vietnamese and Thai fish sauce industries, and not the other way around. (If you think Filipinos use a lot, after a week in Thailand or Vietnam???) It was invented by Tantay Food and Sauces after they discovered that their dried fish were turning into liquid when stored with salt in earthen jars.
