Products made in Chinese factories are sold all around the world. Chinese factory workers send products to boats and the boats send the products all around the world. China’s factory workers sell all the products they make and get a lot of money. Some Chinese workers get a lot of money but most Chinese workers don’t get a lot of money. Jobs by WilliamJobs by WilliamMost Chinese people are farmers. Chinese people catch fish and send them to factories. There are roughly 60 million factory workers in China. Millions of people have left the countryside of China to find work in growing cites. More than half of China’s workers (people) are farmers. Some fish farmers raise fish in special ponds. Fish farmers tame wild birds called Cormorants to fish for them. The Cormorants wear a special collar that won’t allow them to eat the fish. Most farmers use traditional ways without tractors and other farm machines. Chinese farmers grow rice and other plants (food). Chinese farmers grow rice in wet fields called “paddies” that naturally grow those crops. More food they grow and eat is, wheat, tea, cotton, ducks, fish, vegetables, pigs and chickens. China’s farmers sell their crops for Yuan (money).

There many festivals and here I’m going to tell you my favorite is…Chinese New Year. They do a lot of stuff on New Years Eve and New Years Day. Kids carry lanterns in a nighttime parade. Do you know they give money to the kids on New Years? Well they do. They also light candles on New Years Eve. It also lasts for 15 days. It is really important to Chinese families. They spend time with their families and friends. They put decorations that are red, (red is a lucky color in china). They want to get ready for Chinese New Year, so they clean the house. They have a parade on the last day of the old year.

Celebrations by MillieCelebrations by MillieHave you ever heard of a Dragon Boat Race? The Dragon Boat Race happened over 2,000 years ago when a man named Qu yuan drowned himself by jumping off a boat because he couldn’t stand seeing his land being destroyed by poor leaders. When they went looking for him it was too late. They threw rice in the water to calm his spirit. One day Qu yuan’s spirit returned and told them that the rice they threw was devoured by a river dragon. He asked if they could wrap the rice in leaves like little pyramids and that is how the Dragon Boat Race started. Today people think of The Dragon Boat racing as a paddling sport but they do not play it all the time. The Dragon Boats are made of teak wood they paint it to look like a dragon. To see if the rowers should move faster or slower they use a drum. If they need to move faster they pounds the drum fast. If they need to move slower they pound it slower. Who would want to move slower anyway?

Children from the age of 6 to 12 go to elementary school. They learn science, math, Chinese, English, history, geography, art and physical education. Children begin school at 6 and a half. Kids in China go to elementary school just like kids in the United States. Many Chinese teenagers stay in school and go onto college. Chinese children must learn to read around 3,500 characters. China has the largest education in the world. It takes a long time for children to read and write Chinese. That is because the language has more than 50,000 characters. Adults who read many books can read around 6,000 characters.

They sail on rivers and canals. Big ships from around the world visit China’s ports. Did you know the boats on the Yangtze River take people to the biggest cities? Trains and trucks bring products around China. The train is the cheapest way to travel on long distance trips. More and more people are starting to drive cars. Cars are expensive in China. People in China also travel by bus. In China buses carry more people around than cars. Did you know for a short distance trip, men carry carriages called Rickshaws? There are lots of great architecture in China such as Forbidden City, Diwang Tower, The Bund and City Wall, but our favorite one is The Great Wall of China. The Great Wall of China was built thousands of years ago. It was made in 215 B.C. (in the 7th century). Did you know that the Great Wall was built by groups of soldiers, common people, and criminals and also made to keep out invaders? Do you know that the Great Wall stretches about 4,500 miles, and you can see it from space and the moon? Let me tell you something, the Great Wall is one of the largest man made structures. We think the people who built the Great Wall were very brave because they wanted to protect their country. The Great Wall was made of stones and some wood. The Great Wall was very hard to build because it’s very long and it took years to build it. Guess what! The Great Wall workers had to build the wall without stopping. I feel bad for the workers because it was hard to build the Great Wall.

If you play dominos you can play with a friend. It is a good game to play like mahjong. You have so many pieces like dominos, but mahjong is different because you have to match the pieces. It is a little hard because sometimes you can’t find a mach. You might try the game sometime. I think you will like arrow shooting. It is one of the school games. It is so much fun and hard because it is hard to hit the middle. So try it.

Food is an important part of the Chinese life. People think that in China everyone eats rice but people in Northern China get wild millet, sorghum and wheat instead of rice. People in Northern China make wheat into bread and noodles. Soup is a very common food in China and an important part of a Chinese meal. Wow! I never knew that. Chinese people celebrate with all kinds of foods such as dumplings and suckling pig. Oooh tasty. Western china is known for its spicy foods cooked with lots of chili. We would not want to go there. In Eastern China people enjoy fresh seafood with rice. Cool. Sounds good. People in and around Beijing use a lot of chili and garlic in their foods. That does not sound so good to me. Those are some facts about Chinese food.
