THE INTERSECTION OF MANAGEMENT AND SCIENCE HAS NEVER

BEEN MORE EXCITING, MORE COMPLEX, OR MORE DAUNTING.

Perhaps you are seeking to get ahead of that change. Or maybe you are the mover and shaker behind the transformations that will reshape your organization, community, or industry.

Leadership styles and strategy must also adjust to these drastic changes in the way business is done, from flat organizational structures to the proliferation of remote work to dynamic macroeconomic factors. Success requires a combination of hard and soft skills, a vision for the future, and courageous leadership.

At MIT Sloan Executive Education, our courses, executive certificates, and custom programs are designed to help you and your business respond to disruption, implement new technologies and business models, and acquire both the technical and leadership capabilities that are necessary to lead these sweeping shifts.

REGARDLESS OF YOUR INDUSTRY, IT’S LIKELY YOU’VE SEEN MASSIVE DISRUPTION AND INNOVATION— AND YOU’RE PROBABLY BRACING FOR MORE.

FROM PETER HIRST

Calvin oversees the logistics of multiple military operations and hundreds of employees for BAE Systems in Afghanistan. As his roles with BAE have become

increasingly multifaceted and global, he’s turned to MIT Sloan Executive Education to help him find leading-edge solutions. And, because the principles he has learned apply equally well across industries, Calvin has also applied many of his takeaways

to his environmental sustainability startup, eevig.

“The quality of instruction is phenomenal. The frameworks are taught by academics as well as practitioners who know how to steer the courses to make it applicable to real life.”

Given his distance from campus, he has also taken advantage of our growing portfolio of online courses. He is now on his way to earning an Advanced

Certificate for Executives in Management, Innovation, and Technology (ACE).

Calvin has found that the courses at MIT don’t exist in a vacuum but instead resemble puzzle pieces that fit together. “You might learn

a framework in one program, then eventually learn a different component in another, and one day you

find yourself linking the two to compose a solution to a problem.”

DEBORAH ANCONA

“It is a pleasure to teach in the Executive Education programs, as there are motivated executives from around the world who are excited to learn and to apply our models to their organizations. These classes blend theory and practice so that each informs the other. Participants are usually ready to jump into action immediately, forcing us to think about how our work can be applied to today’s organizational problems and challenges. The courses are also an opportunity to get to know participants and organizations in some depth so that our work is more about working collaboratively rather than as a transaction.”

Deborah Ancona is the Seley Distinguished Professor of Management, a Professor of Organization Studies, and the Director of the MIT Leadership Center at MIT Sloan. Her pioneering research into how successful teams operate has highlighted the critical importance of managing outside, as well as inside, the team’s boundary. This research directly led to the concept of X-Teams as a vehicle for driving innovation within large organizations. She teaches in Neuroscience for Leadership (page 23) and Transforming Your Leadership Strategy (page 23).

VIVEK FARIAS

“I enjoy teaching in Executive Education. Our participants are acutely aware of the opportunity cost of their time. This awareness makes them eager to soak up every last morsel I have to offer in my lectures. At the same time, their diverse experiences across sectors and verticals adds a tremendous amount of context, color, and even counterpoints to the pedagogy. As such, I feel like I come away from a session rejuvenated and having learned as much as my students.”

Vivek Farias is the Patrick J. McGovern (1959) Professor and an Associate Professor of Operations Management at the MIT Sloan School of Management. His research focuses on the development of new methodologies for large-scale dynamic optimization under uncertainty, and the application of these methodologies to the design of practical revenue management strategies across various industries ranging from airlines and retail to online advertising. He teaches in Advanced Management Program (page 17) and Developing a Leading Edge Operations Strategy (page 31).

JEANNE ROSS

“Executive Education sessions provide a lab for sharing findings, testing frameworks, and planning how to apply useful insights. I thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to engage deeply with thoughtful practitioners.”

Jeanne W. Ross is a Principal Research Scientist at the MIT Center for Information Systems Research (CISR), where she directs and conducts academic research that targets the challenges of senior level executives at CISR’s more than eighty global sponsor companies. She studies how firms develop competitive advantage through the implementation and reuse of digitized platforms. ROBERTO RIGOBON

“The world has become increasingly complex. Populism, central banking decisions, and trade wars are affecting companies everywhere. I love the fact that our participants bring the experience of how their businesses are affected by the global environment and share that dose of reality in our discussions. Macroeconomics should be intuitive, relevant, and fun. Their knowledge complements our discussions perfectly.”

Roberto Rigobon is an economist whose research focuses on the causes of balance-of-payments crises, financial crises, and the propagation of them across countries——the phenomenon of contagion. He is the Society of Sloan Fellows Professor of Management and a Professor of Applied Economics at MIT Sloan. He is also a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, a member of the Census Bureau’s Scientific Advisory Committee, and a Visiting Professor at Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Administración in Venezuela. Roberto teaches in Blockchain Technologies: Business Innovation and Application (self-paced online) (page 31), Strategies for Sustainable Business (page 29) and Understanding Global Markets: Macroeconomics for Executives (page 23).

It’s formal recognition of your professional development. And, as many executives attest, it can be a significant catalyst in your career.

EXECUTIVE CERTIFICATES

MIT Sloan Executive Certificate holder Neil Ackerman has many achievements to his credit, from inventing and managing Amazon’s global Small and Light

program to spearheading Mondelez International’s direct-to-consumer supply chain models. Leveraging his outstanding leadership agility, and with 10 patents to his name,

he is now a senior director of supply chain planning and innovation for global healthcare giant Johnson and Johnson. Neil acknowledges that he’s been on an amazing journey—

one in which MIT played a significant role.

When Neil first came to MIT in 2008, it was to pursue an MIT Sloan Executive Certificate in Strategy and Innovation. During his programs, Neil learned that nothing happens

without an efficient and effective supply chain. “I immediately began developing frameworks for applying what I learned to my work. And it’s how I discovered my passion for supply chain.” Neil returned to MIT Sloan in 2010 to earn an Executive Certificate in Management and Leadership, with the goal of deepening his skills in

those areas as well.

“I’m not naïve about what MIT Sloan Executive Certificates has done for me. In addition to the skills and frameworks you can acquire,

it’s important to realize that the reputation of MIT Sloan is very meaningful in the business world.”

BENEFITS FOR EXECUTIVE CERTIFICATE HOLDERS

HOW EXECUTIVE CERTIFICATES WORK

Executive Certificates are offered in three tracks:

●Management and Leadership

●Strategy and Innovation

●Technology, Operations, and Value Chain Management

Certificates are earned by completing four programs, with at least three of those programs coming from your chosen track. You have up to four years to earn your certificate, but because courses in our portfolio are often scheduled consecutively, it’s possible to earn a certificate in as few as two weeks. At least one of the four programs must be attended in person rather than online.

With more than 55 courses in our portfolio, there are literally hundreds of possible combinations that can meet these certificate requirements.

More about Executive Certificates

■ You can decide to pursue an Executive Certificate at any time, whether you’re new to MIT or a frequent participant. MIT Sloan Executive Education programs you have already taken (within the past four years) can count toward your certificate.

■ The cost of an Executive Certificate depends on the specific courses selected.

■ If you are applying for more than one program on the same application, you can take advantage of our multi-registration discount.

THE ADVANCED CERTIFICATE FOR EXECUTIVES

The ACE is a special Executive Certificate for participants who attend 25 program days and complete at least two programs from each certificate track within a four-year period. At least 10 of these program days must be attended in person rather than online. The ACE is not a single program with a single group of participants. Rather, you design your certificate plan by choosing the courses and schedule that work best for you.

In addition to the many perks of being an Executive Certificate holder, such as a 20% discount on future programs and invitations to select MIT Sloan events, ACE holders also receive:

■ MIT Sloan affiliate alumni status

■ An MIT Sloan email-forwarding-for-life address

■ A profile in the MIT Sloan alumni directory

■ A subscription to the MIT Sloan alumni newsletter

Because our portfolio includes programs that are scheduled back-to-back, some participants choose to earn their ACE in one month-long visit. This experience allows them to step away from the office and take an immersive, deep dive into the subjects they care about most.

Other executives pursuing their ACE decide to spread their course requirements out over time, giving them an opportunity to implement new learnings before returning to campus. They may also choose to enroll in one or more online programs that enable them to participate from anywhere in the world.

SAMPLE ACE PLAN Each course listed below counts as two program days unless otherwise noted:

Sometimes, executives come to MIT for a short course or even to earn a certificate and decide that they want more—more in-depth, hands-on learning experiences, more time with faculty and peers, more time in the dynamic ecosystem of MIT—and further recognition of their commitment to continuous education. These professionals often decide to earn their “ACE”: The Advanced Certificate for Executives in Management, Innovation, and Technology.

Mia Hemmi is an Account Director at one of the largest advertising/marketing communications agencies in Japan, headquartered in Tokyo.

In 2016, her husband relocated to participate in an academic program in Cambridge. Mia was on childcare leave, so she decided to join him and commit to an academic adventure of her own. She scoured the websites of many programs but was

most intrigued by MIT’s fusion of management and science, which she felt resonated with the direction her industry was headed. Over the course of a few months, Mia earned her Advanced Certificate for Executives in Management, Innovation, and Technology (ACE).

“Earning the ACE was very attractive to me, as I wanted to be able to network within the MIT ecosystem as an MIT Sloan affiliate alumna. This is important, as I believe MIT is and will remain a leading institution.” Mia also enjoyed making connections with colleagues from all over the world. “It feels like we've spent years together.”

Mia took a deep dive with intensive programs like the Global Executive Academy and Driving Strategic Innovation, as well as two-day programs including Managing Product Platforms and Essential

Charles Betito Filho has been an entrepreneur and marketing executive for 18 years, founding Hive Digital Media in 2004 and leading it to become one of Brazil’s premiere marketing technology companies. He is also deeply passionate about promoting clarity

and compassion in the business world, which is why he has been studying and practicing mindfulness meditation for more than 12 years. He is currently the President of the board of

Hive and holds the Executive Director position at a meditation center in São Paulo.

Charles originally came to MIT Sloan Executive Education to participate in the Global Executive Academy. “I was looking for an institution that shared my outlook on

leadership as serving a larger purpose, helping humanity, and I found this at MIT. But this extraordinary quality— that was the big surprise.”

After GEA, Charles decided he wanted more. “So, I sat down and, in three hours, created my calendar for the rest of the year.” He has since earned his Advanced

Certificate for Executives in Management, Innovation, and Technology (ACE).

“What amazes me most is not just the intellect at MIT but the desire to create impact in the world in the most positive way. Much

more than profiteering, people here are interested in creating a better future. I was thrilled

to be a part of this.”

Riley Rees came to MIT Sloan in 2017 to participate in the week-long Entrepreneurship Development Program (EDP). A Major and C-17 Aircraft

Commander in the U.S. Air Force Reserves as well as an airline pilot, Riley is also a developing entrepreneur.

“Those of us in the military have a strong ethos—we’re prone to doing the hard

work. I knew that with the right frameworks and tools, I could get something off the ground and make an impact.” Riley found EDP extremely validating. The program also connected her to a network of global entrepreneurs and a vibrant ecosystem

“Everyone here will do everything they can to help you,” she says.Through her EDP experience, Riley realized she wanted to be more involved.

Now she is enrolled in MIT Sloan’s Executive MBA program. "It’s hard to describe how transformative the program is without experiencing it

On the eastern edge of the MIT campus, you’ll find the intersection of Main Street and Broadway, an area known as Kendall Square. This point is more than just a location on a map, a business district, or a subway stop. It is the epicenter of an innovation ecosystem.

With its unparalleled concentration of tech ventures, life sciences companies, and startups, this hub of invention and ideas has been proclaimed to be “the most innovative square mile on the planet.”

Entrepreneurs, researchers, inventors, venture capitalists, and students thrive in this innovation ecosystem rife with incubator opportunities and fueled by its rich pioneering past. Behind any wall or within any doorway, some of the world’s top minds are designing AI robots, mapping neural pathways, and working to cure cancer. Many of today’s top

global tech companies have set up shop here, from Google to Amazon to Microsoft.

And, it didn’t happen by accident.

MIT has been instrumental in shaping the area since moving its main campus to Cambridge in 1916. Collaborating with various stakeholders, the Institute continues to transform the area through new housing, retail, and open space, while maintaining its promise to carve out “innovation space”—small, affordable offices for startup companies.

Our Executive Education programs are infused with this spirit. While you are here, make the most of this innovative square mile: network at the venture café, which opens its doors to the entire community every Thursday night; explore the MIT Museum; and meander the campus using the MIT Mobile app (mobi.mit.edu).

DISCOVERY

Kendall Square is the bustling center of the biotech industry, and one of the best places in the world to launch a biotechnology startup company. Here you’ll find the prestigious Whitehead and Broad institutes and the research hubs of Novartis, Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Amgen, Baxter, Biogen, and more. You’ll also find LabCentral, a first-of-its-kind shared laboratory space designed as a launchpad for as many as 60 high-potential life-sciences and biotech startups and ~200 scientists and entrepreneurs.

INCEPTION

If you’re motivated by possibility, consider that this area was once plagued by abandoned factories and empty parking lots. Today, Kendall Square is a community dedicated to unleashing groundbreaking discoveries and solutions to the world’s biggest problems. It is home to the Cambridge Innovation Center, which houses more start-ups than any other building in the world. And that is just one building. Planners and investors fueling the revitalization of Kendall Square have designed it to further attract, nurture, and propel pioneers in fields from biotech to IT.

THE ‘MOST INNOVATIVE SQUARE MILE ON EARTH’

“ I see Kendall Square as being the heartbeat for innovation and technology … The incubator effect Kendall Square is having on the suburbs and cities around it is a positive for the region.”

KATIE STEBBINS

Assistant Secretary of Innovation, Technology & Entrepreneurship for Massachusetts

“ Kendall Square is the epicenter, but the reach is all around the edge of campus … In a few square miles, you have an enormous concentration of startups, high-tech companies, and venture capital firms. What makes Kendall so interesting to watch is its proximity to the surge of talent at MIT, the universities, and the hospitals.”

DEMONSTRATION

The galleries, exhibitions, demonstrations, workshops, performances, conversations, and debates made available to the public in and around MIT invite visitors to participate in the ongoing adventure of research and innovation. The MIT Museum, for example, features rotating exhibitions, programs, events, guided gallery tours, and hands-on workshops, including activities in the Idea Hub led by MIT faculty and students and the annual Cambridge Science Festival.

INSPIRATION

Step out of the Kendall ‘T’ station and find the Entrepreneur Walk of Fame, a tribute to the greatest minds in American entrepreneurship. Honoring household names such as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Thomas Edison, the walk adds new plaques every year to recognize the latest contributions and share inspiring stories.

Are you destined to turn your unique idea into a business success story? You could find yourself immortalized in stone.

DESIGN YOUR EXPERIENCEMIT Sloan approaches each of our custom engagements as a lasting, mutually productive relationship, not an isolated educational transaction. We look for companies that are interested in making fundamental, strategic changes in the way they do business.

As a first step, your top executives will meet with a team of MIT Sloan’s senior faculty to share your own imperatives, culture, and purpose. We will partner with your stakeholders to tailor a program that addresses the key challenges you’ve defined. Programs may include multiple residential sessions, virtual sessions, and action-learning projects taking place over the course of a few months or years.

Our experience has shown that a cadre of approximately 30 participants provides optimal discussion and meaningful interactions among faculty and participants. Programs frequently draw participants from around the world who connect—often for the first time—in the classroom and then work virtually on team projects that translate newly acquired frameworks into action strategies for your company.
