Regions of Canada

Atlantic Region

An extension of the Appalachian range, covers much of the Atlantic provinces. The provinces are called theMaritimes.

St Lawrence Lowlands

The smallest of Canada's physical areas is a flat, fertile land which has Canada's heaviest concentration ofpeople. Heartland of Canada.

Canadian Shield

in the heart of Canada, around Hudson Bay, the oldest part of the North American continent. North-east Alberta,Northern Saskatchewan, Northern Manitoba, Southern N.W.T, Ontario (except for the Ontario Peninsula),Quebec.

Great Plains

West of the Shield, flat, open land famous for its fields of wheat. Canada’s bread basket.

The Cordillera

A series of mountain chains stretching from the southwestern U.S. to Alaska + the Canadian Rockies (e.g.Banff National Park)

The Far North

Consisting of the Yukon Northwest territories, and Nunavut, vast archipelago, very unpopulated.

New Foundland:

St. John’s: Provincial capital, John Cabot, came her already in 1497. Most people are of Irish and Englishdescent, all over Newfoundland. Most easterly city on the North American continent.

Signal Hill/ Cabot Tower: Just outside St. John’s. strategic location, site of defense from the 18th centurythrough the Second World War. The first transatlantic wireless signal on December 12, 1901.

New Brunswick:

Fredrickton: capital,. (So-called Acadians flew there from Nova Scotia; they were expelled by the English at thetime most went all the way down the Mississippi and settled in Louisiana). After US War of Independence,lots of Loyalists settled here. When New Brunswick came into being, it became the capital and wasrenamed. Son of Charles II, Frederick town – shortened; happened to a lot of town names.

Fundy National Park: Seashore and Coastal Forests, along the coast of the Bay of Fundy

Nova Scotia

Peggy’s Cove: most popular touristy spot in Canada for tourists who do not stay over night.

Lunenburg: small town founded by German protestants, were encouraged by the British to settle the land, mid1800.

Halifax +Citadel: English foundation, to fight the French, there is a famous citadel there, is the provincial capital,on a peninsula, 1917 an infamous explosion which destroyed parts of the city, described in HughMacLennan’s novel Barometer Rising. Two ships one full of ammunition for WWI collided, exploded, morethat 2000 people died.

Montreal

Quebec City: capital of Quebec, Chateau, Frontenac – huge hotel that dominates the city skyline, Site of theBattle of the Plains of Abraham during the Seven Years War 1759, in which British troops under GeneralJames Wolfe defeated the French General de Montcalm and took the city. France later ceded New Franceto Britain. Here, the struggle over Canada between England and France was decided.

Ontario

Ottawa: Rideau Canal, Parliament Hill,

Niagara Falls, Welland Canal (links Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario, to avoid the Niagara Falls)

Algonquin Park (ispired the Group of Seven)
