THIRD ROCK FROM THE SUNHOW MUCH OF FRESHWATER IS THERE?

The largest sphere represents all of Earth's water, and its diameter is about 860 miles. It would have a volume of about 1,386,000,000 cubic kilometres km3. The sphereincludes all the water in the oceans, ice caps, lakes, andrivers, as well as groundwater, atmospheric water, andeven the water in you, your dog, and your tomato plant.How much of the total water is fresh water, which peopleand many other life forms need to survive? The bluesphere over Kentucky represents the world's liquid freshwater (groundwater, lakes, swamp water, and rivers). Thevolume comes to about 10,633,450 km3, of which 99 % isgroundwater, much of which is not accessible to humans.The diameter of this sphere is about 272.8 kilometres.Do you notice that "tiny" bubble over Atlanta, Georgia?That one represents fresh water in all the lakes and riverson the planet, and most of the water people and life of earth need every day comes from these surface-water sources. The volume of this sphere is about 93,113 km3. The diameter of this sphere is about 56.2 kilometres. Yes, Lake Michigan looks way bigger than this sphere, but you have to try to imagine a bubble almost 56km high—whereas the average depth of Lake Michigan is less than 91 meters.

The average person needs a minimum of 5 litres of water per day to survive in a moderate climate at an average activity level. The average person in the United States uses between 250 to 300 litres of water per day for drinking, cooking, bathing, and watering their yard. The average person in the Netherlands uses only 104 litres per day for the same tasks. The average person in the African nation of Gambia uses only 4.5 litres of water per day. THIS LEGISLATION IS A VERY SMALL ATTEMPT AT TRYING TO CHANGE THE SITUATION.THERE WOULD BE MORE LEGISLATION COMING.

We need to adapt and accept these changes gladly so that we, our children, our legacy have a chance to enjoy this Third Rock

SUSTAINABILITYDefine sustainable:

Big word – what does it mean for us and the client.DESIGNING BUILDINGS AND CONSTRUCTING THEM IN SUCH A WAY THAT THESE

BUILDINGS WOULD CONSERVE THE NATURAL RESOURSES THAT WE CURRENTLY HAVE AND / OR ACTUALLY REVERSE THE DEPLETION OF THESE RESOURCES. YES THIS COULD COST THE CLIENT MORE MONIES INITIALLY. WE NEED TO EDUCATE THEM ABOUT THIS.

FROM A COSTING POINT OF VIEW CONSIDER ROOF INSULATION, HEAT PUMP OR SIMILAR, SHADING, THERMAL BREAK ALUMINIUN OR TIMBER ETC.

WE NEED TO REMEMBER THAT THESE EXTRA COSTS INVOLVED WOULD ACTUALLY IMPROVED ON A BUILDINGS PERFORMANCE & WOULD THERFORE BE A GOOD THING

FOR YOU CLIENT.

1.Able to be maintained at a certain rate or level.2.(esp. of development, exploitation, or agriculture) Conserving an ecological balance by avoiding depletion of natural resources.

WHAT CAN WE DOA plea from all of humanity and Mother Earth. Let us make this change happily.

Let us not fight the law – it’s for the best.

We could fight the interpretation by the Local Authorities if we believe it’s wrongWe as Architectural Professionals need to be more professional and consider the impacts our

designs are going to have on our future, the clients requirements needs to be balanced with all Legal requirements and SUSTAINABILITY.

HAVE WE TAKEN RESPONSIBILITY FOR OUR WORK?GOING FORWARD WE NEED TO TAKE THIS RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE THE BUILDINGS, ENVIRONMENT & THE EARTH SUSTAINABLE. THESE LAWS ARE

FORCING US TO TAKE THE RESPONSIBILITY. I WOULD ACTUALLY ENCOURAGE STRICTER REGULATIONS. WE ALL SHOULD BE DRIVING THIS CHANGE FOR A
