natural/hybrid ventilation

• A fabric first approach, where the

building fabric is the primary means of

controlling the internal environment

that perform better than ones with

complex M&E systems and bolt-on

technological features

• Multi-disciplinary integrated approach

essential from day 1, particularly

environmental engineer and architect

working together but also early advice

on ICT and Acoustics

• It is important to get the design right

at an early stage

• Providing daylight into circulation

areas and rear of classrooms

• Achieving GIFA - matching the

Schedule of Accommodation is a

challenge

• Efficiency of circulation is a big

challenge as are limitations on

space for servers and plant

• Is the indoor environment, daylight,

lighting, heating and ventilation

easily controllable locally by the

building users

• FM and environmental design

• Very few derogations, or better No

derogations

Lessons Learnt

• Standardised approaches to plant and

services, eg strategy for routing services,

risers, service cores, etc

• Standardised solutions for façade, ventilation

and lighting solutions

• However too much standardisation can

severely compromise quality so a portfolio of

solutions may work best. Flexibility of material

and forms.

• Can offsite manufacturing speed up delivery

and improve quality?

• Windows and louvers

• Metering and monitoring

• Local control strategy

• FM and asset renewal strategies

• Shading devices
