AnoutlineofStevie’sspeechisonthenextpagetoshowyouhowhemighthaveoutlinedhisspeech.Hisisnottheperfectspeech,sodonotfeellikeyouneedtofollowhismodelexactly.
ASelf‐IntroductionSpeechOutlinetemplate,whichyoucanusetooutlineyourspeech,isonthetwopagesafterStevie’soutline.
Toprepareyourspeech,simplycompletethefollowingsteps.
Step1:ThinkuptopicsBrainstormtopicsaboutyourself(family,hobbies,travels,interests,jobs,classesyoulike,booksyouhaveread,careergoals,etc.).Choose3–4topics.
Step2:CreateanoutlineAskyourbrainquestionsaboutthetopics(who,what,where,when,why,how,towhatextent)andprepare7–9detailstogowitheachtopic.YoucanusethetemplateonthepageafterStevie’soutlinetoorganizeyourspeech.
Step3:CreateaconclusionRestateyourtopics.Decidewhichofthemismostimportanttoyou,andexplainwhy.Decidehowtoendyourspeechwithabang.
Step4:CreateanintroductionAdramaticopenerishelpfultogetyouraudience’sattention.Itcanbeaquote,question,orinterestingfact.Ajokeworksaswell.Thenoutlinesomebackgroundinformation(name,age,generalinterestitems)andlistthethreeorfourtopicsyouhavechosen.
Step5:WriteortypetheoutlineWriteortypeyouroutlineinlargeenoughtypesoyoucanreaditeasily.Havelotsofbulletpoints.Ifyouhavelonglinesoftext,youwillloseyourplace!Youcanusemorethanonesheetofpaperifyouneedto.Donotwriteoutyourspeechasyouwouldgiveit—onlymakeanoutline.
Step5:Practice!Practicegivingyourspeech.Useakitchentimertotimeyourspeech.Itshouldbe4–5minuteslong.Ifyourspeechistoolong,youwillneedtoleavesomethingsout.Ifyourspeechistooshort(morecommon),youwilllikelyneedtospeakmoreslowlyandfleshoutsomeofyourtopicsabitmore.
