Agricultural Research in Africa

• Research investment of millions of dollars in the past 3 decades

• Continued limited access to the world’s published knowledge resulting in:– Duplication of efforts– Limits in innovation – Diminished return on investment

Page 4: Introduction-To NEW TEEAL

Institution Libraries

• Journals have become expensive and inaccessible to the scientist

• Subscriptions increase at an annual rate of 11 -16%, which is beyond the reach of many institutions in Africa

• Most institutions have small, older and incomplete collections

Page 5: Introduction-To NEW TEEAL

What is Needed• Scientists must have access to the world’s

most important scholarly science journals• The most up-to-date knowledge is found in

scholarly journals• Institutions must have a critical mass of

journals • The journals MUST be affordable• Offline access to literature is still necessary

for some institutions

Page 6: Introduction-To NEW TEEAL

Why TEEAL• Publishers available on the Internet for free could

charge in future; if institutions cannot pay, access to all issues, past and future, ceases

• TEEAL ownership guarantees access to past issues even if future updates cannot be purchased

• TEEAL is an asset that can be kept whilst one can access the Internet they do not own it

• Faster to access than a document on Internet• With Internet, sometimes unreliable data

communication links• TEEAL is not prone to bandwidth problems

Page 7: Introduction-To NEW TEEAL

• Crops: crop production, sustainable systems, plant diseases, tropical plants

• Animals: dairy and livestock farming, animal nutrition

• Human Nutrition: human diet, nutrition and health• Environment: natural resources, forestry and the

environment• Economics: rural demographics and agricultural

economics

Choose your articles from a list of search results

Your results are displayed in a list of citations. Each citation gives you key information, such as article title, author, journal, and a snippet of the abstract. You can open the full citation for more details or go straight to the article.
