BEHC CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

MATHEMATICSMath Diagnostic Tests: Placement tests are required for all students new to BEHC math classes. There is not a specific passing score on these math placement tests. The tests are intended to provide information about a student’s skills so that a student can either work on the skills necessary to excel in a given class or he/she can take a class at a lower level than he/she had planned to solidify his/her math skills for future courses and testing. The purpose of a placement test is not to pass or to fail a student. They are to give the instructor a realistic view of the student’s strengths and weaknesses so that the student can successfully complete the appropriate math class.

Parental Involvement: All math classes require students to complete daily math lessons. All work must be shown. Students should expect to complete at least an hour to an hour and a half a day of work. Parents should verify that their students are completing and checking their daily work and then initializing it to verify that they have done so. Parents do not need to understand the work; they just need to be involved in the process, so they will know if their student is having difficulty. Students must keep up with class work or risk being dropped from the class, unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Note: If considering college, all students are required to take Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 and a 4th math of choice.

Middle School Math FoundationsInstructor – Anthony HallbergTuition: $3751 CreditGrades 7-8Course Description:  Prior to learning algebra, most students need more review of things like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and especially division which is then used with fractions, decimals and percentages. Fluency in these areas will almost guarantee a smooth transition to Algebra 1. This course is designed to solidify the framework of math before transitioning to the abstract concepts associated with algebra.  Students will then be introduced to algebraic processes such as arithmetic calculation, measurements, and geometry while new concepts such as pre-algebra, ratios, probability and statistics are introduced as preparation for upper level mathematics. Class time will be interactive with strong student participation encouraged. Assignments will include practice problems, reviews, fluency drills, quizzes/tests, and games on occasion. Internet links or interactive online activities may also be assigned for further reinforcement.

SAT/ACT Math/Prep Course

It can be taken in the Fall or Spring semester or both. Grades 10-12Course Description: The SAT/ACT Math Prep Course covers the mathematics concepts, problem solving strategies, and tips necessary to prepare students to take these tests with greater competence and confidence.  Each class will consist of a lecture/discussion followed by time for students to apply what they have learned to SAT/ACT style questions, including reviewing the assigned weekly practice test completed at home by the student the week prior.

Pre-requisite: Students must have completed one semester of Geometry (or be currently enrolled) and have a solid foundation in Algebra 1 to be prepared for this class.

Parental Involvement: The parents MUST see that each week the homework is completed. Final class results are DIRECTLY proportional to the student’s commitment to work at home between classes. The success to SAT/ACT preparation is practice so we encourage students to repeat this course if necessary to improve their skills.

Required Materials: The SAT/ACT Preparatory books are constantly revised. The teacher will select the book and edition prior to the start of the course. Only one book is needed for both Math and English Prep.

PERT Math PreparationInstructor: Carmen BeharTuition: $2001 Semester CourseMath/Elective Credit 0.5(Coupled with SAT Math Prep equivalent to Math for College Readiness 1.0 Credit)

High School Grades 9-12

This one semester course will cover 27 topics on the PERT examination in preparation for entrance into the dual enrollment program. This course teaches the concepts that are specifically on the exam. Students will have web based homework and worksheets on the topics presented in class. Success will depend on students completing the homework assignments. Students who achieve an 80% or better on each skill strand and on three practice tests will be ready to take the Math portion of the PERT examination. This course is recommended for high achieving math students who are motivated and equipped to enter college early.

By learning and exploring the intricacies of the human body, students will develop a deeper understanding of how God fearfully and wonderfully created humans in His image. Because anatomy and physiology is best learned through hands-on activities, this course will be largely comprised of demonstrations, labs, and dissections. Lectures, group discussions, and group games will also be included during scheduled enrichment time. After completion of this course, students will be more than ready to take college level anatomy and physiology courses. If the student completes the assigned work to the instructor’s satisfaction, this course should be recorded as one Honors Anatomy and Physiology with Lab credit.

Biology – Lecture and Lab (Honors Option)Instructor: Cara Abbott (cjabbott2014@gmail.com)Tuition: $400 + $75 lab fee1 Credit plus labGrade 10-12Course description: This high school course presents a comprehensive overview of the Science of Life.  Starting with the amazing balance of physical conditions for life on earth, students learn about the organization of life from the basic unit, the cell, to the interaction of species within ecosystems, giving emphasis to the vocabulary and physiology of biology. Using a young-earth Creation-based approach, the course begins with a general survey of the chemistry of life, basic physical properties in life processes, and the essentials of cell biology.  The students learn about the cell by looking at various organisms in the Kingdoms Monera and Protista.  An introduction to the fundamentals of genetics allows students to grasp the Creator’s amazing variation and biodiversity in His creation.Functional tissues and organ systems as well as reproductive cycles will be studied in depth in fungi, plants, and animals lead to the classification of organismal groups.  These concepts will be reinforced at BEHC through a variety of dissections, models and microscope labs. Interactions between species, populations, and communities of organisms will be explored in the topic of ecology.  With the foundational knowledge of classification by systems and ecological interactions, students will examine the controversy of the interpretation of scientific evidence leading to theories in macro- and microevolution. Students may complete Biology with Lab for regular credit or for honors credit. Course Description: Chemistry with Lab is based on systematic laboratory investigations of matter, chemical reactions, and the role of energy in those reactions. This course is designed to be a first-year high school introduction to chemistry, giving students a thorough foundation in comparing, contrasting, and synthesizing useful models of the structure and properties of matter and the mechanisms of interactions. It is designed to prepare students for college-level course work both in the sciences as well as in study habits and test-taking skills.

Students may complete Chemistry with Lab for regular credit or for honors credit. Honors credit will require additional, slightly more difficult assignments and a higher level of examination.

Prerequisites: Algebra 1

Parental Involvement:  Parents remain the primary teachers and will be required to make sure the assigned reading and activities are completed weekly. It is essential that parents maintain a check on their students work in order for the student not to fall behind in his or her work. During class, each week’s assignment will be reviewed.  Students should plan on spending approximately 45 to 60 minutes per day on outside work.

SCIENCE (MIDDLE SCHOOL)

Course Description: Designed for 7th and 8th grade, this science lab course is a true enrichment class.  Students investigate science topics across a broad spectrum of disciplines to introduce them to God’s creative expression.  The primary instruction method is through hands-on activities and concrete demonstrations. Students are introduced to the basic vocabulary and fundamental concepts of topics covering the building blocks of chemistry, physical forces governing nature, the geology of the earth, essential units of life, exchange of energy for life, and concluding with a very rudimentary overview of the systems of the human body.  The first goal of this course is to lay a solid foundation of conceptual understanding of primary scientific principles of Physical Science and Biology, so students experience a smooth transition into high school science.  The second goal is quite plainly to have a lot of fun with science!

Course Description: This 7th grade science enrichment course provides a basic scientific foundation for earth science, life science, physical science, and the human body. By creating a fun learning atmosphere with a focus on hands-on activities, experiments, and demonstrations, students will increase their appreciation of God’s wonderful creation. The various topics covered include: new and current technology being developed in science, earthquakes and volcanoes, weathering and erosion, natural resources, astronomy, earth and space, cells and classification systems, reproduction and genetics, atoms and molecules, electricity and magnetism, motion and machines, and nervous and immune systems. During the enrichment time, hands-on instructional tools such as demonstrations, labs, group discussions and games will be utilized. This enrichment course will surely result in students learning a great deal of science, all while having lots of fun along the way!

World History – Ancient Worlds to Present (Honors Option) Instructor- Kelly Fifelski (fifebunch@yahoo.com) Tuition: $375 1 Credit Grades 10-12 Course Description:  It will help students develop a Christian worldview while forming his or her own understanding of world history trends, philosophies and events. The following components are covered for the student: critical thinking, examinations of historical theories, terms and concepts, overviews and insights into world views. This course will challenge the student to truly understand historical concepts and events rather than memorizing the information. The student text has 34 chapters. Each chapter contains four weekly lessons which take 20-30 minutes each. The daily lessons are short readings followed by critical thinking questions. An exam is issued weekly for each chapter.

Beginning with the four types of writing (Descriptive, Persuasive, Expository, and Narrative), students will learn how to write in a variety of formats to express a range of meaning. Initially, the students will begin with the elements of a well-structured paragraph and the development of clear solid thesis statements. They will then quickly progress towards the mastery of an multi paragraph essay writing. Basic grammar and punctuation will be needed. High school students who are eager to learn how become better wordsmiths and practice public speaking will benefit from this class. Students will also be working on the skill of impromptu writing, notetaking, creative writing, peer writing and peer editing. By the end of the year, students should be able to command the use of evidence in their writing, break down a writing prompt, write a multiple paragraph essay, while improving overall sentence structure. In this course, students will use their creativity and teamwork to design, create, and build full-fledged LEGO® robots that are programmed to complete tasks by using computers.Each class will promote experiences in critical and creative thinking in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (S.T.E.M.) areas using LEGO® in an interactive, hands-on way. The students will program the robots that they build using diverse sensors to perform mission tasks, and learn all about the science concepts and technology used in the field of robotics.While learning about engineering and robotics applications, the students will develop critical and higher-level thinking skills to solve problems by working cooperatively to plan, construct, and complete missions. They will learn how to make fondant and properly knead the fondant and cover a cake in fondant. Sanitation and proper food handling of baked goods will be emphasized. There will be quizzes and a written paper. The tests will cover course work on nutrition, the science of baking, health/sanitation, and have baking and decorating practical exams. The most essential elements to this class are nutrition and sanitation. They will not only gain an understanding of various foods’ nutritional value but also the importance of food safety. Students will learn food temperature, food handling and the different bacteria that can be found in food if not handled properly. In order for students to efficiently cook, they will be trained how to properly use kitchen equipment and hopefully master basic knife skills. Like Speech and Debate 1, this course provides weekly opportunities in public speaking in the fall, and debate in the spring, but raises the bar in significant ways. Students will be challenged to deliver lengthier speeches, memorize and deliver some speeches verbatim, and research their debate topics more thoroughly from the ground up. Students will be visited by friends of mine who will testify of the importance of public speaking experience in their careers.
