Bolero BL - Intro - 1 Introduction to Bolero General Information - Bolero is in the Latin-American section of ballroom and round dancing. Bolero as a dance is actually a marriage of many influences - Standard Ballroom, Rumba, and Ballet - but it is not dominated by any of these root rhythms. The dance is characterized by a strong rise and fall action in the basic figures. The maximum rise is on the downbeat (slow) step but this rise is achieved with the use of the body and not the foot and ankle. Musical Timing - The time signature for the Bolero is 4/4, with a normal tempo range of 22 - 28 bars (measures) per minute. Normally we take three steps to each measure of music. The rhythm we normally interpreted as slow-quick- quick in the basic figures. Footwork - Most of the steps are taken with a ball/flat action as in most other Latin dances. There are exceptions to the ball/flat rule and will be listed in the charted figures. Dance Positions - Most of the dance positions used in the Bolero are the same as those used in the Latin dances with the exception of the closed position. The Closed Dance Position used in Bolero is similar to the standard (Waltz) position but it is slightly modified with the lady offset to the right at a slight angle. Hand and Arm Positions - The hand and arm positions used in Bolero are usually the same as those used in the other Latin dances. The use of the arms in Bolero is more of a blend of ballet and Rumba and appears to be very soft in action. Turning Actions - The turns in Bolero combine the turns of Latin and standard turns. In Closed Position we usually use the standard dance turn action e.g. slips. In any Open Position we normally use a Latin turn action e.g. spot turns.

Introduction to Bolero

General Information - Bolero is in the Latin-American section of ballroom

and round dancing.

Musical Timing - The time signature for the Bolero is 4/4, with a normal

tempo range of 22 - 28 bars (measures) per minute. Normally we take three steps to each measure of music. The rhythm we normally interpreted as slow-quick-quick in the basic figures.

Footwork - Most of the steps are taken with a ball/flat action as in most other

Latin dances. There are exceptions to the ball/flat rule and will be listed in the charted figures.

Dance Positions - Most of the dance positions used in the Bolero are the

same as those used in the Latin dances with the exception of the closed position. The Closed Dance Position used in Bolero is similar to the standard (Waltz) position but it is slightly modified with the lady offset to the right at a slight angle.

Hand and Arm Positions - The hand and arm positions used in Bolero are

usually the same as those used in the other Latin dances. The use of the arms in Bolero is more of a blend of ballet and Rumba and appears to be very soft in action.

Turning Actions - The turns in Bolero combine the turns of Latin and

standard turns. In Closed Position we usually use the standard dance turn action e.g. slips. In any Open Position we normally use a Latin turn action e.g. spot turns.
