Fisheries in the SW Baltic

• main species caught: cod, herring, sprat, plaice, turbot, sea trout, salmon and eel

• gear: active (mainly trawl) and static (mainly nets) • small-scale fisheries - normally in limited areas and

sometimes on a stationary basis (mostly fixed net fisheries) • other forms of fisheries – flexiblle, can be conducted over

larger areas (mostly trawl fisheries)

Fisheries in space

• Shared resource moving across borders • Spatially and temporally dynamic resource – variation by

season, species, lifecycle stage, trophic connectivity, environmental change

• Transboundary and spatially dynamic activity – variation according to resource availability and method

• Regulated through national legislation and the Common Fisheries Policy, including spatial regulations

A future space for fisheries

• Increased competition from other activities • Flexibility in plan required to accomodate spatially

dynamic resource and activity

• new fish habitats • new target species > new fishing grounds? • new methods
