EF is the percentage of power within a given fiber core radius when

light is launched by a transmitter into a multimode fibre.

Why does it matter?

• Insertion Loss in multimode fiber is a

function of Modal Launch Conditions

• Insertion Loss measurements taken

with “underfilled” launch conditions can

lead to optimistic results.
