• An individual 2500-word essay on the following topic:
The industrial revolution caused huge changes to society and to architecture and, during this time number of new architectural typologies emerged including the railway station, the factory and new types of civic and institutional building. It could be argued that we are living through an equally transformative time in history – an information revolution.
Despite significant changes to society in the western world we are only just beginning to see significant changes to architecture and wholly new building typologies have yet to emerge. The British library have recently faced the challenge that in order to acquire funding for and validate their plans for a new building they also have to reinvent themselves as a new type of institution.
In this essay I want you to imagine a new building typology fit for the digital age in a post library world. You might take as inspiration Otlet’s imagining of the Mundeneum but feel free to speculate about the what this building typology this might be.
