The Wailers (1962-1972) INTRODUCTION Like any Wailers fan, after acquiring the regular Island recordings, I aimed for the 1962-1972 material. But I was somehow lost in the quantity of material available on the market. This is how I got involved, in 2001, in this never ending project. At first, it was only a personal list of songs with the year they were recorded. But then I added the singles, the remixes... and the project just kept on growing bigger and bigger. As I spent over a thousand hours on this research, it made no sense to keep this list private, so I decided to share it with all the Wailers fans around the world. This list can never be consider finish, as new information always surface. Just in automn 2004, two major books were published, revealing tons of crucial information. These books are The Definitive Discography (by Roger Steffens and Leroy Jodie Pierson) and His Musical Legacy (by Jeremy Collingwood). So far, I haven’t got the time to check my list with these books. Many additional information can be found if you purchase them. My intention is not to compete with these books, but to give an alphabetical list of songs recorded between 1962 and 1972, along with their versions, dubplates, remixes and overdubs. To the best of my knowledge, this list to includes all the studio songs and their versions. I made my best to include all the overdubs, remixes and dubplates, but some may remain unknown to me. Some demo songs from the JAD recording sessions seems to be kept aside for further releases, a impressive list of unknown titles have been registered in the Caymen Music Catalogue and can be found at page 165 in the book The Definitive Discography. English being my second language, please excuse my grammatical mistakes. I will try to included a revised version of this list on my webpage at least once a year. The original tapes were taken to New York City, to Harry Belafonte’s studio, where arranger-producers like ArthurJenkins and Joe Venneri often added soul strings, horns and other instruments with some of the best studio musicians of the time, many of them from the Aretha Franklin’s band. As the radio stations nevergave much airplay to the single BEND DOWN LOW/MELLOW MOOD, no other singles were released.NOTE: It’s interesting to notice that the song BEND DOWN LOW is longer on the JAD Canadian and French singles compare to the WIRL single. The song MELLOW MOOD is shorter on the JAD Canadian andFrench singles compare to the WIRL single. Weird.NOTE: this song was not recorded twice for JAD, as the book The Definitive Discography may suggest. The session NICE TIME, SOUL ALMIGHTY and BEND DOWN LOW (page 31) is a mistake. NICE TIME andBEND DOWN LOW were only recorded one time (see page 33 of the book for correct information). The song SOUL ALMIGHTY was not recorded for JAD, but only for Lee Perry in 1970. It is true that JADmade a remix of the song in 1988, which was also included on the 1996 CD: Soul Almighty – The Formative Years.NOTE: The song was previously recorded by The Wailers in 1966 and will also be re-recorded in 1974 for the Natty Dread album. Apparently, the song was also recorded with Lee Perry in November 1976,during the same session that brought us JAH LIVE and SMILE JAMAICA.This last take is still unreleased. (GK1213)NOTE: the sleeve of the JAD CD single Kaya states that ROCK TO THE ROCK was recorded in February 1968.
