Introduction of Fans and Blowers
Fans and Blowers use air for ventilation and
industrial process requirements. It generates
pressure to move air through ducts, dampers and
other components of the fan system.
Dierence of Fans and blowers
Fan is mechanical device is used to create a
continuous ow of air through the system. In any
cooling system which uses gas such as air as itsmain uid, fan is a compulsory unit for the system.
hen higher pressure is required, blowers are used
instead of fans.
!"#$ dierentiated fans blowers and air
compressor by getting the speci%c ration of
discharging pressure over suction pressure.
Fan &aws
'here are several fan laws that shows the
relationship between pressure, capacity, speed,
and power. "ome of the most useful fan laws are(
).*apacity directly proportional to speed+.ressure directly proportional to speed+

*entrifugal Fan
!lso nown as squirrel cage for it resembles to ane/ercise cage of a squirrel. It produces air ow in
radial0 or perpendicular 1 direction relative to the
shaft. *entrifugal Fans are used in many industrial
processes and in air pollution control system.
*entrifugal fans are used in many industrial
processes because they are able to produce large
increases in air pressure. 'hey are often used in
grain drying and greenhouse ventilation. 'hese are
also common in air pollution control system as well
as 23!*.
!le/ander "abluov, )4-+ a 5ussian &ieutenant
6eneral discovered and contributed a lot to the
invention of centrifugal Fan.
!ir compressor
is anything that increases the amount of air that is
contained within a particular space. By pacing inthe air, the air pressure is increased.

'he %rst air compressor was not a machine but it
was our lungs. 7ur ancestors made use of their
lungs by creating %re through blowing.
!s people began to melt metals a more powerful
compressor was required.
$gyptians and "umerian metallurgist %rst used
wind, then blowpipes for their wor. 'he %rst
mechanical compressor, was the hand0operated
bellows. !fter )899B.*. more e:cient foot bellows
came into use.
*tesibius. Discovered the elasticity of air and
invention of several devices using compressed air,
including force pumps and an air0powered catapult.
2eron designed and automatic temple door
opener, which used heat and pneumatics to open aset of temple doors.

severely limited the utility of these primitive
devices. ith the industrial revolution, the
mechanical compressor was born.
Due to the poor e:ciency of the early a/ial
compressors, papers in )>+9?s said that a practical
@et engine would be impossible to construct.
'hings changed after !lan !rnold 6ri:n published
a seminal paper noting that the reason because of
the e/isting compressors used at blades and were
essentially ying stalled.
Flying stalledA reduction in the life coe:cient
generated by a foil as angle of attac increases.
2e showed that the use of airfoils instead of at
blades would increase e:ciency to the point where
a practical @et was a possibility.
!ir *ompressor
Is a device that converts power using an electric
motor, diesel or gasoline engine, etc.C into
potential energy stored in pressuried air.
