Right now, nearly one in every three pickups bought in the UK is a Mitsubishi. That’s because the L200 is simply perfect for our roads.

It is neat and nimble, grippy and keen into the bends, with the tightest turning circle of any truck and an even smoother, quieter ride than its predecessor, despite the heavy duty suspension required for its day job.

It boasts a refined and efficient WLTP-compliant Auto Stop & Go engine, hooked up to a six-speed gearbox. And, even after all these years, the high end models* are extraordinary, allowing you to opt for either two or four-wheel drive on any roads, and to shift on-the-fly at will. Courtesy of Mitsubishi’s renowned Super Select system, this provides the choice of better grip when you need it and better economy when you don’t, backed by Trailer Stability Assist, makes these the perfect pickups for towing with.

But pickups are about packing, as well as pulling, and the L200’s packhorse legendary capabilities are now even greater than ever before, with total load capacities ranging from 3960kg to 4125kg, depending upon the model.

TOWING CAPACITY**

Off-road, Mitsubishi has long provided the masterclass. Highly manoeuvrable, with a relatively light chassis and highly regarded 4WD systems, traction is simply never in question. Indeed, the L200 is spider-like over the steepest terrain, climbing seemingly impossible angles with ease.

This admirable ability when the going gets tough has been honed in some of the most arduous conditions on earth and, at heart, it is down to two iconic drivetrains. The Easy Select system, in operation on 4Life models, features 2WD for tarmac, two 4WD modes and a rear differential lock, ensuring traction even on sand, mud or rocky surfaces; on all other models the Super Select system automatically locks the centre differential when in the off-road modes. On Barbarian models, these locked settings are now further enhanced by an off-road mode selection option to optimise engine output, transmission and braking in various conditions - gravel, mud/snow, sand or rock - and are complimented by the newly introduced Hill Descent Control. And on the Barbarian X a 360° camera system provides a bird’s eye view, helping to spot the safest path from the comfort of your cab.

Maximising space has always been a Mitsubishi strong point and, despite its relatively compact size, the L200’s cabin provides better legroom than any other cab in the class. The seats are better too. Drivers find their position car-like, sitting down snuggly instead of in the traditional pick-up perch. Double Cab rear seat passengers are cosseted with a 25° reclined seat-back and great headroom, making this their pick of the pick-ups too. And everyone benefits from the excellent sound insulation: combined with the naturally quiet engine, this latest L200 cruises noticeably more quietly than its peers.

You might choose the L200 for its ride alone; but then again, you might pick it for its class.That’s because it exhibits the perfect balance between practical, durable materials and ‘carlike’ refinement. And, depending upon the model, the L200’s list of standard kit reads more like that of a top-end saloon: central locking with keyless entry, electric windows to both front and rear, electric heated door mirrors for optimum vision whatever the weather, leather heated seats and dual zone climate control air conditioning. There is enormous attention to detail too: privacy glass, rain and dusk sensors, a Bluetooth®** hands free ’phone connection and a good sound system with steering wheel remote control.

In 40 years of production the L200 has frequently set the benchmark,and never more so than in matters of safety.It was the very first pickup to feature a traction control system, an active safety feature that works alongside innovations like ABS with EBD (which adjusts the level of braking power applied between the front and rear wheels, depending upon the load), Brake Assist, and the Emergency Stop signal System which automatically alerts other drivers to a hazardous situation.

Now, L200 features like the Lane Departure Warning system, Forward Collision Mitigation (which warns of an imminent collision), Blind Spot Warning (a real boon for motorway driving), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (equally as useful when reversing) and the clever Ultrasonic mis-acceleration Mitigation System are the new yardstick in pickup world. Mitsubishi’s L200 Series 6 may not be the biggest truck around. And it is certainly not the most expensive.
