Editor’s note
By now you’ve probably heard the buzz about Charlie Parker: Coronation’s new development in Harris Park. We wanted to give you a glimpse inside this exciting new place to call home, so we thought, who better to speak to than the man himself? After all, Charlie Parker isn’t just the name of this new building, it’s the moniker of its persona too: a cool character that’s half man and half elephant. Lucky for us, he’s agreed to step into the Editor’s chair for this one-of-a-kind magazine – sharing the vision for his new home, and taking us for a wander around the neighbourhood.
“Greetings, friends – delighted to make your acquaintance!
It’s always nice to come across like-minded souls who appreciate all the good things in life, like creativity, culture, and of course, a little jazz. While I might have an unusual face, I definitely have a nose for great art, design and nature – and I’m excited to combine all these wonderful, enriching topics within the pages of this magazine.
Located on the corners of Charles and Parkes Streets, the Charlie Parker development is aptly named – and it’s also set to bring something very special to the streets of Harris Park. More than just an apartment building, Charlie Parker will be a fusion of classic art deco sophistication, and top-notch modern style; the perfect place to hang your hat in Western Sydney.
While it’s a Coronation Property, my glorious new home has been a true collaborative effort between a group of creative superstars: from the world-class architects at fjmt, to renowned designers Jamie Durie and Shannon Vos. Oh, and let’s not forget my artistic creators, Gillie & Marc, and their artistic sidekicks, Elliot Routledge (Numskull) and Shannon Crees. Together this group of incredible talents have made Charlie Parker a place that will redefine the Parramatta landscape – not to mention the lives of the lucky souls who live there.
But enough of my meanderings – let’s get this show on the road! I hope you love what you find inside as much as we’ve loved creating it.”
Fond regards,
Charlie Parker, Editor-in-Chief

Behind Charlie Parker’s grand architectural vision is Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp (fjmt): a multi-disciplinary design firm with studios in Australia and the United Kingdom. Known for their commitment to enhancing public domain, fjmt have achieved global acclaim for creating spaces that are beautiful, inspiring and reflective of the community’s values and aspirations. While Charlie Parker certainly isn’t the first collaboration between fjmt and Coronation, it’s one of the most exciting – and Principal Johnathan Redman was kind enough to talk to us about the journey so far.
fjmt is renowned for bringing new dimensions to public space. How do you go about doing this? At fjmt, we treat every one of our projects as a public space – this approach is in our DNA. In the last decade or so, we’ve noticed that private residential and commercial clients are sharing this
outlook; wanting to create buildings that enhance the occupant experience, but also contribute to the creation of the city for the greater public. Designing a building like Charlie Parker, that accommodates multiple uses, fits naturally with our ethos to enrich public and private experience simultaneously.
When you saw the site for Charlie Parker, what potential did you see? Located on the city fringe of Parramatta, the site is in a great spot. It’s within walking distance of Parramatta CBD, which means all that liveliness and choice is on your doorstep – plus you’re in close proximity to public transport. Harris Park itself also has a particular flavour and character, and with low-rise residential suburbs surrounding the site, we saw scope for great views to the east and south that will be preserved for the long term.
“Charlie Parker represents a fusion of scales, geometries, community and culture… It is a truly modern building that
draws on the environmental and cultural strengths of the site.”
A soaring sculptural tower with soft curves, Charlie Parker is a design statement that fuses contemporary elegance with classic art deco style.
Words by Johnathan Redman interviewed by Emma Heath
Through the looking glass
Can you describe the design solution you ultimately arrived at? The building was inspired by the site: its position on the edge of the CBD, its geometry, and the way it relates to the vibrant Harris Park community. We knew we needed to achieve a form that worked at both a city scale, and a street level human scale – and the result was this airy, curving tower.
Charlie Parker has quite an art deco feel – why did you embrace this style?Charlie Parker represents a fusion of scales, geometries, community and culture. Back in the 1920s, the art deco era saw a similar type of fusion take place – combining modernism with fine craftsmanship and rich materials. It is a truly modern building that draws on the environmental and cultural strengths of the site.
What are some of the exterior features that will make Charlie Parker stand out?Charlie Parker’s tower is bold and distinctive yet softened by curves – creating a contemporary, streamlined design reminiscent of early 20th century modern architecture. Extensive glass has been used to create a sense of light and space, while brickwork wraps around to form a ‘cradle’ which supports the tower. On the building’s south side, the relaxed formal architecture creates a relationship to the neighbouring buildings, and the entrance is elevated off the street to invite visitors inside.
It’s worth noting that the vision we have arrived at did evolve over time; and it was the result of collaboration between ourselves, the Coronation team, and several other creative partners. There’s nothing quite like Charlie Parker in the area in terms of quality.

Residents will feel as though they’re floating in the sky.
Tell us a little about the interiors – what will they be like? The interiors have been designed to emphasise the natural light and sense of space created by full height curved glass, which wraps each apartment. We’ve carried the building’s contemporary fusion theme into the foyer, lobbies and apartments – think herringbone tiles, brass trimmings and handrails, and warm timber tones. As well as 111 residences, Charlie Parker will also offer a private residents lounge and a beautifully landscaped open-air pool with connecting wellness space and fully equipped gymnasium.
Finally, what kind of lives do you think people who live at Charlie Parker will lead? With their natural sense of light and space, I think that these apartments will provide sanctuary from the hustle and bustle below – and with all the curved glass, residents will feel as though they’re floating in the sky.
I also believe that the building will foster a community of residents who appreciate good design and diverse cultural experiences, and who share a sense of ownership and belonging in this special place.

Architecture & Design
Charlie Parker is a unique and classy individual, and these prestige residences are no different. With premium finishes and fixtures, these ‘beauties’ offer refined luxury with plenty of character. Like an aged wine, these homes have subtle notes of playfulness and whim throughout, built upon excellent workmanship and the best in planning and design.
At Vos Creative, we recognise all that is unique about Charlie Parker and we have endeavoured to highlight the building’s beauty and pay homage to its strengths.
The team at Vos Creative wanted to show you two distinct versions of styling and fitting the one gorgeous interior scheme. These two ‘looks’ compliment the premium selections made by the architects at fjmt, and playfully interact with the finishes, the carefully laid out floor plan, and the stunning aspect that is offered throughout the building. Though the two looks are vastly different, they both enable the bones of the design intent to shine.
Since rising to fame on Channel 9’s ‘The Block’, Shannon Vos has lent his interior design skills to several high-profile developments – including our very own Charlie Parker. Shannon gives us an insight
into the two distinctly different looks he’s created.

“Statement living room furniture has been carefully chosen to echo Charlie Parker’s
exterior; blending crisp modern lines with soft, inviting fabrics.
Delight is in the details Mindful that living spaces are for living, the GlobeWest apartment strikes a perfect balance between classic elegance and easy comfort – creating a place for creating, connecting or just curling up with a book.
Textural details with GlobeWest This colour palette, though subtly varied, is cohesive throughout and the furnishings used create a story throughout Charlie Parker that represent the artworks used, the Charlie Parker ethos and unique Australian design. Textures used compliment the hard surfaces in the apartment, and are varied enough to build depth into the space and bring life into the home.
Infused with plenty of colour, character and whimsical intrigue, the GlobeWest apartment has luxury in spades, with plenty of velvet, splashes of brass and a colour palette that is often found in some of the most stunning spaces in Australia.
“In the bedroom, it’s all about richly layered textures, from the gorgeous
upholstered bedheads, to woven rugs and cascades of cosy pillows.

“Pattern features strongly in this
design scheme – think tribal-inspired cushions, floor rugs with intricate detail, and ceramics that have a
distinctly hand-crafted feel.
“Nature is brought to life throughout
the apartment, with large-leafed indoor plants adding a sense of
freshness, and organic textures subtly woven into furnishings.
Where the living is easy Our HK Living apartment is all about effortless style. Furniture is low profile and unobtrusive, encouraging free, fluid movement between spaces; and soft lighting creates a warm mood. From leather ottomans to casually layered throws, every piece invites relaxation.
Raw luxury with HK LivingThe HK Living inspired home is a whole new world. Tribal trends, rustic timbers and plenty of natural textures take Charlie Parker into a dimension best described as ‘raw luxury’. It’s a highly considered space, with each item painstakingly contemplated to bring you the best version of this look possible. Again, drawing inspiration from the premium selections made by fjmt, the living space is a whimsical balance of the rawness of the organic against sleek classical-modern design. Sitting atop the fine finishes specified for the apartment are pops of canvas, rattan, cow hide and leather; the perfect antithesis to a luxurious palette. This balance of textures lends to a harmonious aesthetic and creates such a sense of vibrancy of life, it will be hard to live here without a constant smile on your face.
“Highly graphic artwork gives each
room a definite edge, providing striking focal points that draw the
eye immediately.

In between winning awards across the globe, writing best-selling books, hosting prime time design shows, and continuing his work as a committed environmentalist, Jamie somehow found time to collaborate on Charlie Parker. We talk to him about the role he played in – and what future residents can expect from this remarkable building.
These days, people are gravitating towards urban centres, whether it’s in Australia or overseas. Why do you think landscaping is so important in this context?
No matter where people are living, they want to be connected to nature in some way – it’s a basic need that we all have that needs to be acknowledged. What’s great is that now, landscaping is increasingly being considered early on in the design process, with architects and landscape designers collaborating from the concept stage. Rather than being an afterthought, nature is now being treated as a fundamental part of the design of urban developments, whether that means ‘green-ifying’ rooftops or increasing balcony space. It’s a great shift to see happening.
“No matter where people are living, they want to be connected to nature in some way – it’s a basic need that we all have that
needs to be acknowledged.”
While Jamie Durie first rose to fame as a landscape designer, this is just one string in his impressive bow of talents. Together with his team at Durie Design, Jamie now
collaborates with a range of partners to create high-end furniture designs that inspire a connection with nature.

Landscape Architecture
We’ve aimed to bring a natural energy to these
spaces; creating a vibrant living landscape that can be accessed and viewed
from every angle.
What are the challenges that come with bringing nature into urban areas? When you’re creating a vertical community, it can be challenging to connect people with nature in way that’s intelligent and sophisticated. There’s often not much space to work with, designs need to be considered from many different angles, and you need to assess things like maintenance, light and water use. What’s also important to recognise is that people can be connected to nature in many different ways – it’s never just about plants! Thanks to the materials we choose, our furniture designs can also give people a sense of the natural environment, even when they’re inside.
What were you aiming to achieve at Charlie Parker? Our team collaborated with Coronation and the architects fjmt on several areas of the building, from the mezzanine level right through to the pool area and balconies. We’ve aimed to bring a natural energy to these spaces; creating a vibrant living landscape that can be accessed and viewed from every angle. We’ve used a lot of soft grasses and foliage that the wind can move through, and integrated a connection to water. Light has been a consideration too – after all, we want nature to be something people can enjoy at any time of day or night. Together, we were able to deliver a very considered design that’s well incorporated into the structure of the building. Durie Design also created a range of furniture pieces that feature throughout the building, including some beautiful pool lounges and outdoor lounges.
Can you tell us a little more about your furniture? With all our pieces, we aim for a timeless design; something that could be in production for hundreds
of years to come. Choice of materials is hugely important; it has to be sustainably sourced, and have the functionality and level of luxury we’re used to today. And of course, each piece has to give people a sense of where it comes from. People are looking for products that have a story to tell, and have been touched by the human hand. It has to be accessible to many different people too; good design never discriminates.
You’ve developed a theory called ‘transterior living’. What is this all about, and how does it come to life at Charlie Parker?
Transterior living is really about taking the outdoors in, and the indoors out. It relates to both the exchange of materials between interior and exterior, and also the way we entice people to move through theses spaces through inviting architecture.
At Charlie Parker, the design seduces people into the outdoors, and natural elements are brought right into the home. It’s definitely an illustration on what transterior living can look like in an urban context; and how a natural connection can be present even in a multi-level space.

Home is where the art isFollowing in the footsteps of creative cities like London, Lisbon and Prague, Sydney is becoming an urban landscape that’s increasingly rich in street art. Thanks to Charlie Parker, this new wave is finding its way out west – with highly regarded artists like Elliott “Numskull” Routledge and Shannon Crees making their mark on Harris Park.
My creative process is both chaotic and
strategically planned… – Numskull aka Elliott Routledge
Shannon Crees & Elliott Routledge
When wild creative minds uniteDesigned to be a destination for creative types, Charlie Parker has art woven into its very fabric. To enhance its distinctive, art deco architecture, Coronation decided to engage a group of talented artists to make a collaborative contribution. The first of these were contemporary Sydney artists, Gillie and Marc, who created the Charlie Parker character: an iconic half man, half elephant sculpture that will ultimately live in the building itself.
Also invited to come and play: Numskull and Shannon Crees. These two artists have both earned a reputation for their graphic works, including murals that have brightened up public spaces across Australia and even beyond. At Charlie Parker, they have blended their very different styles with Gillie and Marc’s concept, creating a vibrant, large-scale painting that wraps the entire
site. Let’s take a little look at these two incredible artists and the journey that’s led them to Charlie Parker.
Elliott “Numskull” RoutledgeCharlie Parker certainly isn’t the first time Numskull has dabbled in collaborative creation. Since bursting onto the scene, he has worked with high profile brands such as Nike, Kiehls and Panasonic, and has completed commissions for the likes of City of Sydney and UTS. Over the years, Numskull has also taken his work far and wide, exhibiting in galleries and public spaces across London, Tokyo, Vienna, New York, Paris, Amsterdam and Hong Kong.
Numskull creates pieces that are bold, expressive and abstract, exploring the relationships that exist between colours and patterns. “My creative process is both chaotic and strategically planned,”

My artworks can be a reaction to my immediate
environment or an attempt to depict
the vivid landscape of my dreams.
– Shannon Crees
says Numskull. “If I’m painting a mural, I try to plan ahead of time as best I can, but every wall is different and has its own challenges and variables.” When it comes to working outside in public, he’s unfazed. “I’m used to it - I paint walls outside all the time, it’s a spectator sport,” he says.
Shannon CreesWhile she started out in fashion, it wasn’t long before Shannon Crees found her niche in the world of art. An accomplished artist who works across a range of media, Crees creates richly patterned, collaged pieces that flirt with surrealism and explosive colour. While she often works on canvas, Crees is no stranger to large-scale walls – having created murals both close to home (an 80sqm mural for Leichhardt Council was a highlight), and across the globe (everywhere from London to Dubai).
Over the course of her career, Shannon has garnered countless awards, and had her work displayed everywhere from the MCA to Sydney’s Town Hall. “My artworks can be a reaction to my immediate environment or an attempt to depict the vivid landscape of my dreams,” she explains. “I use pattern and bold colour to depict my interpretation of the things I find most beautiful. The philosophy might change but the motivation always remains a compulsion for colourful creation.”

Since they appeared on the Australian art scene in 1993, Gillie and Marc have gained a worldwide followingthankstotheirdistinctive‘hybrid’sculptures, and passion for public art. Known for their autobiographical characters, Dogman and Rabbitgirl, this duo is inspired by the powerful relationships that exist between humans and animals – and together, have created an entire world where conventions are challenged and love reigns supreme. The latest addition to their crew? Well,it’snoneotherthanCharlieParker.
He’s half elephant, half man, and all class. But where did Charlie Parker come from? “We were approached by Coronation when they were first developing their vision for Charlie Parker,” explains Gillie. “They had this wonderful idea about creating a character who’d embody everything this development stands for: creativity, self-expression and an appreciation of the finer things in life. We loved the concept, and from there, Charlie Parker was born.”

“People have always embraced public art as a way of sharing stories, right back to ancient times – and that’s certainly what we aim to do today.”
Words by Gillie and Marc interviewed by Emma Heath
With his (relatively) small ears, Charlie Parker is an Indian elephant – and this was no accident.“Harris Park has such a rich multicultural identity, including a strong Indian community, which we discovered when we explored the local area,” says Marc. “We wanted Charlie to have a connection to this heritage, which is why he’s an Indian elephant! He’s also a bit of a gentleman, with a great appreciation for style – as you can see from little details like his wristwatch and the paintbrushes in his pocket. Oh, and he loves animals… he even has a little bird friend who’s along for the ride.”
Playful and relatable, Charlie Parker reflects Gillie & Marc’s belief that public art should be something everyone can engage with.Having completed commissions for venues such as Australia Zoo, Sydney Children’s Hospital, and the Hilton Hotel Singapore, Gillie and Marc have shared their art with the public for many years. “We are huge advocates of public art. We feel that, if architecture is the body of a place, then art is the heart and soul. People have always embraced public art as a way of sharing stories, right back to ancient times – and that’s certainly what we aim to do today."
Free from the confines of a gallery, public art often takes on a life of its own.“What’s great about public art is that it can really have an interactive element and engage with the public,” says Marc. “It’s not intimidating; it’s clearly for everyone! We keep this in mind with our work; a lot of our pieces are at ground level so people can touch it, climb on it, take photos with it. Some of our pieces even get dressed up or yarn bombed, which we love!”
So now Charlie Parker has arrived, what can we expect to see from him?Visitors to Harris Park may have already seen evidence that Charlie is making himself at home, and if you’re lucky you may even bump into one of his friends! Once the building is complete, Charlie will occupy a prized position as part of the building. “Charlie Parker is definitely here to stay!” says Gillie.
