How Does digiMAX TV Work? The process that MTCO utilizes begins with the Disneys and the HBO’s of the world beaming their channel content to satellites where it is then beamed back down across the globe to Aggregators. These Aggregators then gather all the different channels available and beam it back up to its satellite as one “package” of channels. The first step MTCO took to build our TV backbone was to install large dish receivers to receive channel content from our Aggregator’s satellites. Additional receivers were also installed to bring in local content and several other channels directly to us.
Once MTCO receives the content, it is sent through our TV Headend to tune into all the channels from the dish’s. From here it runs through the encryption server and another group of servers which manage all of the Set Top Boxes, channel packages, security and features that customers use. The content is then handed off to our own IPTV (a packet-switched communication protocol) network to eventually deliver 100% digital content to each set top box at a customer’s home over.
VDSL technology, which provides for faster data transmission, is used to deliver bandwidth over buried copper to transport service to customers’ homes. MTCO spent much of 2010 preparing for this new service delivery by expanding its fiber-optic footprint to within one-mile of over 90% of all residents in the areas of Marseilles, Germantown Hills and Metamora. Further service area expansion is planned for 2011.
QR Codes. What are They?A QR Code is a two-dimensional bar code displayed in a square box. It was created by a Japanese corporation in 1994. QR stands for Quick Response. The creator wanted the code to allow its message to be decoded at high speed.
So what’s the point of it and what does it do? Well, to put it simply - you can encode a message of varying kind into a QT Block (Is that a word? It is now!) The block can then be scanned and the message decoded. The thing that really tweaked my interest is that until recently it would have required some kind of scanning
gadget to read the code. Today we can use pretty much any smart phone that has a camera and an available QR Code reader
application in the phone. The QR Code shown here is a URL or web address. Actually, it’s the URL to MTCO Communications IPTV website.
There are a few different standard QR Code types. They can automatically take you to a website. Phone numbers can be auto-dialed, along with contacts being added.
Look out for them - You’ll notice that various companies and TV channels, games, etc. are starting to use these clever little codes. Especially now that they realize the general public can actually decode them easily.

ShelterboxJan Cross, a 7th grader at Marseilles Elementary School wanted to do something to help the people of Japan. After talking with some teachers, they decided on working with the Shelterbox organization. In 1999, UK Rotarian and former Royal Navy Search and Rescue diver Tom Henderson spotted a gap in aid provision after natural disasters. While food and medicine were immediately delivered, little or no assistance was given in terms of proper shelter to help survivors through the first few days, weeks and months as they struggled to rebuild their lives. Shelterbox was launched to fill that void. It is the only international aid organization that provides shelter and life-saving equiupment for survival in an easily transportable box.
Brian Adams from the Sycamore Rotary Club brought a shelterbox to the school to explain the concept to the students. Money was collected in classrooms and online (www.mes150.org) and the goal of providing one shelterbox at the cost of $1000.00 was surpassed. Each box provides shelter for ten people.
Marseilles Elementary collected $1422.00 for Shelterbox. Thanks to Cara for lighting the fire to help others and for the amazing generosity of so many others. The online donation portal is still available if anyone is interested in the cause.
Teaching With the Right NotesAnn Terry has taught music for 25 years at Marseilles Elementary School and her many years of diligent work was rewarded in early May when she was named LaSalle County Educator of the Year. She received the award during the annual Excellence in Education Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Regional Office of Education. Terry will receive $1000.00 to use in her classroom.
Letter from the MayorIt is an honor to be asked to write an article in the first MTCO Connected Magazine for Marseilles. On May 4th I was sworn in as the 22nd Mayor of Marseilles and I am looking forward to working with the residents, businesses and organizations of Marseilles and surrounding areas.
I grew up in Marseilles and have so many great memories...we all do! I remember as a child when I got to call my Grandma Schank on the telephone for the first time. We had one phone in our home and the number was Red 77. There were three other homes in our area that had the same number but a different color. The operator asked, “Number Please” and you would say, “Blue 134.” That number was probably busy because everyone had party lines and there were three other homes using the same line. When my brother and I grew older and used the phone to talk to friends, there was always a battle over who was going to get to use the phone and for how long. Somehow it all worked and we got to communicate, and listen in on all the other phone conversations!
Fast forward to the 60’s when I was 16! The family that owned the phone company announced that Marseilles would have a dial system that would include a private line for all their customers. Everyone knew the Hunter Family owned the company and they always supported events and projects througout the community and in our schools. I remember the night that the dial system went into effect. All of my friends had a party just to use the dial system to call someone special...it was something!
Over the years, the phone company has continued to make a major impact on Marseilles and the people that live and work here. When it was sold in 1987, the name changed and so did the communication opportunities, but not the concern for the residents. MTCO Communications has introduced this city to technological opportunities which we had never imagined. The service, their employees and the concern for the future and well being of this community is appreciated. This magazine is just another way that we can communicate with each of you. I look forward to this opportunity and am anxious to serve this community as the Mayor of Marseilles, working together to make this area your best choice!
