Introducing the “COOLBIZ TECH” Scheme.

“Power Saving Actions” are activities undertaken by individuals in anticipation of a substantial

summer power shortage. New ideas have been devised in the fields of food, clothing and shelter

to save power and spend summer comfortably.

The “COOLBIZ TECH” Scheme focuses on high-function textiles, especially in the fields of

“clothing” and “shelter”, and proposes power saving through the use of such textiles.

Support will be provided through the use of the fiber technology possessed by Japan as

one measure of the “Power Saving Actions.”

“COOLBIZ TECH” High-function

Did You Know? Cutting-Edge “High-function Fibers” of Japan

— Let the Techniques of Japan Support You Through Power Shortage in Summer —

Faced by a heat wave caused by global warming and

power saving trends triggered by power shortages

following an accident at a nuclear power plant, functional

textiles that allow comfort in summer are attracting

attention. Various functional textiles are already displayed

in stores featuring “sweat absorbing and quick-drying”

functions and a “cool contact sensation”, including shirts,

underwear, bedding, curtains and carpets.

1Sweat-absorbing,

Quick-drying material

2Cool Contact

SensationMaterial

A material that effectively absorbs sweat,

allowing the skin to feel comfortable by preventing

stickiness and providing a dry and smooth feel.

Another delightful feature is quick-drying after washing.

A cool contact sensation material that quickly absorbs

heat is recommended for overheated bodies.

With a cool feel, it allows a feeling of pleasant comfort to be

maintained, even in sultry summer.

Exploiting the capillary phenomenon, the sweat-absorbing material wicks away sweat. Increasing the surface area of

the fibers facilitates this process using the capillary phenomenon. The surface area of fibers is increased by: (1) Making fibers extremely thin so that multiple fibers can be combined, (2) Changing the fiber shape to facilitate the suction of liquid, or using other methods. The large surface area of the fibers allows the suctioned sweat to be easily diffused and evaporated, meaning both sweat-absorbing and quick-drying performances can be provided simultaneously.

How it Works? The material is pleasantly cool to the touch. Chemical

fibers such as rayon and cupro and natural fibers such as hemp are originally known as materials that are cool to the touch. The material contains a high level of moisture in its fibers, easily conducts heat and feels slightly hard (soft and fresh) when touched among other things. These features affect the cool contact sensation. Recently, various cool contact sensation materials have been commercialized, including one that imparts hydrophilic properties to the surfaces of polyester fibers and special chemical fibers that easily conduct heat.

Textile Products of Japan

The textile industry of Japan swiftly took on the development of

high-function fibers as a global pioneer and commercialized them on a

full scale from the start of the 1980s. The pace of development of

high-function fibers with comfort in mind increased dramatically following

the Cool Biz campaign, which was advocated in 2005. Underwear that

generates heat for wearing in winter is already well known. However,

functional fiber products are now marketed featuring “sweat absorbing

and quick-drying,” “cool contact sensation,” “aeration adjustment,” “heat

shielding and heat insulation” and other features.

Manufacturing products that use such materials require excellent

processing technologies e.g. in weaving, knitting and dyeing that are

cultivated in production sites in Japan as indispensable techniques.

High-function textiles are reborn by combining high-tech material

technology and the skills of the craftsmen who process them. When

reevaluating the ideals of lifestyle and consumption as is done now,

Japanese textile manufacturers strongly support people’s lifestyles, in

their efforts to tackle power saving and energy saving, utilizing high-tech

material technology and the skills of craftsmen.

3Aeration Adjusting

4Heat Shielding and

Heat Insulation Material

Air permeability is a major factor to prevent stuffiness and

involves controlling the entry and exit of air inside clothing to

adjust temperature and humidity.

Curtain materials that are cool in summer.

Sunlight is reflected and shielded to retard

the conduction of outdoor heat and

thus increase cooling efficiency.

Using yarns that incorporate special particles featuring heat shielding properties in each of the fibers and special

ramé yarns (those vaporized with metal) that reflect and shield sunlight, the transmission of sunlight is controlled and fabrics with high heat shielding performance can be produced at the same time. When these materials are used for curtain, they transmit less outdoor heat indoors to enhance the cooling effect compared with ordinary materials.

How it Works?

There are special chemical fibers that repeat elongation when they absorb moisture and revert to their original

state when they are dry. Temperature and humidity inside clothing are automatically adjusted and comfort is maintained by skillfully utilizing these fibers, e.g. opening stitches as fibers elongate (to facilitate aeration) when humidity inside clothing rises due to perspiration and by reverting to the original state (where aeration is controlled) as stitches close up again when fibers dry out.

A sporty and high-function business shirt featuring high performance, particularly in crease resistance. The shirt uses “Cubic Sensor,” a sweat-absorbing and quick-drying material acclaimed in sport where high functionality is required.

Its stitches open and its air permeability enhances when humidity is sensed. Its stitches revert back to the original state when it dries. Polo shirts made of this material are sold by I.T.’S International Co., Ltd.

High aeration performance is achieved using a material with aeration performance of 80cc or more per cm2 per second and an original mesh fabric as liners for the waist area that sweats more and for pockets.

Temperature r ise inside clothing are controlled through the reactive anchoring of special dyestuffs via a special technique in the material dyeing process to refl ect the infrared (heat) rays of the sun that cause heat during summer.

A woven fabric made of 100% polyester, which is processed for sweat absorption and quick-drying. Wefts are stretch processed. It excels in crease resistance and offers easy aftercare of the material.

The skin feels cooler in contact with the material by enhancing the cool contact sensa t ion th rough spec ia l sp inn ing technology.

Border cut and sewn garments featuring high humidity absorption and release, combining high-performance and refreshing comfort. A cool and refreshing feeling between skin and fabric.

Comfortable and convenient cotton-based fabric with high morphological stability. Its excellent wrinkle resistance keeps the fabric smooth during wear and washing, with hardly any ironing needed.

This garment uses special spun yarn “Manard®” made by Toyobo, a uniform blend of cotton and polyester. The product is processed by Toyobo Miracle Care® for crease resistance and its body and neck retain their shape.

Water absorption and quick-drying are ensured using a mesh fabric woven by kneading silver into the rear of the yoke fabric facing the back and a front material with excellent air permeability

Values listed above as effects of electricity saving are a guide for reduction rates and power consumption reduced based on average daily power consumption of an occupied household (14 hours, about 1200W) as estimated by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy. Fractions below the decimal point in the reduction rates are ignored.

Use the OFF functions for toilet seat warming and for warm water supply and power saving function by a timer in case these functions are provided.

Always remember to set the room temperature to 28°C.* When the set temperature is raised 2°C.

* When the standard mode is switched to energy-saving mode and monitor operating hours are reduced to two thirds.
