Many of us struggle to switch our minds off, and seeing as we believe we must do this in order to mediate, or relax, we find ourselves imposing a state of unnatural focus. In contrast, when we practice yoga nidra we relax and switch off automatically. There is no effort… You lie down, creating a passive state of mind, and are then guided to ‘feel’ sensations in the body. This process naturally inhibits the mind’s tendency to produce new thought (it is impossible to think and feel at the same time!). Then, something astonishing and wonderful occurs: before you know it, you have completely let go . Whenever Einstein was faced with a particularly taxing problem, he would allow himself to drift towards sleep and then catch himself before he fully dropped off. It was in this ‘in-between’ state that he found he was able to gain pertinent insights – without ‘hard thinking,’ ideas and answers would simply just come to him. As we practise yoga nidra, we are led into a state of extremely deep relaxation, moving from cognitive thinking into somewhere between being asleep and awake, and therefore, just like Einstein, we find ourselves in a state of incredible clarity and insight. About iRest iRest is a unique yoga nidra practice in that it is substantiated by extensive and continuing research, which has proven its efficacy. Consequently the protocol has been applied in settings not typically open to standard yoga practices (such as the US military). You can find out more at www.irest.us. This day will introduce the core concepts of iRest (it is especially valuable for anyone considering our 5- day Level 1 iRest Yoga Nidra trainings – see the Training section of our website) including the approach to Sankalpa (intention and goal setting), working with thoughts and emotions, and how the non-dual teachings of Adviata and Kashmir Shaivisum are incorporated into the teaching and practice. We are limited to just 6 participants so the day promises to be intimate and engaging. The teacher(s) James Reeves, Dip SM, Dip Yoga Siromani, Dip Structural Yoga Therapy, iRest Senior Trainer has been practising yoga for 15 years and teaching for over a decade. He runs regular classes in Oxford, UK, and teaches workshops, retreats and private clients globally. He is Europe’s only certified iRest Yoga Nidra teacher trainer.
