March 2014

International Women’s Day 2014 is a day to celebrate the hard work of women activists and women’s

committees whose work advances women’s equality within the union and across the globe.

Dear Sisters and Brothers

Women of all races, ages, sexual orientation and abilities are among those people who gain from union

membership.

But women’s equality is under attack: from government efforts to weaken unions through bills like C-

377 and C-525. The drive to lower wages and programs like the Temporary Foreign Workers program

continue to lower the standard of living for women and their families. We must continue the fight with

an even greater energy.

I want to salute the work of our District 6 women’s committee. These sisters work tirelessly along with

allies to champion issues important to woman across the labour movement and throughout our global

society. The committee has a very ambitious agenda for 2014 with a focus on childcare and domestic

violence in addition to supporting the work of local union women’s committees. If you are not already a

committee member, locate one near you and dedicate yourself to renewed action inside that

committee. Please ensure you sign up for WIN (Women’s Information Network) and the TUBE from our

District 6 website so you are always “in the loop” with the great work being done by sisters and brothers

in our union and beyond.

Several of our committee’s offer IWD breakfast and I urge you to gather your family and go to breakfast
