Interview Tips & Tricks

1. You don’t get a second chance to make a good first impression.

How to Make a Good Impression

a. Dress for Success • Dress professionally. Women should wear a dress, or a skirt or dress pants and

a blouse. Men should wear a dress shirt and tie or a suit. • Dress conservatively

1. Keep your hair conservative and natural. 2. Don’t overdue your makeup. Stick to a natural look. 3. Remember to keep jewelry at a minimum

b. Be on Time • Better yet, get to the interview 10 minutes early, but no earlier than 15 minutes.

 

2. Research the Company

a. Understand the company, its products, mission and values. If you wouldn’t work for the company based upon the research, find another position.

b. Understanding the company will prepare you for your interview and give you the confidence you need for the interview.

3. Interview

a. You will be nervous. It’s OK! The more you know about the company and the role the more confident you will feel. Be sure to avoid saying, “um” or “like,” and remember to take a deep breath and smile.

b. Do not chew gum! c. Prepare!

• Bring extra copies of your resume with you. • Be able to answer questions how your experience and skills would apply to the

position. • If you are looking for your first job, you have skills that will apply.

Ex: Babysitting shows responsibility, the ability to keep the kids active, the practice of controlling the situation, problem solving skills when siblings are fighting and the ability to work well under pressure.

d. You may have several interviews before being offered a position. Telephone screen, in person interview, second interview, final interview.

 

e. Prepare questions

• Ask about what success looks like in the role. • Ask about the work culture and what is most enjoyable about working at the company. • Reinforce your skills when you ask a question, and don’t be afraid to ask about the

next step in the process.

f. Be yourself • Again, it is OK to be nervous. • Be friendly • Maintain eye contact but don’t stare the person down.

g. Energy • Employers always look for positive energy, so be enthusiastic.

h. If you want the job, say so. • Ask the interviewer if they have any questions or concerns with your ability to do the

job. • If the interviewer identifies concerns, calm them by addressing them with your skills

and abilities. i. Follow up. Ask when would be a good time to follow up on a decision and do it. j. Send a thank you note

• Ask for the business card of all the employees you interview with. • Send a nice note either by email or hand written in the mail. • You will stand out!

You may win some opportunities and you may not. Keep practicing and if at first you don’t succeed, try again!
