PAU L B E C K E RSorah Yang is a dance teacher and choreographerbased out of L.A., and is most recognized for her powerful, clean, and explosive dance style. Her dance journey began 13 years ago and since then she has trained under the world’s top choreogra-phers in hip hop, urban choreography, contempo-rary, and a variety of street styles. She was nominated “Female Choreographer of the Year” at the World of Dance Awards twice (2015, 2017) among some of the industry’s most accomplished choreographers.

Sorah choreographs for one for the most prestigious urban dance companies, GRV, which she has been a part of for 7 years. She has also choreographed and creative directed music videos for international musi-cal artists, and has appeared in national commercials, internet series, and TV shows as both dancer and cho-reographer. However, despite dipping her toes into the commercial industry, her main passion is teaching, mentoring, and training dancers to increase their body awareness and technical ability in urban dance styles.

Her unique style of movement has brought her to over 22 countries worldwide and 30 colleges around the US to teach workshops and classes.

When she’s not traveling for work, you can find her teaching at Movement Lifestyle in North Hollywood, managing her dance clothing brand, or running seminars and mentorship programs designed to help col-lege students balance their academics with their artistic passions.

So You Think You Can Dance Canada veteran Paul Becker is a trusted friend and the go-to collaborator for many of Hollywood’s biggest productions. This Canadian import has worked closely with everyone from Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers, The Muppets, Michael Buble, Ciara and even directed and created for Kanye West. In the musical world he has staged numbers for

Broadway legends like Ben Vereen, Kristin Chenoweth and Neil Patrick Harris.

Despite the hype, Becker is content to let his body of work speak for itself. And what an impres-sive body of work it is. From choreographing over 200 film and tv projects, like “Twilight”, & “Mirror Mirror” and Zack Snyder’s “Suck-er Punch” to “Diary of a Wimpy Kid 1-3”, & is currently the series choreographer for “A Series of Unfortunate Events”(Netflix), “Once Upon” a Time”(ABC), CW’s hit show “Riverdale”, and is creating every finger spell through finger tuts in SciFi’s

hit show “The Magicians”. He is currently filming Deadpool 2(Fox) and the remake of

Overboard for MGM.

Becker recently was nominated for the World Choreography Award for his work with his mentor,

famed director Kenny Ortega, as his choreography partner for Disney Channel’s mega hit musical Descendants star-ring Dove Cameron. Disney broke records with Descen-dants thanks to the musical numbers.

If that isn’t enough… Paul is creating 2 brand new C Circus’ for the Ringling Brothers and has was the creative director of the PanAm Games in Toronto

and to top it off… Paul just wrote, directed, and choreographed a tap

dance drama feature film “Break-ing Brooklyn” starring Acade-

Hosted by Artists Emerge Street Dance Competition & the Canadian Hip Hop Dance Championships. The CHHC find the very best crews across Canada to represent our country on an international level at the most prestigious Hip Hop event known as

“Worlds” or The World Hip Hop Championships.This year The CHHC will be holding 3 regional events in Edmonton, Halifax and in Montreal before the Canadian National Finals in Ottawa on June 2-3, 2018!

THE SOLO/DUO/TRIO BATTLE ROYALEOur Preliminary Competition was held Online this Year

After being at capacity for our solo/duet/trio category for years and having to turn away entries, we decided it was time to try running our preliminary competition online and open

AE up to everyone! The response has been extraordinary! The Semi-finals round online saw more than 11,000 votes and was viewed more than 85,000 times! Finalists will hit the stage

during our Main Event on Saturday night for top honors.

THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE TROPHY For outstanding entertainment. Goes to the performer or group with the loudest crowd response during the Main Event.

CHOREOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR TROPHY Judges combined choice* from within the top 5 Groups with the highest choreography score from the day competition. Judges consider: flow & continuity, musicality, build in chore-ography, clear technique, use of unique material, exceptional highlights of talent, effective incorporation of multiple street dance styles, use of patterns/levels/formation/variety, use of unique/effective transitions & spacing. Excludes solos, duets & trios.

* Judges Choice is defined as a judge’s individual view on the criteria above, based on personal preference & experience.

What has been your most chal-lenging piece of choreography to date? Do you have a favou-rite?That’s a tough one to answer. In terms of execution, the latest TwoFourSeven set was the most challenging piece I’ve ever worked on. It was the first ever “interac-tive” set where the audience got to choose which version of our set they saw. There were 3 mo-ments in the storyline where we paused and got the front row to vote on what to do, so in the end we had EIGHT versions of our set ready to perform based off how the audience voted. Hav-ing to adjust full sections live on stage was nerve wracking, but we pulled it off! As for my favourite,

I’d have to say my “Fallin” piece has been my favourite piece for several reasons. First, I made sure to get together with each dancer that I cast so that I could pick their brains to see how they interpreted the song. Getting to hear their stories inspired me to create in a way outside of my normal process. But it was being on stage and feeling that electric-ity not just between all of us, but with the entire audience. THAT was the feeling that will stick with me forever. I’ve never felt that in tune on stage before. It was as if the world had shut down for just those 4 minutes and the only thing that existed was our story.

If you could go back in time, what advice and lessons learned would you had given your “younger self ”? There’s something that my dad had told me once that I wish I had heard earlier in my life. At the time I was going through a rough patch and I was trying to find a way to not hurt anymore. But then he sat me down and

said “If you’re go-ing to laugh in life, laugh gloriously! Likewise, if you’re going to cry, cry gloriously!” He was tell-ing me to

embrace every emotion I could feel in my short life.

And for anything that may seem like rock bottom, just remember, this too shall pass. And it did. And I’m glad I cried gloriously too, because it made for some amazing pieces ;)

What advice would you give to aspiring younger dancers/choreographers, based on your experience in the dance indus-try? Remember the first time you were inspired to dance/create and never let that go. Remember that performance that changed your life, that one dancer that made you want to stand up and join in, that one piece that made you feel something you’ve never felt before. Because that is the mo-ment that will save you from ever losing sight of why you fell in love with dance in the first place. And that’s when I remember that if that one dancer didn’t have that one amazing performance on that given day, perhaps I wouldn’t have pursued dance as a career and be able to live the life that I have today.

Carlo was born and raised in Edmonton, Ab where he took his first dance class at the late age of 19. He quickly pushed his career forward by moving to Vancouver in 2010 where he founded “The Faculty” who won 8 consecutive titles at AE and WOD Vancouver & Seattle. Carlo won his 3rd Choreographer of the Year award in 2017 for his reoutine Deez Knee Deez Queen [pictured on pg. 25].

So if I’m going to walk out that door and say that I’m a dancer/choreog-rapher, I have to bring my best self forward because it’s now my responsi-bility to be that moment for someone else.

What is something that keeps you strong when things get difficult?Money. Just kidding. Sort of lol. But in all honesty, as cliche as it sounds, my family. I don’t see them very often since I moved but they are the only people on this planet that can recharge me when I’m unable to hold myself up anymore. My dad, especially, has been such a big part of my backbone. There’s just something about his pres-ence that keeps me calm even during the worst of times. But then again, money does that too. So it’s a tough choice.

What are some little known facts about yourself you would want oth-ers to know about?1. I have a degree in Film and Media and that’s a big reason why I get so much inspiration for my pieces from movies. 2. I have Trypophobia which is a pho-bia of irregular patterns or clusters of small holes or bumps.3. My favourite show is Rupaul’s Drag Race4. I was born on December 23rd which was two weeks before my due date. I was so small that the hospital was able to put me in a Christmas

stocking when I was given to my mom. 5. I was on a show on MTV called ‘Becoming’ where winners were able to recreate iconic music videos. My best friend had won the Avril Lavigne episode but I was asked to be a part of the episode as well because I had filmed and created her audition video. Don’t try to search up the episode ;) It won’t come up (It was back when I was in High School so, in 1842).

What are your hobbies and does this help you with your dancing?My hobbies include sitting in the cor-ner of my living room and crying to “This is Us”, so no.

What are your long-term career goals in dance or otherwise?I think having a long term career in dance is already a goal. As someone who has pursued something they loved as a career, I’m trying to find a source of longevity. I know my body won’t be on my side forever, but that’s why I’m grateful that most of my passion lies in creating and directing. Pro-ducing my own fully conceptualized show is on my to-do list and I plan on checking that off very soon ;)

What is the biggest challenge you have come across in your career so far?Like I mentioned in the previous ques-tion, longevity. To stay relevant as an artist you have to find ways to both re-invent yourself but at the same time maintain what it means to be uniquely you. This has definitely been the big-gest challenge of my career because it

isn’t something that can be solved in a given amount of time. It is ongoing and that’s what makes this career path so deliciously challenging.

What is your best asset?

What do you turn to for new inspiration?Movies and music videos. I’m always inspired by fellow story tellers. For example, “The Collapse” where I cre-ated a split-stage narrative was inspired by a “reality vs. expectations” scene in the movie 500 Days of Summer. The concept I used in my video for “Paper Hearts” was adapted from a music video called “Just” by Radiohead. I have also seen a number of music videos that play with the idea of the “rewind” but none that made sense both ways. So in my latest video en-titled “Palindrome” I created a set of choreography that played off the lyrics for 30 seconds, then goes in reverse but still makes sense with the last 30 seconds of lyrics.

Name two habits that have helped you in your career

My ability to read minds and my ability to tell white lies that work in my favour.
