A 3D SOLID VOLUMETRIC
MODEL OF POLYHALITE
RESOURCE BOULBY MINE
PREPARED BY ANDREW MOYLE
4TH YEAR GEOLOGY STUDENT – ABERDEEN UNIVERSITY

PROJECT INTRODUCTION
Requirement:
Collation of all data relating the
development and exploration of the poly
halite resource at ICL
Defined Task:
Production of a 3D Solid volumetric model
of the polyhalite utilizing the latest
horizontal and vertical drill data to define
lithologies
TASK
The 3D Model
• Insertion of grade information
• Forward planning of production
• Development of mining strategy
Modelling
• -Combination of MS Access databases
& “Datamine Studio” RM/EM
• -use of borehole info to generate lithological
sections
• -link these into a seamless volume
Lithologies to be modelled:
• Fordon Anhydrite
• P3 (main bed) Polyhalite
• P2 (banded) Polyhalite
• P1 Polyhalite
• Z2 Anhydrite (the cap of the polyhalite sequence)
BUILDING THE 3D MODEL
Work flow:
Import data logged,
geo-referenced and
drawn in Autocad
Change data to
required properties
(Units in this case)
Draw sections of
surface along the line
of each borehole
Link drawn sections
together with
wireframes
Check and validate
wireframe as
lithologically accurate
Repeat for next
lithology
Input a back pin
(identified from drill point
and logging elevation)
